Sleepless night fretting about T and loos and lunches at big school - how neurotic am I ?!

thank you

Good morning ...am doing some washing and then off to haircut..T is going to his singing group after school - first time,so hope he enjoys it. He'll be coming home as it's getting darker which alarms me a bit - yesterday he had his singing lesson at 3.30 and so got home by 4.15,he'd run a lot of the way as it was dusky ! It's all quite well illuminated apart from a dark bit at the beginning..he could walk a slightly longer way along the main road but there are more awkward roads to cross - ahh..it's so hard isn't it ?
Apparently he lent another boy 10p yesterday, but he says this is a boy he'd lent a pen to before and had it returned...think he's going to have to make his own judgements and see who he can trust...all I've said is that I don't want him to lend his (my) money.
Am picking up friend P's children tomorrow while she's doing supply so might get to walk their puppy -aaww !
Hope you are ok and reassured about your job decision.
Hope all is well chez hotcross.

Good morning - gosh it is wet and miserable isn't it??

Have walked O and E to school and am just sitting down with my breakfast (lovely warm bowl of porridge) before getting on with some chores today.

T will be fine I am sure - it sounds like he is really finding his feet

Walking home in the dark is horrid. But I would steer away from the busy roads. I personally find it very hard to judge distance and speed of cars when it is dark and all I can see is their outline and their lights.
Could he have a torch or something for the really dark bit??

MaryAnnSingleton · 18/11/2008 09:30

yes, torch might be a good ida - thanks hippi

Hello! Sorry I've been away for so long. I've had a truly manic week, and the computer has barely been switched on. Have nearly 70 emails to read through

It sounds like you've been busy... Will read through properly later on. Am just popping on to say hello, but must go and sort out a costume for B at Rainbows tonight

I've been really immersed in organising our family's arrangements for a wedding we went to on Saturday, and Mum's 70th which was Sunday. Just because I'm not at work meant that I was expected to do most of the phoning round and shopping bits. Oh well, got it all done in the end. Mum and Dad left this morning, so I can finally get back to normal a bit now, although am panicking that Christmas is going to come whizzing along, just after my sister's 40th on the 7th December! Aaaaaaaaaaaaaargh

Will try to come on later, although I'm helping at Rainbows tonight, so no rest!

hippipotami · 18/11/2008 13:02

YIPPEE, Hotcross is here

Glad to hear you are okay. How is dh??

I get left to do the family organising too, but quite enjoy it really (makes me feel usefull...)

What costume does B need for Rainbows? [intrigued]

MaryAnnSingleton · 18/11/2008 13:25

yay hotcross !! lovely to have you back with us...you have been so busy you must be exhausted ! How is your invalid ?

This will make you laugh MAS. So I had decided not to do anything about the lunchtime vacancy job. I had asked the office about vacancies a few weeks ago but not mentioned anything since then.
Today in her bookbag E brings home an application form, with my name on it and 'via Emily, Hedgehogs' written on it
So what do I do, put it in the recycling??

MaryAnnSingleton · 18/11/2008 16:44

yes ! I'm sure that's best

OP posts:
hotcrossbunny · 19/11/2008 11:18

Morning.

MAS is right, I think Hippi. Lunch supervisor is such a poorly paid job, and not terribly fulfilling, IMO it doesn't really warrant being tied to it every day. I think you'd get very frustrated having to rush back to school for lunch, particularly when you're in the middle of something important. I'm sure you'll come across something more 'you' IYKWIM.

Dh is doing well, but getting increasingly frustrated . He's managing really well on the crutches, but is struggling to ask for help, particularly at work. I think he enjoyed seeing all the family this weekend, as he had different people to talk to, and could have a beer with our BIL, while I got on with things. I'm struggling to keep up with all my chores and his. I keep forgetting bin day is Friday, and have to rush out when I hear the lorry. I'll miss it one of these days, I'm sure!

B went as Snow White to Rainbows last night, and I was the Queen of Hearts It's the first time I've helped, and I was shocked at how chaotic and undisciplined it is. Tbh I'm seriously thinking about pulling B out. She'd be far better off playing with a friend after school, or going swimming or something. It was her Promise night, and she didn't have a clue what she was promising to do, and the other children shouted said it for her. All in all a waste of time I think

Right, must go and finish my letter of complaint to Travelodge.....

MaryAnnSingleton · 19/11/2008 11:20

Letter of comp;laint ? have I missed something ?

OP posts:
hippipotami · 19/11/2008 12:19

Letter of complaint? What happened at that Travellodge??

Our Rainbows is quite sweet. But compared to O's Cubs or even Beavers, it is a bit chaotic.
But the leader has kept the group small, and they do sweet things like baking, crafts, singing and dancing, storytelling, biscuit decorating, puzzles, games etc.
E loves it. In fact she is going on her first ever Rainbows 'camp' next month to the GirlGuide West campsite at Tilford. Should be fun

hippipotami · 19/11/2008 12:20

Still uhmming and aahing about the application form. It would be around £170 per month, which is more than I get paid at teh moment!!

hotcrossbunny · 19/11/2008 12:27

Oh sorry, meant to explain why!

Well, in a nutshell, the Travelodge in Canterbury is to be avoided at all costs. It was shockingly awful.

