Thought I'd start a new thread as the other was getting a bit long!

Now where were we?

OP posts:

Thanks for the suggestions....buying a small selection and trying them out sounds like a good plan. And I love the idea of fleece and pretty prints!

I'm using muslins at the moment (dd is 3mo and smallish), but I've got a pile of terries to use when she needs something more substantial. They were the ones I had when I was a baby. I tried one out the other day though, and the nappy nippas won't grip them, so I might have to have a rethink - either get some nappy pins or some new nappies I guess.

Oh dear, I said I'd never be one of those mums who was interested in talking about nappies...

Just to add my tuppence worth - I really like tots bots - my 3rd type of nappy. I started off with imse vimse - a pain in the bum really & now the boys are older they litereally just fall off. Motherease I used to like, but again, don't fit well and tend to unpop & fall of ds - he's just gone 2 and not especially huge. Plus they're very frayed around the edges now, so not too impressed with their staying power.

Like I said, tb is my third type - wish I'd found them earlier - hope they last better that motherease.

I've got wraps with poppers and also velcro - both Motherease air rika I think (got dolphin pattern) Much prefer the velcro & they've lasted very very well. Good luck. btw, bea. what 'bag' do you use to line your nappy bucket - interested in pinching your idea.

morocco · 15/03/2003 14:23

big fan of tots bots myself but they do seem to be shrinking - sure my 5 month old baby can't have grown that much! Anyone else had this kind of problem? Also how do you stop the nappies getting hard - I know you can't add fabric conditioners but anything else you can do?

bea · 15/03/2003 22:17

Monkey! - pinch away! - though it would hardly be 'my' idea! ha! ha!

try this linkto Little Green Earthlets

it's great just haul it out on wash day... and chuck into machine - just make sure you leave the net open so the naps can work their way out....

Morocco... if you have a tumble dryer... chuck them in there for the first 10 mins or last 10 mins before they dry... this usually fluffs them up a little!... ffailing that i think white vinegar is supposed to work... someone on here might know better!?

bea · 15/03/2003 22:18

whoops... Monkey... my link has got one too many 'html's!... damn those links!!! here it os on long form!!! copy and paste away!

Another Tots Bots fan here, I do get a bit concerned about the sizing as well, suppose I will just have to trust them that size 2 will do 'till potty training! Have also heard that white vinegar is good for softening the nappies, I think you also have to watch that you are not using too much detergent as that apparently makes them harder, I am cutting down from one washing tablet to 1/2 although I only wash 3 or 4 nappies, one wrap, one booster, 3 or 4 fleece liners and half a dozen wipes together and think that one tablet may be too much.

I just wish the information about modern cloth nappies was available to everyone, I wouldn't have dreamed of trying cloth had I not had internet access. I assumed it was all about wet pailing, folding terry nappies, nappy pins and plastic pants. I had heard of shaped nappies but had been told that they weren't very good (boots/mothercare own brand), I would have gone for cloth with DS1 had I know how easy it would be!

DS2 is now full-time in cloth we have 10 Tots Bots (not very adventurous, the Tots just worked well for us and I didn't want to risk trying anything else), two ME airflow wraps (one white, one with whales) and I am waiting on a Nappysaurus wrap, zebra ponyskin with french blue fleece, I can't wait until this arrives!!! Would like to try a Minky or a Bearbehind mind you, arrrrgh I keep trying not to get addicted!!!

Joe1 · 16/03/2003 00:18

I now have my 5.5month dd in tots bots, I love them, size two. We have used them on and off since she was about 3 months but sometimes they were just too big. Dont worry about them lasting, I still use them now and again for my ds and he is 2.5yrs and they still fit just fine.

monkey · 16/03/2003 15:32

I've got another question for you experts! I've been using washables for over 3.5 years, but this is a new one on me. Ds's nappies all of a sudden really stink badly of amonia - it even stings my eyes when I take the lid off the bucket. Like I said, I've never experienced this before. Is it my laundry skills? (Although I'\m not doing anything different) or is he sick & do I need to take him to docs??

Demented · 16/03/2003 23:41

Grasping at straws here Monkey but could there be anything wrong with your washing machine. A few years ago my washing was constantly coming out the machine smelly, I though it was because I was leaving them in the drum too long before emptying it, it then developed another problem and a repair man came out to look at it, turns out the pump was broken and had been for a while. Might be worth checking.

Ah, yes, the morning nappy. Especially lovely if toddler likes to bounce on parent's head first thing in the morning. "No, no, not the nappy!" DH used to shriek every morning when DS came jumping into bed.

Tea tree oil in the nappy bucket helped a lot.

Demented · 21/03/2003 15:53

I have just received my nappysaurus this morning and can't wait to try it! DS2 will look just gorgeous in it, hope it performs well!

DS2 spent an hour in the leisure centre creche this morning and they had to change his nappy (he was wearing a Tots Bots but I had a couple of disps in the changing bag), they were all really interested in the nappies and didn't seem to have a problem with using them, I wouldn't however expect them to put cloth back on him or deal with the poo I am just glad I can send him in cloth as he is only there for an hour and most times doesn't need his nappy changed.

How is everyone else getting on?

