Boys names - quick poll

Don't know what sex I'm having but we're struggling to pick a boys name. All seem to be "taken" - in fact 2 potentials have been taken in last 2 days!

But, bit shy about posting this now, we both like teh name...Jesse.

Will he get laughed at (You big jessy) or have a lifetime of saying "Yes, Jesse, you know, just like Jesse James"

Opinions please.

Glad you all like Patrick so much, that's my ds's name!

Jesse is lovely, go for it.

Janh · 15/03/2005 13:35

Well it's not a name I'd ever considered but there's a v cute TV presenter called Dermot, isn't there? He's the only one I know of so it has positive connotations! Lovely to have the great-grandads' names.

Preggars · 15/03/2005 13:35

Hi Tinker

Jesse is lovely.

Friends and family come out with such strong opinions when you let them 'in' on chosen names.

My son is called Oscar. Everyone absolutely adores his name now, but we got rude comments from MIL and Grandma when we told them prior to birth.

Not making the same mistake telling Grandma again (sadly lost MIL since)... although the sneaky little thing (love her really - she's just an opionated 94 year old!) is trying to fish (as am expecting no.2 soon).

Similar thing really.. want to call her Bo. but this will now be her middle name as can imagine the kids at school being crawl (B.O.), and I don't want her to have any grief caused by us.

Do like Irish names and grandparents were Irish but we're not a very Irish family, iyswim, not overly connected to teh country so it would be because I like the name rather than the origin.

JanH fancies Dermot
Nur nur nur nur nur

WideWebWitch · 15/03/2005 13:37

Ooh I like Sadie Tinker, goes well with your dd's name too, what name does she want?

Janh · 15/03/2005 13:37

There was a grown-up Gabriel in one of M Drabble's books (Jerusalem the Golden I think, large family, all with very fancy names) and he was very cool and sexy so he has always been my image of a Gabriel. Can you get DP to read it?

Gabriel not one I'd choose (persoanlly) but then it's the middle name of a man I detest with a great passion

bundle · 15/03/2005 13:38

i love unusual names

dyzzidi · 15/03/2005 13:38

OOh what about Kian I like that

WideWebWitch · 15/03/2005 13:38

And there's Gabriel Byrne delicious imo!.

Toothache · 15/03/2005 13:38

Tinker - In Scotland "Ya Big Jessie!!" is still commonly used and is wellknown due to Billy Connelly! So I wouldn't use that name, but it depends where you are.

My ds is called Toby. Which is really unusual up here, but everyone keeps telling me it's a dogs name.

Preggars - I love the name Oscar. It was one of my favourites had dd been a boy, but DH was having none of it!

bundle · 15/03/2005 13:40

love nancy, matilda, eliza. maisy is a bit too maisy maisy mouse for me as dd2 got a new dvd of her for xmas!

Janh · 15/03/2005 13:40

Oooh, he is very nice, www - and older than me, that makes a nice change!

Those women are a bit optimistic, aren't they - "Barb Castle" amused me!

dyzzidi · 15/03/2005 13:40

I don't really like gabriel as i am not a fan of names that can be shortened as Mine always is.

I knoe a gabriel and he gets called Gabe.

Preggars · 15/03/2005 13:40

thanks Toothache

Janh · 15/03/2005 13:41

Tinker,

sorry another not keen on Jesse. But if you love it, go for it and ignore the critics

Janh · 15/03/2005 13:43

There you are then, Tink - Gabriel Oscar for your boy (hope your surname doesn't begin with a D though )

Tinker · 15/03/2005 13:44

Hmm, may keep Jesse for a middle name. But Bob Dylan and Ron Wood both have sons called Jesse so see it as cool rock stars' childrens name.

Gabriel Byrne - hmm

Opinons on Dominic and Leo then. They are all mostly Irish the ones I like aren't they. Have told daughter we're having Helmut

i know someone who dithered between oscar & gabriel - is there a theme developing here? (she chose gabriel, and then lucien for her 2nd)

Lonelymum · 15/03/2005 13:44

Tinker, if it just that a friend or colleague has already used your favourite name, don't let that put you off. I chickened out of calling dd a certain name because a friend had already used it and I almost instantly regretted giving dd the name she has instead. (The original name is her middle name though). I don't even know the friend anymore and I am sure she would not have minded if I had chosen her dd's name. Go for what you want most, be it someone else's choice or a name like Jesse or whatever. You only choose a child's name once and you don't want to regret your choice like I did.