My parents arrived Friday night, booked in and checked that we'd all been allocated rooms on the ground floor next to each other. Their room was really tired and tatty and they had to ask for clean towels and mugs. Saturday night we all got to the TL at about 8.30 to be told that some of the rooms had no electricity, including all of our rooms The girl on the desk was utterly hopeless and out of her depth, the emergency electrician couldn't come out til the next morning, so were we happy to stay in unlit rooms? Oh, and all on different floors? Um.......No! There then followed lots of phonecalls to other TLs asking for advice, lots of complaining etc etc. Eventually we were found 3 rooms, one a disabled single(!), transferred all Mum and Dad's stuff to their new room, and then fought to get enough sheets, duvets, pillows, towels etc and got the kiddies in to bed about 11 o'clock. It was hopeless. There was more, but think that's enough to warrant a complaint, don't you??????

It really was a creepy place too. We suspect the girl on the desk is running some kind of rooms by the hour racket....and lots of shouting/banging in the night. Some 70th birthday celebration! We only went there as we all have dogs, and most hotels wont take them, but we wont be back!

hotcrossbunny · 19/11/2008 12:28

Hi Hippi, could you do it on a trial basis?

hippipotami · 19/11/2008 12:30

Oh no, that sounds like a nightmare

The lunchtime supervisor job is temporary, only until the summer holiday. I am thinking of applying (me and 47 other mums ) and if (and it is a big if with so much competition) then I could try to run it alongside invigilating just this once. And if I don't like it or it is too hectic, then I can drop it in the summer....

Argh, but do I really want it????

MaryAnnSingleton · 19/11/2008 13:04

Travelodge sounds dreadful - complain !!
Hippi - not sure what to advise really - I sense that your heart is saying no but you feel you should take it,or try for it... what you could do is apply, and then if it's fate you'll get it...how does that sound ?

OP posts:
hotcrossbunny · 20/11/2008 10:42

Morning Shouldn't be here, dh is working from home for the next couple of days, so should be looking busy

Hippi, I don't know what to advise. It really sounds like you don't want to take the job, but as MAS says, feel you should go for it. Um, the only thing I'd say is, if you do go for it, IMO school may then see you as 'only' aspiring to that type of work, and may not consider you for more involved roles within the school IYSWIM? But I may be waaaaay off the mark..... I know the money would come in very handy over here!

How are you doing MAS? Do your parents have a completion date yet? It's so exciting!

I'm off to Sing-a-long-a-Mamma Mia tonight Should be a laugh.

Right, off to tidy up.

MaryAnnSingleton · 20/11/2008 11:01

morning ! yes, that's a good point there hotcross - I think that your heart isn't in it hippi and you are battling with feeling that you should take it, so,my advice is to hold out for something better (not to denigrate the job of lunchtime supervisors)
Am waiting for dryer to finish then off to Sainsbury's..
Mum and dad move on 5th,2 weeks away !!
Have a fab time at Singalong-a-Mama Mia - sounds a hoot

OP posts:
hippipotami · 20/11/2008 14:44

Afternoon

Just popped in - did a fab morning's invigilating, the exam answer paper was printed wrong, (it's on the news ) so it was chaos, chaos, chaos!
Then popped into W to the library adn a mooch around the shops.

I think I may fill in the application form anyway, purely because the way things are financially I have to at least try

Argh!

Mama Mia sounds fun - have a fab time hotcross!!

MaryAnnSingleton · 21/11/2008 09:06

Morning - am off to have my contact lens check up in a mo...just discovered that it's a non-uniform day - eek - T in a total panic when J and F called for him- practically hyperventilating ! changed quickly and gave him a pound for whatever they're collecting for !
Have you done the form hippi ?

OP posts:
hippipotami · 21/11/2008 09:42

Hello Oh poor T, what a start to the day!!

No, I have not done the form yet. Yet I feel I should....

Having a day of chores today - have just made a cinnamon crunch cake for the weekend, need to prepare a lasagna ready to put in the oven after swimming tonight, need to phone Blubeckers to book a table for dh and E's birthday, need to do some paperwork (incl. application form ), laundry, dusting, hoovering, pack up swimming bag and go do Toe by Toe at the Junior School.

E is full of cold and has a sore throat, and sounds very croaky. She is singing with the Lower School choir at the Christmas Fete tomorrow - I hope she will be up for it!

Right, best go adn have a look at teh Flybabies thread - am relying on those ladies to help me get my house in order

Good luck at the optician, back later

MaryAnnSingleton · 21/11/2008 11:36

Poor croaky E - hope she feels better soon.
You sound very organised with lasagne and cinnamon crunch cake (can you give me recipe,if you have time- don't fret if too busy doing chores though ! - it sounds yum - btw we're having Hippi's Dutch soup this weekend !)
Am having new contact lenses and have to think about renewing my plan with the opticians, work out the cost effectiveness- argh !

OP posts:
hippipotami · 21/11/2008 13:43

Argh, had a phonecall an hour ago, O has receivd a bump to the head at school. Dh was home on his lunchbreak so went to collect him.
He is a bit pale, and a bit unsteady on his feet. But is chatty and wanted a snack, so can't be too bad.
He does have a huge egg on the back of his head and some grazing and little spots of blood.

So no Toe by Toe for me today (that is 3 weeks on teh run I have not gone ) and no swimming this afternoon either.
(blast, it is assessment for swimming, and whilst I don't think he would have moved up, there was always a tiny hope, but if he is not even there for assessing he definatly won't move up...)

MaryAnnSingleton · 21/11/2008 15:26

poor O ! if he's eating and chatty then sounds ok..poor lamb though
