Ciao, welcome!

Ugh liver! I was apparently weaned on the stuff and at a ridiculously young age like 3 mths. It probably greatly influenced my becomig vegetarian in later life. Why would you inflict offal on a small defenceless child? Is it ever commestible?

Brangelina · 12/05/2009 16:11

Rosa, I also take better pics than my DP by just pointing the camera and clicking furiously. DP ruined all the xmas photos by trying to be artistic, I've had to colour corrrect most in photoshop just so DD is vaguely visible, most are beyond help though.

No more mercatini for us, DP has lost the energy and I never had any. Apparently he used to get up at 4am to nab the collectible stuff. Not for me.....

francagoestohollywood · 12/05/2009 16:17

Sorry, I didn't mean to be blunt, but the controversy against nurseries was one of the topics that grated me the most when we were living in the UK. Childcare is a political matter, and perhaps if the State was a bit more involved with the control and subsidization their quality would raise. But obviously if it's widely believed that nurseries damage children nothing concrete will ever be done.
Have to go, off to take ds to swimming lessons.

francagoestohollywood · 12/05/2009 16:18

Liver is only very nice alla veneziana, with lots of onions!

Penthesileia · 12/05/2009 16:20

Feel I must point out that I don't think - rationally - that nurseries damage children; and part of me wants to send DD to one, not least because I think it will be more fun for her. But DH is dead-set on the nanny route, and I'm just about anxious enough after "Why Love Matters", etc., not to be able to articulate fully why I don't entirely agree with him. Does that make sense?

Penthesileia · 12/05/2009 16:22

Also, given our hours (I'll be out of the house from 8-6, I think, when I'm back in the office; DH similar), a nanny is the more convenient route, at least in the first instance.

Yes, nurseries are better regulated here I think. At the very least, the food is better. Having said that, I didn't put my DD in nursery until she was 15mo, prior to that - from 9mo when I went back to work - she had a Sri Lankan lady looking after her as I thought 1-1 was best at that age. After that I felt she needed more stimulation, esp on tha language front.

Sputnik · 12/05/2009 16:32

Well I haven-t eaten any meat for 24 years but I still remember how disgusting liver tasted!

Have to agree with Franca re nurseries, actually I think the best is to have a good mix really, and not exclusively one or the other. I certainly think under 3s benefit from some time in a nursery setting (not to mention their parents).

Brangelina · 12/05/2009 16:34

Yes, it definely saved my sanity. I still remember my first day back at work and the utter joy of finally being able to go to the loo by myself. Mingled with pangs because I was missing DD, of course.

Camomilla · 12/05/2009 16:34

I had no probs with the nursery DS went too, which was the only one I really liked (I'm kicking myself for not taking a couple of the girls numbers before they closed as they also offered babysitting and DS was quite attached to them) after visiting all the ones round here. but it had to close down as they couldn't keep up with the rest (they were one of the cheapest). and DS blossomed at nursery , as we don't have anyone nearby, that was really the only "outside" contact he had. DP though has gone all PFB with DD, not that he didn't care/love DS as much, I think it's just a girl thing...

Sputnik · 12/05/2009 16:36

Yes, mine both started around 18 months, I wasn-t comfortable with the idea before that and luckily it wasn-t a necessity for us.

Camomilla · 12/05/2009 16:36

hate liver, apparently when I was little I loved it, as I loved trippe and cheese - don't eat any of these now, well, since I can remember (a part from a few, I even used to take mozzarella off pizza til few years ago, and still can't eat it once it's gone cold)

Sputnik · 12/05/2009 16:42

Outside UK based ladies, I have an important announcement:
Amazon are now delivering loads of stuff outside the UK that they didn-t used to, most importantly, shoes.
Right, see you all in a while.......

Brangelina · 12/05/2009 16:44

Yeah, I saw that. Couldn't find anything I liked though, much to my chagrin. Have you seen the stuff on GLTC? Who TF needs a giftwrap tidy? Or a pea-stopping plastic border for plates? Surely one serves peas in a bowl?

Camomilla · 12/05/2009 16:49

a pea-stopping plastic border for plates!?!?!? WTF!?!?

Sputnik · 12/05/2009 17:20

Harumph, there I was all excited about finding some nice summer sandals but there is naff all. I am tempted by the discount Le Creuset though, but I think I-ll wait til next time they do 50% off.

Brangelina · 12/05/2009 17:20

Here you go!

francagoestohollywood · 12/05/2009 18:34

and at the pea stopping plastic thingy.

Penthe, I hope you haven't misunderstood me and thought I was implicitly criticizing your choice. Far from that... and you know that you can't do no wrong as far as I'm concerned .
No, it's just that I think there should be more debate in the UK (and in Italy) on how to raise the quality and accessibility of childcare. As far as Italy is concerned, the quality of nursery is (or at least used to be) very high, but sadly nurseries are accessible to a minority (usually in northern big cities). Access of good childcare here is the key to the number of women going back to work, etc etc. But you know the stuff, as we met already in various threads !

Rosa · 12/05/2009 20:03

WTF at the pea stopper thing - dd has her peas in a pasta bowl and course she uses her fingers to push them on - thats what fingers are for no???
I had seen on Amazon as I was going to order a bubble cot but am hanging on that one might come up on e bay - the travel cots are heavy and take up too much space . Mind you I haddn't got as far as the shoes ...Rosa trots off dutifully to check them out and any other bargain she can find !

McCloudismynewnameforawhile · 12/05/2009 20:11

sorry, didn't want to criticize anybody's choice and go all daily mail on you, just been given this book by a friend, and want to read different opinions about how to raise a baby.

i think it goes without saying that what we want is choice about what we want to do, when and how.

I think it is important to have research in this field because it is going to impact on our lives and our kids' lives, research that is not politically influenced, anti feminist and so on, i want the best for this society, infact isn't it ridiculous in the 21st century that we don't have proper access to excellent childcare for everyone, i would have loved a nanny to take care of the kids whilst i just had a lie down with a book.

tbh today having a nanny would have saved my day!

Rosa · 12/05/2009 20:13

don't know what SPutnik is on about I found a perfect pair of shoes

McCloudismynewnameforawhile · 12/05/2009 20:14

12 quid for that piece of crap? i would probably use it to strangle the baby when it;s chucking food on the floor time !

infact i want to employ somebody who comes in to scoop up all the crap dd chucks on the floor, i seem to spend my day with a broom.

McCloudismynewnameforawhile · 12/05/2009 20:16

bargain! i think the whole of little italy should get a pair to spice up their life...

francagoestohollywood · 12/05/2009 20:26

at the slippers! Yes, lets all get them so that we can chat wearing them. Actually I can see myself with those slippers, a broom in my right hand and a cigar in the other!

I think a nanny is a great idea if you are out of the house. If you are at home:
a) the children constantly come and look for you
b) the nanny frowns upon you, for being lazy

Penthesileia · 12/05/2009 20:41

I'm more worried that the nanny is going to think we are freaks, with a barn full of books, and a mouldy old 70s decorated house.
