can't wait! [super gossipy emoticon]

quite disgusted too by ed thread! there is a weird part of society that i do not know in rl but is on mumsnet. And makes me feel very protective of the kids, not only mine to be honest, the ones i see in dc's school (mother theresa emoticon). boh, maybe i am heading for a breakdown, as i feel very sensitive to things about dcs, the way they are brought up, the class system, money and its lack, privilege and lack of it.

and what are you damon having meets with male friends?????? very envious...

hi sunflower: i think damon is right about the selective hearing...still unsure though about moving dd, for the first time since she was a newborn she asked for milk at 3am, fgs. and she guzzled a bottle. porca miseria. we ignored her for ages but then we gave in because i am weak at those times. to be honest she certainly didn't get a cuddle, i sort of chucked her in the cot and crawled under the blanket.

beforesunrise · 28/02/2009 08:13

who where thinks Islington is rough and scary???!!!!

ed thread- i thought on the whole i got my answer, so am broadly satisfied.

i think on the whole i am so scared of dds turning into these uberconfident, plummy voiced, precocious prep school kids that i would feel better with state ed.

ok i have expressed that wrong- it's more to do with the fact that they would be so different from me, and from dh, and i don't know if that's necessarily a good thing in terms of our relationship. does that make sense? i have often admired the confidence and independence of privately educated colleagues, but i am scared that in my own kids it would make me feel even more unconfident in myself! gosh, i am screwed up!!

btw Penthe i share your dh's anthropological interest in class LOL. except in NW London it's tainted with a streak of violence which is quite disgusting really!

ok, off to pack.

DamonBradleylovesPippi · 28/02/2009 08:34

not hangover. dh in good mood and not at all stupidly suspicious - maybe because he's building god knows what in the garage this weekend . go out with male friend often as most v good friends are male - so dh had to adjust.

I meant the suburbian mums in rl think the west end is a no no and never go - prefer their kids go to enfield and the latest one told me that islington is scary and rough. the main thing I want from my kids is not to be narrow minded like in the provinces and grow up in a world that represents just a tiny part of society. obviously I do not want my kids to think this bit of suburbia is their entire world - I want them to know, and they will!, that they live in london. but I also do not want them to just mix in selective circles like the private schools.

javierbardem · 28/02/2009 09:10

well your dds can come round my parts any time, and hang out with the boyz from the hood and speak proper, innit?

Most people who have not been round here, or have been here for a bit, think that the east end is rough and unpleasant, that you get shot if you walk the streets at night, there are of course rough people, but there are a lot of warm and kind and generous people, both middle and working class, both white and black. I think this is what is unpleasant about private schooling, it is a way to avoid mixing with the working classes. Ds has a lot of friends who live on the high rises, some in deprivation, some surrounded by a lot of love. He also has a lot of middle class friends, again some in deprivation and some surrounded with love. I think all you want is your kids to hang out with kids who have enough love at home. The saddest and most disturbed school mate is actually a middle class kid who is taken to school and collected by a nanny who looks miserable, and the parents are just weird and obsessed with hte boy doing piano, learning judo, skiing , blah, blah. We forget about middle class deprivation. I suspect this kid will become a high achiever and earn lots, but whether he will be able to have a normal relationship, have empathy, have an inner life is another story.

javierbardem · 28/02/2009 09:19

sorry, this is was not meant ot be a rant at full time mums with nannies, but more at parents who forget about the emotional development of the kids, whether it is by a getting a nice nanny, or spending time with them at weekend rather than packing them off to activities, or parents who are always late taking the kids to school and pack them off infront of the telly.

SunflowerNeedsSunshine · 28/02/2009 09:38

morning,

a bit of a rough night (always when DP's away) with DD waking up crying as I got into bed and then just not really sleeping for ages and up early... and then DS woke up crying and SCARED of going to the bathroom (already daylight plus I'd forgotten the corridor light on last night.... )

class system gets on my nerves so much... I think because in italy we don't get it to this extent, I mean, what am I? same working class as the neighbour who's on benefit with 5 kids and probably deal with drugs , with latest bf pretending he still lives in liverpool though works and lives here (is not really a bad area it's just this family, and they are polite at least), or middle class because of our jobs and circle of friends?

I lived briefly in a rough part of islington (really scary at night) but that was on the borders with dalston, maybe that's where she'd been?, but the rest of islington I really liked, there were a couple of pretty shops (though for me, especially then, they were guardare ma non toccare)

SunflowerNeedsSunshine · 28/02/2009 09:39

franca was having few probs with her connection recently, maybe it's that, she always at least pops in...

Penthesileia · 28/02/2009 10:10

Pippi - @ going out and having a good time. I cannot even imagine when I'll be able to do that again!

Agree, javier, with your description of the east end. Admittedly, I only work there, so I realise it's different from living there; but I've never felt stressed or scared, even late at night when pissed after a work do. In reality it's teenage boys & young men (usually black or asian) who are the real victims and - again admittedly, given the social demographic - the perpetrators of crime round there.

