Oh honestly Hippi, they pick their moments, don't they? As if having a smear isn't stressful enough.... Well done BTW!

I bet they have targets to speak to patients who are overweight/smoke/drink/have blue eyes and brown hair I think you're doing really well so far and I thought slow weight loss was desirable as you stand a better chance of keeping it off or something. I suppose though, if they're prepared to offer a bit of support it might help a bit? I don't know anything about gastric bands or reductil though, apart from Fern Britton having it done! I agree about not starving yourself BTW. I had most success losing weight when I ate a very low fat diet but ate huge amounts... I lived on bagels with jam, malt loaf, bread and honey etc etc. I can honestly say I was never hungry, but how long I'd have stuck it if I hadn't had to do it to avoid gallbladder pain I don't know. Exercise is the way to go

On that note, I've just signed up for pilates I'm petrified but the physio recommended it for the whiplash so I feel I have to give it a go. I'm going to be the youngest in the class by quite a long way, so am hoping I won't be the least flexible, but I haven't done any exercise for years apart from dogwalking. eek!

Well done T for parents evening. It sounds like he's making good steady progress. I think a lot of children struggle a bit with the bustle of secondary - it's a big change from the relative security of primary.

I had a very proud mummy day yesterday. B went to her new swimming class and saw her teacher is the one she really didn't want and he doesn't get in the water with them. I expected meltdown but just told her to have a go and see how it was and she had a ball! And she managed 5/6 strokes front crawl without having to put her feet down - Hooray! She was sooooo excited

Parents evening went well too. She's doing really well all round and has been moved onto simple chapter books in reading, which is nice. Number work she's great with, but struggles a bit to apply it in problem solving which I think is probably just being a bit young and lacking in confidence, rather than not understanding it IYKWIM? The teacher hadn't noticed she's the youngest in the class....

Hotcrossbunny · 12/03/2009 13:56

Gosh that turned into an essay - sorry

Agree with MAS!

MargaretMountford · 12/03/2009 14:16

oh hooray for B in swimming and parents evening !!
Pilates sounds very good idea - several people I know do it..
bagel and jam diet sounds nice actually !

hippipotamiHasLostSixPounds · 12/03/2009 15:53

Well done B at swimming

Pilates sounds fun, well done you!

Reductil seems like an okay option - it is basically an appetite surpressant. But I need to research it in terms of side-effects.
A gastric band is not even in the equation. The nurse mentioned it, but I really really really don't think I need it. (am aware that sounds as if I am denial about my weight)
But for now the nurse wants to see me every 2 weeks to weigh me so we will see how that goes.....

Right ladies, advice needed. Sil is getting married at teh end of April. We have bought O a lovely grey (sort of a steel grey, not too dark) suit complete with waistcoat. He has raided dh's old tie collection and picked out a navy blue Wallace and Gromit one and a petrol blue one with lots of disney characters - the tasmanian devil, sylvester and tweetie, duffy duck, bugs bunny etc.
It is a wedding at a country hotel, so not overly churchy or formal. Can he get away with one of those ties? I am tempted to say yyes but don't want to commit some terrible wedding faux pas...

It was book character day at school today as part of bookweek. E looked cute as rapunzel

MargaretMountford · 12/03/2009 15:59

tie will be perfect - he'll look very smart but still a boy..am not keen on children looking like mini men, iyswim !
How lovely - haven't been to a wedding in ages - last one was my BILs second marriage (register office and then to nice hotel on the Wirral - T was about 6 and wore a mini Boden shirt with hibiscus type flowers all over it - looked cute ! - I spent ages agonising over my costume and eventually chose some v nice Hobbs navy linen sailor type trousers, a black cross over ballet type cardi and a dusty pink camisole and my trusty Hobbs gold mules which I wore to my own wedding ! - think dh wore his own wedding suit and nice flowery Boden shirt)

MargaretMountford · 12/03/2009 16:00

Did E have long hair then ? awww

hippipotamiHasLostSixPounds · 12/03/2009 16:13

Which one (tie I mean), sylvester etc or wallace and gromit?

