Welcome , Ciao ,

Didn't the Americans reintroduce the mafia into Sicily after WW2 to combat communism? Which is probably why they're all Forza Italia or PdL or whatever it's called nowadays.

Brangelina · 18/02/2009 21:38

REally must go now and finish DD's earring. Notte!

francagoestohollywood · 18/02/2009 21:39

Well, you sound sensible. Actually, sensible is not right, wise, maybe?

I agree with you about the Americans responsibility.

Penthesileia · 18/02/2009 21:40

Yes, essentially they did. Better the Mafia, they thought, than Communism.

Notte, Brange.

francagoestohollywood · 18/02/2009 21:41

Il giorno della civetta is depressing, but very good. Gripping. I recommend.

Yes that secret garden!

Penthesileia · 18/02/2009 21:44

Ha, wish I were wise. T'would be nice.

Eek. DD is lying next to me, bf-ing in her sleep, and she's just squeezed my boob and squirted me in my own eye with my own milk.

I love the Secret Garden! I felt like that little girl when I was sent to boarding school - all sad and unloved. I wasn't unloved, of course, and my mother was so unhappy to do it, but it was a connection, IYSWIM?

The fact that the Mafia now (in)directly support Forza Italia, etc., is an illogical quirk of history, though! If you believe that Forza Italia is - in certain respects - fascistic, then the Mafia - historically - should be against it, because Mussolini, of all people, came closest to wiping them out, I believe. Or am I wrong about that?

francagoestohollywood · 18/02/2009 21:48

sorry I meant getting depressed thinking about the mafia, americans, 1970s terrorism, etc

Oh that's cute! Enjoy the cuddles

Yes, I see what you mean. How old were you when you got sent to boarding school? It sounds scary (going to boarding schools)

Penthesileia · 18/02/2009 21:48

Aw - don't be depressed! Are you depressed about the Mafia, or me at boarding school? As Nietzsche said, what doesn't kill you only makes you stronger!

Penthesileia · 18/02/2009 21:49

I was 11. It was scary; I didn't like it.

francagoestohollywood · 18/02/2009 21:51

Despite my degree in history, I'm a bit ignorant about what Mussolini did in Sicily during the ventennio . But since after ww2, Mafia has always "supported" whoever won the elections or had stronger links to the area etc. that's been historically the democrazia cristiana. But I think the mafia would try to infiltrate any political party, tbh.

Penthesileia · 18/02/2009 21:52

Yes, 1970s terrorism. So awful.

When DH and I were in Milan a while back, we were walking to Santa Maria delle Grazie, and we passed one of the buildings where - I think - the security guards (?? is that right?) were killed.

francagoestohollywood · 18/02/2009 21:52

Depressed about mafia. But I can be a bit depressed about you at boarding school if you like. I don't mind Why did you go?

Penthesileia · 18/02/2009 21:54

My dad was in the army, and he was posted to the US. I would've fallen behind in my schooling if I wasn't at school in the UK.

Brangelina · 18/02/2009 21:55

Penthe, they're following the money and lack of morals. I don't think FI is neo fascist, or at least it didn't set out to be. It would be odder if the mafiosi were to join AN or La Fiamma Tricolore, but FI are perceived to be pretty neutral.

Brangelina · 18/02/2009 21:56

Yes, FI is supposedly the natural successor to the DC.

Brangelina · 18/02/2009 21:57

I really wanted to go to boarding school at one point. I must have read too many Malory Towers.

Penthesileia · 18/02/2009 21:59

You're right, Brange & franca. But I think that certain aspects of Berlusconi are fascist.

From a totally navel-gazing, self-absorbed point of view, it's interesting to compare a recent (right-wing) autobiography by Farrell of Mussolini with the current situation with B: it's very apologetic, man-of-the-moment stuff.

francagoestohollywood · 18/02/2009 22:00

Do you mean the homicide of Commissario Calabresi? There have been quite a few terrible episodes in Milan, the first being the bomb in Piazza Fontana that killed 11 people (or more? can't remember, sadly) in 1969.

Oh I see. (american high schools with cheer leaders etc sound possibly more scary than boarding schools!)

My internet connection is playing up, so I might disappear!

francagoestohollywood · 18/02/2009 22:03

Yes, I agree, I think B has many fascist triats

Brangelina · 18/02/2009 22:03

You are right, plus I'm convinced that Berlusca has dictatorial aspirations. He is also the right size, bald, puffs out his chest and has gnome ears.... However, when FI was originally launched it was to fill the centre-right gap left by the DC. It has evolved into something more "fascist" from its associtions and alliances.

Penthesileia · 18/02/2009 22:03

My school was not-at-all MT, tragically.

francagoestohollywood · 18/02/2009 22:03

traits, even

Brangelina · 18/02/2009 22:04

Thought not. I went to see one (before my mum found the nice catholic school that would reform me) and it was pretty grim.
