Oh, someone else that isn't on holiday

DamonBradleylovesPippi · 29/07/2009 14:31

Well I am on a kind of holiday tbh as my mum is here [grin!

Sputnik · 29/07/2009 14:43

I hope you are taking advantage!

DamonBradleylovesPippi · 29/07/2009 17:22

As much as I can.

francagoestohollywood · 29/07/2009 18:26

Hi there, we have the internet , as fil has brought his laptop and chiavetta!
Pippi, how's it going?

Sputnik and Rosa, I think lots of children can be -at any stage- be overwhelmed by the sea. Mine included, until more or less last year! They do need their time to adjust, and the sea it is so unpredictable... small children don't like it.

The journey went quite well. It is hot, but no scirocco, the granite are delicious.

McCloudsextoy · 29/07/2009 20:54

hello guys! no holiday for me either! And the weather is super crappola.

Where are you franca?

It is so chilly here this evening that i would not mind a bit of scirocco!

Penthesileia · 29/07/2009 21:00

Hello everyone!!

We're not on holiday either - and unlikely to get one... Moving house. Also, we've had a leak in the house, so have to sort it out. £££££ This bloody rainy weather!

No nanny yet, although we saw someone on Monday who was nice. Actually, can I discuss this with you guys, without me BU? She was very nice, competent, qualified, etc... DD seemed to take a shine to her (lots of smiles, handing her her toys, etc.) But she's very overweight. Couldn't fit properly into our garden chairs when we sat outside to chat. DH (and I, if I'm honest) is a little worried about this, both insofar as we wonder how she'll manage chasing after DD (though she has worked in a nursery, so obviously can cope!), and in the more general "role model" side of things. On the whole, I'm happier to overlook it, but DH is a bit anxious about it. Are we BU?

Penthesileia · 29/07/2009 21:00

How did DD's party go, btw, Pippi? Hope you had a good time.

Sputnik · 29/07/2009 21:13

I can see where you're coming from Penthe, but your DD liking her would count a lot in her favour IMO. Also I don't think small children really notice physical differences like we do, so I wouldn't really be too worried about the role model side of things (unless she was scoffing junk food or something in front of your DD, which I suppose you wouldn't necessarily see).

Penthesileia · 29/07/2009 21:22

Yeah, I think that it is way way more important that DD likes her and is happy. I know I am BU!

I doubt she'd eat junk food "at work" so to speak. Obviously, we'd leave food in the house for DD and her anyway, so it wouldn't be a case of her feeding DD too much junk.

We've got one more interview to do on Friday, so we'll decide over the weekend.

Sputnik · 29/07/2009 21:40

Definitely not one for general release on MN

Penthesileia · 29/07/2009 21:52

Indeed! Can you imagine?

Honestly, I'm not usually such an evil bigot...

DamonBradleylovesPippi · 30/07/2009 11:23

Please do start a AIBU thread. I want to see you lynched !!!!

The first childminer I saw ever for DD was the same. I must admit we had exactly the same concerns: not so much about the role model (although when she described the healthy food thing I must have entered my head and I'm pretty sure DH must have craked a joke at that too) but the bit about chasing her etc.
They are silly concerns though as for example no one ever has been in need of 'chasing after' dd1 as she never runs away. Also a good minder should not need chasing after as she should be able to 'control' the children with the tone of her voice (god don;t I sound a bit regimental ).

We did not chose her in the end for other reasons (very small flat, teenage son, better childminder).

Party was great. Weather was very good and children well behaved. I wish I could have parties all the time. I love all the excitment and preparations etc.

Sputnik · 30/07/2009 11:36

Running after depends on the child. My DD never needed to be run after but DS does, when we are out anywhere he invariably heads for the exit at top speed without a backward glance, voice or no voice.

I suppose actually anyone might end up eating junk in front of your kid, they don't need to be overweight. I was in that frame of mind having just looked at this

McCloudsextoy · 30/07/2009 17:09

i would not worry penthe, as long as she and dd took a shine to each other, fat or anorexic it should not matter. And a bit of runnig after dd might do her good too. From the role model point of view I don't see that it matters, surely you are not going to find the well adjusted smart witty well read loving who speaks a few foreign languages blah blah nanny we all secretly would want. As long as she is loving.....Did you like her?

Penthesileia · 30/07/2009 21:55

LOL Pippi! It would be a kamikaze thread! Glad the party went well.

My DD sounds like your DS, Sputnik. Even in a huge field, she'll still head for the fence, looking for the gate, and start shaking it, desperate to escape! That website is totally rough! Blurrrrggghhh!

Yes, McCloud, I did like her. She seemed kind, had lots of experience (5 years in a nursery, 1 year nannying), and, as I said, DD seemed keen on her. Interestingly, she was a total nightmare around another woman we interviewed (whom DH and I instantly hated too), so I guess one should go with gut instinct and first impressions. Loving the sound of your perfect nanny, though: where can I find her?

Sputnik · 30/07/2009 22:51

I would totally go on gut instinct. When we were looking at nurseries for DD there was only 1 locally and it was really depressing. Then by huge good luck a new one opened and both DH and I took to the woman that runs it immediately, she is absolutely brilliant with children, has the patience of a saint (indeed her name is actually Santi), 4 years later DS is going there and I am still really happy with our choice.

gio71 · 31/07/2009 08:19

penthe go with your gut definitely. our childminder is a larger lady but is fab with ds, he loves her and took to her from the start. We had same concerns but he never seems to play up with her or try and escape, he saves that all for me
Had root canal work this week, final one yesterday -. Very bruised feeling face today.
Hurrah, the sun is shining for a bloody change so we are having a day out today. Final days of cool before back to baking Rome which dp assures me is "come Africa" at the moment-is that right Sput?

DamonBradleylovesPippi · 31/07/2009 10:41

I miss the 'come Africa' or 'vento dell'Africa' comments!

Gut instinct anytime!

Sputnik · 31/07/2009 12:35

Yes, like Africa but without the mangoes.
It is supposed to cool down a bit over the weekend.

Me and DS got woken up at 5.30 this morning by the sodding cicadas, I had to close the window they were so loud.

McCloudsextoy · 31/07/2009 12:44

"come africa"

McCloudsextoy · 31/07/2009 15:34

might post here about this: does anyone use a water filter jug, i ask becasue we have one but we never use, and if we do use we end up keeping the same filter for so long i doubt it makes a difference, are we supposed to use it for health reasons?

DamonBradleylovesPippi · 31/07/2009 17:52

don't use as I know I'd do exactly the same as you. we either buy the mineral one or drink tap.

Rosa · 31/07/2009 21:17

No sun here Gio .... had traumatic night day as father was admitted to hosp for a ticker problem - he seems to be getting is sorted and will be home hopefully tom .I have been up since 3.30 am so normal day really !!!!
Sput heard about the heat and I feel for you . McCloud we have a filter iN Venice and forget to change the thing regularly but I do buy bottled water for the baby as after I read a few things about the Venice water not being so good as was published something about the old pipes !

McCloudsextoy · 31/07/2009 21:30

rosa, dont know what a ticker is, his knee? they are sending him home pretty quickly so he must be better......luckily you were there for your mum..you must be knackered, you need tlc.

i am off to bed as i feel fat and unappreciated around here...