I am wearing a long ochre coloured linen-blend skirt with a fifties inspired brown and cream polka-dot short sleeved blouse and some chocolate brown ballet style pumps.
I don't do hats or fascinators so will just make sure my hair is clean, shiny and newly cut I have bought a lovely ocre pendant necklace and matching bracelet.

E is a bridesmaid so sil and mil took her out dress shopping a few weeks ago. They chose a beautiful cream dress with a little shrug cardigan, sparkly cream shoes and some cream flower hairslides all from debenhams. Really sweet

For rapunzel E already had a pink princess costume which came with a pointy princess style hat.
So I bought a ball of pale yellow wool and made a very long plait which I stitched onto the inside of the hat. Voila - rapunzel

MargaretMountford · 12/03/2009 17:00

Sylvester one !
your costume sounds lovely - blouse especially !
I was imagining E with a long woolly plait

hippipotamiHasLostSixPounds · 12/03/2009 17:45

What you wore to your bil's wedding sounds lovely. Unfortunately MIL is being a bit motherzilla-of-the-bride-ish. I asked could O just wear smart trousers, a funky boden shirt and a waistcoat adn she said 'oh no, he will need a jacket adn tie' adn proceeded to look at me as if I had suggested he go nekkid
So a proper suit it is.
I prefer the sylvester tie too, but O is a huge W&G fan so that is swaying him...

MargaretMountford · 12/03/2009 18:58

ha ! My ILs paid for the wedding flowers at my wedding which was great, but I asked them what flowers they might want for button holes (I was thinking a gerbera ! or cornflowers as I love wild flowers) but MIL said 'oh just carnations' which are dull - so we went with that- I felt obliged- though dh had a nice rose. My mum did all the table arrangements which were very pretty...

MargaretMountford · 12/03/2009 18:59

I guess O should choose his tie - W&G would be equally nice !

hippipotamiHasLostSixPounds · 12/03/2009 20:41

He genuinly can't decide - bless his little cottong socks

MILs are funny arent' they? Mine is trying to co-ordinate her outfit with the groom's mother and was outraged when groom's mother was not going to be wearing a dress but a skirt and shirt.

hippipotamiHasLostSixPounds · 12/03/2009 20:42

cottong? rogue g!

Hotcrossbunny · 12/03/2009 21:39

E's costume sounds gorgeous
and O's outfit for wedding sounds just right. I agree with MAS about the mini-man thing, not right IMO, children need something that says they are children IYSWIM? A character tie sounds perfect - definitely the cartoon one!

Your outfit sounds really lovely. I'm hopeless with clothes - you both seem much more style-aware than me. Will run all clothes choices by you in future

B has come home from school with a tickly cough and she's a bit hot and fed up. Has gone to bed with no tea but lots to drink and is tucked up in our bed with her baby blanket. Bless. Typical timing - Nana is arriving tomorrow and isn't very sympathetic to illness

Hotcrossbunny · 12/03/2009 21:44

Wrote that earlier, hadn't finished but didn't want to delete all I'd written. You've been here in the meantime, so wasn't ignoring MIL angst, just hadn't read it yet! That doesn't make any sense, does it? Am waffling and peering bleary eyed at the screen!

MAS - cornflowers are my all-time favourite flowers I wanted a bouguet of them for my wedding, and the cake decorated with them. Wrong time of year though, so I had a bouguet of blue and yellow flowers and my cake had a few tiny silk cornflowers and was piped in cornflower blue icing. The cake decorator was dubious but I was happy Buttonholes were heather!

MargaretMountford · 12/03/2009 21:59

aww, hope B is ok

MargaretMountford · 12/03/2009 22:02

I think August, when we got married, was wrong time for cornflowers too !! Heather is a lovely idea for buttonholes and love the idea of cornflower blue icing

Hotcrossbunny · 12/03/2009 23:23

Ooh, we got married 15th August!

hippipotamiHasLostSixPounds · 13/03/2009 08:04

Heather adn cornflowers sounds lovely...

