Welcome, ciao, hello

OP posts:
PippiCalzelunghe · 06/02/2009 20:05

Mal di Pietre, it's really good. yes it is. lovely.

only read two decarlo ages ago. first one I thought . the second one 'due di due' was so obvious and crap and pretentious and unimmaginative that really pissed me off (still does as you can see ). it's the first book I happily threw in the bin!! I am not surprised he's a prat! I bet he thinks quite highly of himself.

thanks for all southamerican suggestions. I read all allende up to say 5 years ago, not sure I could read it again. amado I like a lot. I read one called mariti which was good too. never read de bernieres although I've got one on my bedside cabinet - not the mandolin one. i prob have that one somewhere too. ammaniti I liked. cammileri never read, not too kin on gialli after reading all agatha christie when prob 12 or smthng, but maybe I should. baricco read one and thought 'a bit overreated' and didn;t read anyfurther. last italian I read was 'i numeri primi' or something by that guy who writes for io donna. thought it was not bad.

DH is out tonight so I'll copy all your suggestions somewhere.

dd2 has got conjunctivites too now and temp. she's in bed though povera.

re the knox/sollecito I've got loads of amici avvocati... and my priest d'infanzia is amanda's one...

BS which post...let me go and find the pearl of wisdom...

PippiCalzelunghe · 06/02/2009 20:06

keen

PippiCalzelunghe · 06/02/2009 20:09

BS I'm glad you got the gist of it as I struggled to make sense of it myself now. must have been when playing 'rubamazzo' with dd1, who by the way is coughing like a chainsmoker atm.

hothell · 06/02/2009 20:37

i threw my 2 di 2 too, great minds and all that....

so what do people in perugia say, surely they did it, no?

pippi,i have a marcella serrano if you want it, tried to read it, but not my thing, can bring it you when i see you, it's in italian

lots of interesting suggestions

john stewart is on

Penthesileia · 06/02/2009 20:37

Poor DD, Pippi !

Argh: all this talk of going back to work is making me feel nervous . There's a SAHM/WOHM thread raging at the moment, but I'm too tired to post on it.

My biggest achievement today was that I made muffins. My second biggest achievement today was that I only ate 2 of them.

I am v. impressed by the breadth of reading here! Beyond Allende and Marquez, I've read little S. American lit. My reading has, pretty much, rotated around the European (including Russia and N.American canon.

Last Italian book I read was the first Albano mystery (in English though ). I basically only read Agatha Christie in Italian translation [lazy] . And Peanuts, as I mentioned before.

PippiCalzelunghe · 06/02/2009 20:46

I noticed that south american literatue is very popular and known in italy. not so much here except for allende and such. that's why I asked you. my italian friend introduced me to amado and someone else. I cannot read it all the times as the prose and description is very 'rich' and colorful and full of stories inside a story iyswim. but is a change for the modern dry american literature.
ah I loved the brother karamazof, which I will always associate with a trip to scotland during which I bore my friend to death with 'do you know what alexei did now? etc . has anyone read 'i demoni'? I mjust admit I never managed to finish 'crime and punishment' it was far too dreary for me.

hot LOL! And I do not throw away books. Normally I cannot even give them back to charity shop (in case my children will want to read them - have done so well before I had kids) you should see the rage with which I threw it as well.

I'd like to read some scandinavian or modern german tbh. banana yoshimoto I loved. then read too many and they started mixing all in my head.

PippiCalzelunghe · 06/02/2009 20:50

hot I'm trying to think. we spoke about it a lot when I go with the loyers friends but for the life of me I cannot think of any 'inside info' or gossip. I think no one thinks they haven't done it tbh. there's def a seedier side to pretty turisty pg. I'll share if I remember.

hothell · 06/02/2009 21:00

what a saddo i am, seeking dirty gossip on some poor dead girl.

i have a friend who is wellread and raves about i demoni. i love crime et chatiment can you imagine i loved dostoyevski in bloody french when i was 17...my biggest achievement (after my babies of course)

does anyone know an andrea vitali?

is the cough viral pippi? our flu was mainly iwth smokers' cough, so we waited out.

still on mansfield park, hte longest book ever, cannot put it down though i think fanny si fa troppi problemi.

anyone read mill on the floos?

hothell · 06/02/2009 21:01

floss

i loved middlemarch and daniel deronda, so i am thinking of george eliot now

hothell · 06/02/2009 21:04

lol, there is always a sahm and wohm debate/fight raging!

i spent ages reading a private/state school thread, people get so nasty, with one poster even threatening to report another poster.

