PippiCalzelunghe · 02/02/2009 21:39

joseph heller of catch 22.

PippiCalzelunghe · 02/02/2009 21:40

oh yes me too sunflower. that is my nightmare. anyway if it works for hot it'll work for me.

francagoestohollywood · 02/02/2009 21:42

is it dd's first day at nursery?

Pippi, I'll google the book, as i've never heard of it . I'm very excited of having "discovered" richard yates. Do read it. Start with the easter parade, as I think it is less ansiogeno than RR.
It's been a fruitful year, I read lots of books, and many were really good. Shame that my memory has gone and I could list only 5 out of the 20 I read

francagoestohollywood · 02/02/2009 21:43

catch 22, of course (never read it though )

PippiCalzelunghe · 02/02/2009 21:53

I got RR free at waitrose so I might start with that one. I don;t mind ansiogeno (maybe I will later) and I am happy to dissect and analyse marriage - I do see it as a beast to tame tbh. I feel that after 4.5 years I am just beginning to anuderstand some of it's workings. if there's smthing to learn so to avoid possible pitfalls I'm all open for it. will let you know while I'm reading it.

HOW HOW can you read so many books? when? how? and it's not you're not here... [pippi wonders what she's doing wrong]

francagoestohollywood · 02/02/2009 21:59

It's weird as (up to this point, as i haven't finished it yet), I'm not seeing the book as about marriage, that much. It is more about the individuals (who are incidentally married, and yes, of course, the marriage is very much a character of the book) and their dissection. Boh!!!

I don't know. I always read before going to bed. And I read a lot on holiday. But my children are older than yours and when we are on holidays with friends and their children they tend to leave you long stretches of time to read... plus they are at school . And I also read a lot in the shop where I occasionally work.

PippiCalzelunghe · 02/02/2009 22:02

ah yes the kids at school (mornings on your own) and the shop and the children playing together. GREAT!! thank you my dear franca. now I'm not dreading anymore my dd growing up. I'm serious.

no is not dd's first day... I'm just going mad.

PippiCalzelunghe · 02/02/2009 22:09

I see what you mean re two individual people locked in 'the marriage'. But that's what I mean. I cannot see 'the marriage' can you? I can only see two people who have decided to go along the same path and sometimes manage easily and brilliantly and lovingly and sometimes struggling. (forgive me if the book is nothing like this). earlier on when I was trying to see 'the marriage' I found it very difficult. like in the very beginning of motherhood when you suppose to feel 'motherhood' and you don't. it's scary as it makes you think of yourself as a failure.

I am not drunk btw

PippiCalzelunghe · 02/02/2009 22:12

that's it after my ramblins I'm going to bed.

I have been on MN quite often recently (most probably due to you ladies being so interesting and culturally challenging ). however I think it might be time for a small detox. for these reasons I might be here a bit less - not a lot.

notte.

francagoestohollywood · 02/02/2009 22:17

Oh I'll miss you Pippi. Come on, staaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay.

SunflowerNeedsSunshine · 02/02/2009 22:18

evening all. wasn't London wonderful, and pathetic at the same time!?! as if they didn't expect snow, though it's the same thing every year, they always wait until it's too late to grit as they don't want to waste any, same old story...

but we loved it!! when I went to bed last night it already looked great and was hoping there'd be soem snow left for DS to play with today, but wasn't expecting what there was this morning. woke up to s.one stuck in their car outside the window! couldn't even open the front door!! so funny, but I managed to have a good old snowball fight with DS (not sure who was more excited ) while DP worked from home (so no MN til now) and looked after DD. and tonight we made a huge snowman and then at 6.30 went for an hour walk to the park, DD wrapped around me asleep, DS constantly throwing snowballs to DP........ just a great day, topped by a good fish & chips!!

agree about the spending in UK, I was shocked at the easiness to get credit cards etc. OTOH, all friends and relatives that come over love car boot sales and always have to take them to at least one, they always get great bargains, not enough mercatini delle pulci in Italy.

francagoestohollywood · 02/02/2009 22:18

Yes, I agree about "feeling motherhood" totally

SunflowerNeedsSunshine · 02/02/2009 22:20

yeah, more fun (hopefully) in the snow tomorrow and no early start, just checked school's website and they're closed tomorrow!

francagoestohollywood · 02/02/2009 22:21

How lovely sunflower, a nice walk in the snowy park! And I love palle di neve too.
In Milan it is always the same. They predict snow days in advance and then they are never prepared. Why? And they get all shocked about it snowing. Hello?????? Milan has/used to have continental weather. It used to snow a lot, every year. What's so shocking?

