SunflowerNeedsSunshine · 03/02/2009 16:41

try, but they're addictive ... actually, better not go there for a bit, til at least I've lost these last stubborn kgs...

hothell · 03/02/2009 16:58

Franca, how big is the piece of veal meant to be? Do you put it in whole? Sorry ignorance. Pippi havent' forgotten to email you my tel numbers, cannot wait to see you!!!!
also trying to stay offline ,mumsnet detox for me too, as i am reading very little and my new year solution, amongst the many was to do less internet, read more and see more people! Povera me. And lose preganncy weight and learn to cook more. We still do regularly la pasta e ceci e agnello e rosmarino di Pippi. Buonissimi.
By the way Herzog is wonderful, Bellow e' bravissimo!!!!! Also Love Alan Bennet and read Beloved by Toni Morrison.
Brange, i made the banana cake with ds, thank youuuuuuuuu! I think it is going to be yummy!
Flu this year was deffo a bastard!

Penthesileia · 03/02/2009 17:16

Hey hot - thanks for that. I can't believe I've never read any Bellow! I've been meaning to for ages, as love Roth, and Roth loves Bellow (does that make sense?)... So, finally got Herzog the other day: now just need to find time...

So, I caved (no resistance at all ) and bought RR today... Now have huge pile of novels to plough through...

How are you getting on with your new year's resolutions (e.g. to see more people)?

All this talk of food... Mmmm... I'm hungry...

gio71 · 03/02/2009 18:26

mmm I want to come to your house for dinner Franca. I am going to try your recipe for arrosto. My minestrone this eve seems very unappealing now. Sunflower your day sounded idyllic in the snow, am very

hothell · 03/02/2009 19:29

Doing badly with all my resolutions, of course. But spending time with la ciccietta is a delight.

I Like some Roth, Patrimony, Portnoy, Everyman and Goodbye Columbus.

Don;t get many of his others though, the worse is the one about the old man dying remembering his sexual exploits. I was disappointed by American Pastoral, I stupidly expected to be told why the main character, is it Merry? committs her terrible crime, as if that was the point. Will try his new one, is that Indignancy? It will be a tragedy when he dies, all the great American writers ahve passed away. I love Updike, though even he has written some books i cannot fathom. What are you reading at the moment penthe? I am on Mansfield Park.

francagoestohollywood · 03/02/2009 19:52

Feck I wrote a long post, which got cancelled by dodgy connection

In a nutshell: Gio, you are welcome anytime . I'm not a great cook, quite unimaginative, but roasts seem to venirmi bene. Hot yes, it's a big piece, don't cut it!

I have never made new year's resolutions, as I'm lazy.

I'm not too keen on Philip Roth (dh is), I much prefer joseph roth. I do like lots of American writers. Have I recommended already "Dope" by Sara Gran?

hothell · 03/02/2009 20:12

Will look up this Sara Gran.

What do you guys think of Anita Brookner? Read Siri Hustvedt, will not touch her ever again.

I have a big stack of books and not enough time.

hothell · 03/02/2009 20:20

Just looked her up, it's a noir too much a la chandler for my taste. But keep the suggestions coming, love meeting new writers to add to my pile.

I have just remembered i would love to read books about motherhood, babyhood, but not the usual crappy stuff, i would like to hear a good writer's view of having a baby. I liked the Rachel Cusk, though i know she is hated on mumsnet. Anyone else has any ideas? You see, I love my ciccietta of a baby so much....

francagoestohollywood · 03/02/2009 20:21

Never read both of them, I'm afraid. Has the parcel arrived yet?

hothell · 03/02/2009 20:21

and to say i wanted to detox from mumsnet...where the hell is everybody?

hothell · 03/02/2009 20:22

oh, ciao, thought you had gone! No, no parcel probably swallowed by the snow. havent' seen the postman for 2 days...

francagoestohollywood · 03/02/2009 20:25

Oh yes, I forgot about the snow
No, I'm still here. Glad you are still here too .

francagoestohollywood · 03/02/2009 20:30

Missed one of your posts. I liked Rachel Cusk too. Other than that, I don't know. Will think.

Rosa · 03/02/2009 20:36

Oh Sputnik Happy Birthday ..delay it by a week and you will enjoy the cake much more . Seen there is more snow forecast for you Uk people only rain for us !
Gio thanks for the Angelina Ballerina time I have not looked at the guida to be honest . DD is ok with the wiggles but she likes the Dorothy song.
I have booked my flights for the uk . Paid Eu88 on Easy Jet for 3 of us ( minirosa, dd1 and me) and then £92 on Flybe to get home - Flybe site very sneaky as you need to watch the box on the right as they add in things when you are not looking , insurance , let you choose your seat at a cost , bags etc etc . Now just have to plan getting back and how going to cope at LGW !!!

francagoestohollywood · 03/02/2009 20:45

when are you going?

francagoestohollywood · 03/02/2009 20:50

And of course Happy Birthday Sput

Rosa · 03/02/2009 21:37

July - but Easy jet prices were so good we have booked early !! Minirosa not waking up for last feed so goimg to bed only to be woken probably just as I drop off !!

SunflowerNeedsSunshine · 03/02/2009 21:41

oh, happy birthday Sputnik!

Penthesileia · 03/02/2009 21:41

Happy Birthday!!!!

Auguri a te, dum tee tum...

Hot - I am trying to read "Oil!" by Upton Sinclair (because I saw There Will Be Blood, and I hate seeing films when I don't know the book), but I can't seem to get into it, and keep rereading the same pages.

Otherwise, I recently read "Kindergarten" by Peter Rushforth which I really enjoyed, if that's the right word for such a moving little book; and Fire in the Blood & the Courilof Affair by Nemirovsky.

DO NOT READ The Yellow Wallpaper if you are looking for happy post-partum stories!

Though not fiction, I enjoyed reading Our Babies, Our Selves: How Biology & Culture Shape the Way We Parent, by Meredith Small - anthropology-lite.

And, though not by a woman, Desmond Morris, Babywatching is lots of fun.

Penthesileia · 03/02/2009 21:44

I was thinking just now, though I've only been on this forum for about 8 months, I'm already so bored and bewildered by a lot of what goes on here - the weird fighting and cattiness... This is an ANONYMOUS forum: why would people waste their energies fighting with people they don't know??? I don't get it. All this Moldie/namechanging/blah de blah.

I like this thread.

francagoestohollywood · 03/02/2009 21:48

How bizarre Penthe, I read The Yellow Wallpaper this summer, as I bought a collection of short stories about "haunted" houses.

Rosa, we are going to a wedding in the UK in mid july and was mulling over going to Cornwall for a few days!

francagoestohollywood · 03/02/2009 21:50

and the story is so not about a haunted houses...

francagoestohollywood · 03/02/2009 21:51

See, you are healthier than me. I've been on here for 2 + yrs and still find some threads deeply irritating.

Penthesileia · 03/02/2009 21:53

Don't get me wrong, I find them irritating. But I just can't be arsed to care about it that much.

Life's too short to waste time fighting with strangers.