Penthe are you missing work and dying to go back or you are quite happy with the life revolving around the baby?

PippiCalzelunghe · 06/02/2009 21:05

no haven't read any onf them tbh, ignorant .

I'm sure it's just a cold and cough thing. but it's a bit dry so when it starts they can't stop.

I really must go back to uni and write some essays... I am not in control of my written english anymore. I am very serious.

who's john steward btw?

Penthesileia · 06/02/2009 21:10

I love my job, so do miss it in many respects; but the thought of leaving my baby with someone else makes me , even though I don't think I'm cut out to be a SAHM in the long term anyway (might go cuckoo). Aaaarrrgghhh.

beforesunrise · 06/02/2009 21:15

Andrea VItali is fun, but really light and fluffy- a bit like reading (italian) vanity fair!

jon stewart, pippi, is your new crush ;), just tune in more 4 at 8.30 every evening!

PippiCalzelunghe · 06/02/2009 21:15

penthe I wouldn't worry yet as I am sure there'll be plenty when you go back to work (missing the baby/feeling useless as a mum and at work/wondering whether your LO is happy in care/angry at having to take days off when LO is sick or angry that you cannot be with him/tired and rushed/not as efficient workwise as you were and and and not able to go for a drink after work whenever you feel like it!) I was even sad that I wouldn't know whether dd1 had had a poo or not (and I swear I am not a earth mother at all).

I used to be very upset about the impossibility of having it all and quite resentful towards dh at first. now I am not because 1.he doesn't have it all either 2.I have the kids which is much more rewarding and important than my silly boring job (yours sounds a lot more interesting though) 3. life is one and I want to enjoy myself, the kids and my family.

I am sure I am a disappointment for my teenage feminist self. for all these reasons for all the love I've got for my dc I am so happy to have had 30 years on my own! at least I've had lots of time to be with me nel bene e nel male.

PippiCalzelunghe · 06/02/2009 21:17

is it BS? is it still on?

beforesunrise · 06/02/2009 21:17

i would love to contribute to the thoughts on working etc... but i am too down about it right now... perhaps in a few weeks once i get into the routine.

gotta find the schools thread now!

PippiCalzelunghe · 06/02/2009 21:17

is it BS? is it still on?

beforesunrise · 06/02/2009 21:19

just finished hence why i am here... sorry. try a clip on youtube for an introduction?

PippiCalzelunghe · 06/02/2009 21:20

oh I've seen the website - will check it out. see when dh is out there's no way I'm turning the tv on. for once a bit of civilised peace and quiet!

hothell · 06/02/2009 21:21

stewart is an american comedian very funny and liberal, makes fun of bush and stupidity of americans and their news, his show is on more 4 evey weekday and is called the daily show.

tove jansonn is a finnish writer/artist - famous for the moomins comic strips- her novels also meant to be good

PippiCalzelunghe · 06/02/2009 21:27

I wouldn't bother with the SAHM/WOHM thread as it goes like this:

Sahm: I love my kids and I want to be there when they come back from school. I also trust my DH and what's his is mine etc.
wohm: I need a space to use my brain and be myself. my carrer is important for me the kids learn and enjoy being in care.
sahm:you'll regret it. those are the best years. how can you leave your precious ones to a strangers. why having them in the first place!
wohm: you are fat and ugly with horrible stained clothes. your husband doesn;t fancy you anymore because you moan all the time and is shagging the pa. when he lives you for a younger version of your old self you'll be penniless, bitter and unfulfilled.
sahm: you'll regret it on your deathbed bitch
wohm: you'll regret it when the kids are at school and don;t need you anymore bitch!

see if is not true

Penthesileia · 06/02/2009 21:28

Thanks, Pippi.

My hope is that I can squeeze my working week into 2/3 days - my dept. are pretty good at flexible timetabling, then I'll take one day for work/research, and DH will take one day off per week, which means we only need to think about 3 days a week when she's not with one of us... Hmmmm.

John Stewart is v. funny.

Penthesileia · 06/02/2009 21:29

LOL Pippi. It's funny because it's true!

PippiCalzelunghe · 06/02/2009 21:29

I liked the name tove - it's just impossible to pronounce correctly if you're not a swede.

PippiCalzelunghe · 06/02/2009 21:31

that sounds perfect arrangement tbh. btw I will not consider myself a sahm for life. as I won't consider myself to be anything for life actually.

(ups, forgot marriage )