Penthesileia · 02/02/2009 22:25

Pippi! I'll miss you too. But understand if you need time away.

Ooooh, now I want to read RR... But already have:

Roth, Indignation; I Married a Communist
Nemirovsky, All Our Worldly Goods
Morrison, A Mercy
Wright, Native Son
Bellow, Herzog
Bennett, The Uncommon Reader

and others to read/finish reading... So can't justify another bookshop raid...

The snow has been very beautiful here in C; just the right sorts of buildings and spaces to look magical.

DD 8mo somewhat perplexed by the experience.

I still feel completely weirded out by the fact that I have a baby. Like - do people know I have a baby - a real one...???

It's strange watching her, this little consciousness that doesn't quite yet know it's a consciousness...

francagoestohollywood · 02/02/2009 22:34

Ah I love that Nemirovski woman!

That is so true Penthe. Stop talking like this about babies. You - and I mean all of you with small babies - are making me broody. BROODY. And I can't entertain the thought. OK?

I should gop to bed now.

Pippi, rethink your position about mn consumption... don't be too sensible

SunflowerNeedsSunshine · 02/02/2009 22:34

I know what you mean Penthe, we were getting the 2 ready for bed the other night and we just looked at each other and said " are they really ours?"...
and DD started blowing raspberries today.... ALL day... constantly, even while she was feeding/sucking on dummy/muslin......... and she looks so proud of herself too!!

Penthesileia · 02/02/2009 22:38

Yes, love Nemirovsky: I love the almost cruel nature of her writing: she suffers no fools, it seems. The Ball is one of the most acidic little tales I've ever read.

Awwww @ raspberries! So cute! I love the proud face - "Wahey! I am the first person ever to do this", it says!

DD did that a couple of months ago - spit everywhere! But in the past month she has mastered actually sticking out her tongue, which is quite hilarious.

Penthesileia · 02/02/2009 22:40

Night everyone.

I must go and get some water; I've been thirsty for hours, but have been too lazy to go and get something to drink.

Ciao ciao.

SunflowerNeedsSunshine · 02/02/2009 22:53

wanted to watch tv, but feeling reaaly tired - DD has been waking up TWICE in the night for feeding for the last few nights.. time to start weaning soon, I guess...... noooooo, she's growing too fast!

anyway, notte everyone

francagoestohollywood · 03/02/2009 10:44

Babies are so delightful when they discover they are able to do things for the first time
Anyway, I must stop thinking about babies, and chubby toddlers. Understand?

Penthe, I haven't read The Ball yet, I gave it as a present to my aunt 2 Christmas ago. I need to buy it again. I think she is a fantastic writer as well. So dry, so tense. Perfect sentences etc.

Brangelina: my parcel from Amazon has just arrived after just one week . Maybe the smistamento is more efficient in this area? Boh. I'm so delighted.

Gio, I forgot to say again at your Fil. He is a constant source of entertainment, it seems. When are you off to the UK?

francagoestohollywood · 03/02/2009 11:13

Anyone interested in the DVD of Romanzo Criminale (Scamy is in it )? Amazon sent me 2 copies (my fault I didn't check properly).

Brangelina · 03/02/2009 11:49

Ooh, a DVD with Scamy in it? I might be interested......

I'm very your parcel turned up so quickly, it must take an extra week or so to trudge it out to Brianza then. I've got another one on order, but am trying to whittle the amount of books down as it's extortionate atm.

I got an ufficiale giudiziario buzz the citofono this morning. I was shitting bricks, wondering what my crime was, but it was only a summons to the trial of the tossico who tried to steal my bicycle a year or so ago(!). DP says I shouldn't go as then he'd know what I look like and would try to harass me or worse. I personally don't see a problem and get really irritated by the attitude of not sticking your neck out in case someone sees. Am I nuts though? The summons is obligatory anyway, I don't really have a choice in the matter.

OP posts:
francagoestohollywood · 03/02/2009 11:55

Yes, it's the Michele Placido movie inspired, I think, by the banda della Magliana. Kim Rossi Stuart is starring as well.
You want it?

I'm impressed that they actually managed to get someone who was stealing a bike. I thought that they even didn't bother for this

francagoestohollywood · 03/02/2009 11:56

mmmmm and in the copertina Scamy is wearing jeans and a leather jacket mmmmmmmmmmmmmm