Pimpernel · 21/03/2003 17:22

I've tried a few wraps now, and, yes, they are much nicer to use than plastic pants. I like the Motherease wrap best, and the Popolin one was OK, although the velcro seems to stick to everything. I didn't get on with the Kooshies wrap - it leaks every time I use it. I loved the look of the tie dye wraps on bea's Twinkle Twinkle link, so I might try one of them as well. Will still keep a supply of plastic pants for emergencies though.

Must admit I've rather given up on the idea of the 30(ish) year old terries, and bought some new terry squares that the nappy nippas work on! Nappy pins are great for holding up my trousers, post pregnancy, but I really don't fancy using them near dd.

zebra · 21/03/2003 19:49

I couldn't get on with Nappy Nippas. Then again, i think mine had been thru at least 2 children previously. On the other hand, i have some 25-yr-old nappy pins that work perfectly....Pins are great!!

susanmt · 21/03/2003 22:51

OOOh demented you will LOVE the nappysaurus! We have a zebra print one for nights and it is brill. Have fun!

Demented · 22/03/2003 23:03

Yes Susanmt, we tried the Nappysaurus last night and it was wonderful! Sooooo cute! DS2 has the zebra skin one too, I told DH that would be last I would buy unless DS2 needed a bigger size but I am starting to think that another one wouldn't be a bad idea!

Greengage · 23/03/2003 21:12

I'm a great fan of washable nappies - have been using terries - they dry so fast.

However, a week ago I bought some eco-friendly disposables (Moltex) and for the first time since DD was born has had a healthy bottom without the need to resort to using Metanium.

Not sure now whether to ditch the terries and use the eco-friendly ones. What does anyone else think?

bea · 28/03/2003 19:35

demented - how was the chamomille solution for your wipes? (just seen you on nappy rash thread!) I have got a box of chamomille tea.. all ready to make the solution but not taken the plunge yet! it sounds so lovely to make up your own solution!

Greengage... i love moltex!!! i'm a part time clothie! i suppose if you really are fed up with your terries at least you've chosen an eco friendly sposie! it seems strange that your terries should cause such bad rash that you need the ole metanium all the time? what about giving them a really high temp wash... with a super rinse? you're not using too much soap powder? sorry if these questions are obvious and you've already tried this...! i'm sure someone else out ther has got some suggestions...

Demented · 28/03/2003 22:29

bea, thanks for asking, there is something quite satisfying about making your own solution. This was just a couple of mugs of chamomille tea (no sugar or milk obviously) poured over some terry flannels in an old wipes box. DS2 really did seem to find it soothing today and we seem to have avoided the need for anything stronger although I don't know whether it was the chamomille or not. I have great plans of making up a water, olive oil type solution in the morning for the wipes but haven't done it yet, I mostly find warm water is fine although I will be using the tea until this rash has gone.

We are liking the Nappysaurus only I am starting to think that for DS2 it is not the best fit, I seem to have to pull it this way and that after putting it on him to make sure all the nappy is covered, I'll just have to see how we get on and if it gets any worse sell it on UKP (I know I'm a traitor, I said I wouldn't even look there, but the nappy talk is good although a bit OTT, still not a patch on Mumsnet!).

Abigail · 30/03/2003 11:36

Reading all your comments has filled me with enthusiasm. I was planning to try reusables 'cos of the environmental concerns but I didn't realise they were so much healthier, plus could be so lovely.

Can't wait for the little one to arrive so I can start changing nappies (now that really does sound wierd)

I got some second hand Mothersease, all in one Kooshies (NCT sale) and have just got a couple of the tots bots which seem to be highly recommended so hopefully I've got enough to give it a good try!

Tissy · 30/03/2003 12:04

Welcome to a new clothie!!

Tots are lovely- can't rate them highly enough- which wraps do you have?

You may find the motherease a bit bulky on a newborn but he/ she will grow into them and they will last and last.

Can't say I like Kooshies much,we have some, but they tend to be relegated to the changing bag for emergencies- I find the outer a bit plasticy, and the fit around the legs isn't great for my scrawny dd- may of course be fine if you have a bruiser

I'm a bit of an addict... although we have plenty of nappies I keep buying more, so far we have Tots bots, Imse flannelette and organic terry, Kissaluvs, Under the Nile (like Motherease), Kooshies and Boots AIO, a Little Chicks stuffable AIO, a Fuzzibunz, Bumpy wool and PUL wraps, a Tots redrap, a Nappysaurus fleece wrap, and a Stacinator. I've got a couple of Ella's House Bumhuggers on the way...

The addiction isn't too expensive if you buy secondhand, and you can always sell on those out grown or not liked

ninja · 30/03/2003 12:14

Hi Tissy,

Just changed my name so I am replying to your reply!

So far I've bought one of each of the Rikki wraps and a red fleece one (tots readrap?) (none have arrived yet) trying to get lots of different things to try out. Have looked at the Nappysauras - I acn see when the next paycheck comes!!

My sister used Kooshies, but mainly I bought them as they were second hand, cheap and worth a try - thought the all-in-ones might be useful sometimes.

If the baby takes after dh (or me if I'm being honest!) It won't have scrawny legs - have been told it's big for dates, just got to wait 5 weeks to find out. Already 3/5 (that means nearly engaged doesn't it?) so may not even be late although I'm trying to prepare myself for the fact that it might.

Ooh it's all so exciting