I had a fab bouquet of tulips, in all colours, as they are my all-time favourite flower.
We got married on Jersey in May, so the bouquet was put together the morning of the wedding at a local nursery and collected by dh.

How is B feeling this morning? I spent last night workign out how much I eat and making cuts. Have given myself a rough guide to what I should be eating as I think my eating habits are so far removed from normal I have to start at the beginning again...
Feeling a bit down about it all, but if my weightloss speeds up a little and I begin to feel better I will perk up I'm sure

Red nose day today - O and E are in red casual clothes (well, with red, not all red) and O wants his hair sprayed red. E has changed her mind on the red spray and has opted for red hairslides instead (of which we have hundreds because red is one of the colours of her school uniform, in fact she is wearing a red school poloshirt and red school tights with denim pinnafore dress.
And especially for you MAS - O is wearing a red boden top, jeans and red crocs
He also has to bring in money and tell jokes (they have to pay 20p for each joke they tell )

hippipotamiHasLostSixPounds · 13/03/2009 08:06

Oops, a whole paragraph went missing there

How is B feeling this morning? There is a flu bug doing the rounds at school and there have been a few cases of Scarlet Fever so just keep an eye on B. As for unsympathetic gran, no advice. Is she part of the stoic 'my leg is falling off but I will still hike for 4 miles' generation?

hippipotamiHasLostSixPounds · 13/03/2009 08:13

Oh, I am not at all style aware to be honest. I am definately one of the frumpier mums in the playground...

To be honest I struggle to find clothes my size so I just buy whatever vaguely fits.

Oh, and I like crocs so cannot possibly be style aware

Hotcrossbunny · 13/03/2009 10:48

Off to the dr later. B was up most of the night wailing about her sore sore throat, but doesn't appear to hvae a temp which is good and no rash, so hopefully not scarlet fever

I thought you looked lovely when we met. You had a very pretty blouse on, which is the sort of thing I like to wear. I also like Crocs - they're the most comfortable thing to wear on holiday and perfect for camping Oh, and I love tulips too!

Am cleaning for MIL coming at the same time as sitting on the sofa feeding B spoonfuls of lemon and honey - its tricky!

hippipotamiHasLostSixPounds · 13/03/2009 11:20

awww, poor B Good luck at the doctors.

Thanks for your nice comments, I feel frumpy most of the time though....

Have a nice day with MIL and I hope B feels better soon!

This is for B:

Hotcrossbunny · 13/03/2009 15:26

Poor B has tonsilitis - the Dr described it as 'impressive' and she has 10 days of antibiotics ahead. Poor wee thing. She perks up after a dose of calpol, but when that's run out she's crying with the pain She's had an ice lolly and I've made jelly for tea, so hopefully they'll sooth the throat a bit.

Wish MIL wasn't coming. She's not the easiets person to have around and she'll just be cross her visit is going to be home-based. Oh well, can't be helped.

MargaretMountford · 13/03/2009 21:55

poor little B - tonsilitis is miserable ...hope it clears up asap. Hope MIL visit isn't too daunting either - B must come first of course. I love tulips too, but am not a croc fan as you know I thought you looked great when we met hippi - not in the least frumpy,honestly- I'm not just saying it.
Have been to my old primary school today after lunch with my 3 friends on our reunion - it was great..lovely to see them of course and great fun to go back to school - how little it is and how unchanged really..it's a Catholic school and choc full of holy things, more than I remember there being though I suppose it probably was like that when we were there...the faith bit does very much influence the education and we were really into it at the time. Took lots of pictures - I look dreadful in most, which is why I don't usually appear in them ! but 'tis just vanity and foolish of me as it's more important to share in these lovely things than worry that my hair looks awful etc