But as you're all saying, what you think, and what you fear, who you are, is all part of what you know and experience as you grow up.

cupofteaplease · 28/02/2009 10:23

Hi all, well I introduced myself last week from England- and I am now here in Italy.

I'm working in a school in Montecchio in the 4th Class. I cannot believe the long school day children have here! 8-4pm seems a long time. Most classes don't even go outside to play at lunchtime! However, the children have been so welcoming and the staff too.

We are staying in an appartment up in the hills (mountain?!), and the roads are very windy. My landlord has driven me into Urbino on a couple of occassions and he drives the roads so fast!

Anyway, there doesn't seem to be an awful lot to do in Urbino, so I think we may take a trip out to Fano or Pesaro this weekend. Vediamo.

Can someone explain Festa della Donna to me? I believe it is next weekend? Thanks!

SunflowerNeedsSunshine · 28/02/2009 10:42

hi cupoftea, yes, festa della donna is 8th march, and you get a bunch of mimosa and chocs hopefully . here

Penthesileia · 28/02/2009 11:05

Hi cupoftea!

Ok - have to post this here, otherwise I will post elsewhere and cause a row!

So, on the nurseries are evil thread, there's a poster called Rollmops who claims to be so good at her job in a particular industry that she will be able to take time out to look after her kids, be a SAHM, and then magically return to her exact position, no problems, when they're at school, or whatever. Of course, everyone is asking her what she does, where she works, and she is being very circumspect and not revealing it...

And I am DESPERATE to post:

"The oldest profession?"

But obviously, I daren't.

Rosa · 28/02/2009 13:09

Pippi going out and having fun ...Well one day possibly . Took dd to another play date yesterday but I stayed there this time as it was further away and the mum has twins so 3 was a bit too much.
Are you going to a Kinder hotel Sunrise ? as they are fab ! ( probably gone by now !!!)
I am guessing Brange has gone skiing as well Franca was joining her dh and ds in eth mountains but my guess is they will be back for school on Monday.
Hi cup of tea - Pesaro is really nice it has a nice old centre and a few nice shops . Fano is ok as well. YOu have some lovely hill top towns and villages in that area. Urbino is a bit quiet I agree !!
Penthe you are funny I would have posted and then done a runner !!!

OP posts:
DamonBradleylovesPippi · 28/02/2009 15:22

penthe !! yes you should have. I am not going into any of these threads anymore.

well I have lived in quite worse areas than islington in my 13 years. what made me want to move was the arrival of dd1. all of a sudden I needed more space, parks and things to do for children and families, decent schools. If I could have stayed a bit more central I would have. however I do really like where I am now and would not want to go anywhere else (except the townhouse in bloomsbury of course!)

I'm waiting for dd1 to finish watching peppa before making the cake.

javier plenty of that slang in here too not to worry. we will nevertheless come over and play. oh and agree about all you said.

DamonBradleylovesPippi · 28/02/2009 15:30

sunflower what happened with dp and his job?

DamonBradleylovesPippi · 28/02/2009 20:35

OP posts:
javierbardem · 01/03/2009 13:47

horrid grey here too.

wanted to ask yoiur opinion ladies, about how you think good self-esteem develops in children, have a friend with a 10year old who has apparently low self=esteem, how can a paretn help, how does it happen.

Penthesileia · 01/03/2009 17:44

Not sure how it happens (beyond the obvious of course: e.g. are the parents very critical and demanding, never satisfied, etc.?).

I read somewhere that praising a child (or indeed any person!) for effort and hard work rather than for results in whatever activity (doesn't just have to be academic) can have an important effect on self-esteem, as the individual values their own activity, and not the end result (so, this way children who might not get As, for instance, can be rewarded with praise for the effort they put in, etc.).

Apparently, people who are/were praised in this way, ultimately end up more "successful", as they value hard work, rather than quick results, IYSWIM.

Are the parents giving the child enough 1-to-1 time? Just hanging out, finding out what s/he does and likes, and thinks?

DamonBradleylovesPippi · 01/03/2009 19:38

javier I second what penthe said. but my own brain is pretty blank at the moment. I just want to sit down with a cuppa and a bar of dark chocolate. I'm so stupidly daft that I'm debating how to spel chocolate. boh.

javierbardem · 01/03/2009 19:48

thank you penthe. the parents are lovely from what i see, very supportive. maybe 1 to 1 lacks a bit, they work long hours and have lots of kids, boh. what is the difference between self confidence and high selfesteem?

damon get yourself a beer and come on here.

javierbardem · 01/03/2009 19:52

i always tell my dcs how incredibly beautiful they are. as well as funny and smart and warm and anything lovely that pops in my head at the time.
many people seem to think that to tell especially a girl that she is beautiful is going to teach a girl that she will be judged for her looks. I do want my dd, as well as ds, to think of themselves as beautiful, why should i not tell them? are people going mad?

javierbardem · 01/03/2009 19:55

and when would you start pocket money?
