We could build hundreds on our land if we but had the money - we spent it buying the land

LyraSilvertongue · 28/06/2008 15:13

Could you sell a bit of it to raise the cash? or get DH to build you a log cabin.

oggsfrog · 28/06/2008 15:27

Could possibly sell some in future but that would mean neighbours .
We are very isolated and there are no services to the land, and I like not having anybody nearby .
A log cabin would be good but we just haven't the money/time at the moment. Dh has built 2 stables so at least the ponies have homes [smeil]

LyraSilvertongue · 28/06/2008 15:33

DH has his priorities all wrong.

Berrie · 28/06/2008 16:02

Right, I've had a crafty nap and I'm ready to go.
Then tent was great and the campsite was set in a pine forest on the beach. There were lovely people in the neighbouring tents with similar age children and we had many drunken 'street parties.'
The weather was lovely with only a couple of rainy episodes.
We hired bikes, one with a trailor and as the island was covered with cycle tracks we did quite a bit of cycling every day, most frequently into the local market which was out of this world and also explains our lack of weightloss given the exercise.
Sigh, it was glorious and we didn't want to come home.

LyraSilvertongue · 28/06/2008 16:41

Sounds glorious Berrie
The worst part of holidays is coming home to reality.

oggsfrog · 28/06/2008 17:13

It sounds as if you had a wonderful time Berrie
What sort of things did you eat? What sort of foods did they sell at the market??

Will we get to see pics?

LyraSilvertongue · 28/06/2008 17:15

Yes, pics. And food.

Berrie · 28/06/2008 19:48

I tentatively suggest that the pictures are up...

Berrie · 28/06/2008 19:57

Ok.
So the market had an outdoor bit with touristy stuff like jewellery and bags and clothes then inside the market hall was the food.
There were cheese stall...groan. Very expensive actually but delicious. There were lovely fresh fruit and vegetables. You could tell that much of the salady stuff had come out of the ground that morning. There were sort of deli stalls with olives and ...er stuff that I didn't even know what it was. There were sausisson stalls, fresh meat and bakery stalls...groan. Lastly was the fabulous fish market. It was really busltly with the french with their baskets getting their fresh food every morning and the stall holders were great with us and our school french. ( I ordered 4 kg of french beans instead of a quarter of a kilo!)

We had croissants or brioche with freshly made coffee each morning (the tent was well equipped)
Lunch was usually baguette, cheese (groan) with fruit and maybe a cheeky beer!

In the evening we cooked fish or meat on the gas BBQ with more bread cheese, salad or vegetables...oh and wine wine wine...tee hee hee!

LyraSilvertongue · 28/06/2008 21:01

Lovely pics and it sounds fantastic Berrie. We may consider it for next year if you can recommend it. DP would kill to go camping for two weeks.
It wasn't too expensive was it? We'll have no money next year after buying the extra house.

Berrie · 28/06/2008 22:14

The flight was £300 for the four of us, the tent was £400 but that was out of season. As a teacher, I know that there isn't a problem with that. I think in peak season it wouldn't have been so nice. Il de Re is expensive however as it is a chic destination for rich Parisiens and the toll on the bridge to the island makes them able to charge higher prices.
It was just under 50 euros for the taxi to the isdland and 120 euros for the bike hire. We didn't eat oput as the prices were high. A mixture of the destinastion and the weak pound. But...twas great.

oggsfrog · 29/06/2008 11:04

It looks and sounds amazing , and you got good weather too .

ZebsRoomofHerOwn · 30/06/2008 08:57

Berrie, sounds like you've had a fab holiday. And Lyra, is that a definite on the house - when do you exchange? Well done you. And with a 75 foot garden, you can now keep chickens too...and pigs.... but watch out for badgers. One dug its way into our chicken run and went for it. . One was eviscerated, one had its head ripped off and one was blinded. The rest are still in shock and are down to laying only 3 a day.

Berrie · 30/06/2008 09:12

Yikes Zeb...horror on a Monday morning!

ZebsRoomofHerOwn · 30/06/2008 09:17

It was the middle of last week, around midnight. Woke DH up with a bit of a jolt! I didn't see any of it, fortunately.

Berrie · 30/06/2008 09:28

Why were you there?

ZebsRoomofHerOwn · 30/06/2008 13:36

I wasn't. I was just reporting back!

oggsfrog · 30/06/2008 19:37

Chicken carnage .
Thankfully we don't get badgers up here just foxes, although I'm thinking I'll be lucky not to lose any of my latest chicks to my own cats .

Feeling fat and fed up today. Dh is out and I want to watch Cold Comfort Farm. I bought it months ago and put it in one of those 'safe places' that are actually black holes in disguise

ZebsRoomofHerOwn · 01/07/2008 09:02

Is that the black hole where half of all my socks end up?

Also feeling fat - Atkins sort of starts today with the warm-up as it'll take me a couple of days to wean myself off coffee.

And I didn't get to interview for my boss's job. Unfortunately, as I lack the basic skills requirement of errr PR & marketing. Apparently important for her role.

oggsfrog · 01/07/2008 09:09

{sad] Aw, sorry about the job Zeb. You are enjoying your current one though aren't you? Will your boss be coming back after maternity leave - you got on well with her didn't you?

ZebsRoomofHerOwn · 01/07/2008 09:29

Oh yes - I didn't expect to get it anyway.

I think I'm just a bit unfocused right now as everything's up in the air workwise (Cornwall's public sector is a right mess and it won't be clear until next April exactly what's going on). Also personally of course, and I'm not certain where I'm going (in both the physical and deep metaphorical sense ).

Right, any recommendations of movies/tv to hire from the rental place?

Berrie · 01/07/2008 09:37

Sorry about that Zeb.
Apart from feeling fat Oggs do you not feel slimmer?

oggsfrog · 01/07/2008 10:02

Won't be much help on the film recommendations Zeb - last night I resorted to a remake of The Poseidon Adventure starring Rutger Hauer

Berrie. No, tbh I really don't feel much slimmer. It's this psychological barrier of 12st. Until I get below that I'm still losing/gaining what I've previously lost/gained and still have all the same clothes.
Dh says I look slimmer and doesn't want me to get too slim

ZebsRoomofHerOwn · 01/07/2008 13:23

Oooh, last night I saw the remake of the Invasion of the Bodysnatchers, but it was starring Daniel Craig, so it was definitely superior to the Poseidon Adventure.

Meanwhile, step away from the kitchen knives and sit down with a nice cup of cocoa to watch Cold Comfort Farm.
