Married name none. Maiden name, loads.

My son in law’s mom and my mom have the same name - first middle and surname.

I know sister in laws who have the same first middle and last name

None. There are four people in the country who have our surname and they all live in our house. There are others in England where DH is from and the USA but none where we live.

workisdull · 02/03/2025 07:05

None and having done a fair whack of genealogy, I've never come across anyone with the surnames going back to all 8 of great grandparents!

My great grandfather with my surname had 6 sisters so the family continuation of my name was limited from 100+ years back. I only know 2 other people now with my surname - my brother and my nephew so it'll likely die out. My kids have the exs surname though as we weren't married when they were born, their hospital tags have my surname on so for a short part of their lives they were "baby x"

Shubbypubby · 02/03/2025 09:16

None because it's a foreign surname. Common in its country of origin but not in the UK.

ThisPlumShark · 02/03/2025 14:10

Although my mum has met someone with her exact maiden name.

Maiden name none. I met someone once with the same surname but turns out that we were some kind of cousins. My paternal grandparents were both from very big families.

Married name, I’m assuming yes as I met a family with the same surname from a different part of the country. I don’t really know that side too well so can’t say for sure. Mind you technically I’m not related to his cousins, aunties etc.

Iloveeverycat · 02/03/2025 16:52

You might be related to them however distant.

Tooty78 · 02/03/2025 16:58

None, I have a very unusual English surname.

Tinseltuttifruitti · 02/03/2025 17:00

None. There's a much more common spelling and I've not even met any of them!

Purplecatshopaholic · 02/03/2025 17:04

My married name was very rare, we were related to every single bloomin one of them, lol

CarmelaBrunella · 02/03/2025 17:04

None. Applies to my original and my married surnames. Once someone on a flight approached me as he heard my name - he turned out to be a cousin!

dizzydizzydizzy · 02/03/2025 17:23

Literally hundreds.

To be fair, within my lifetime - and in my experience - it was very difficult for a child if they didn't have their father's name - there was a huge stigma to being illegitimate children of single mothers so I can understand why this happens. People didn't always have the luxury of avoiding 'sexist' practices in the past where it doesn't matter now.

Some reasonably common British surnames have disappeared since people with them emigrated to the US and are common there now but because people moved from rural villages to unhealthy towns and cities in 17/18th century Britain and did not continue to live long enough to produce offspring, they died out entirely in Britain.

Not making this up! Got it first hand from lectures and conversations with surname expert the late George Redmonds (who was the guy who did all the initial laborious work with telephone directories!)

My maiden name is Spanish and it's a name that is heard but not common. I live in Texas so I am more likely to meet others with the name.
I met someone with the name only two days ago.

As for my married name, it's a place name in the northwest of England and it's strange to see buses with it as a destination. However, I have never met another person with that surname, even in my husband's hometown.

romdowa · 02/03/2025 18:05

My maiden name is the most common surname in Ireland, so I've met a lot of people who share it. My married name is an old cornish name and very unusual, apparently if I ever meet another then they are related somehow to my husband.

Jon. It's a very unusual name.

Dustmylemonlies · 02/03/2025 19:06
  1. I have quite an unusual maiden name so was astonished when we moved into a village a couple of decades back and came across them!
Bigfellabamboo · 02/03/2025 19:07

My married name, 0. My maiden name, 1.

WhiteOrca · 02/03/2025 20:13

Quite a few! Then again it is one of the most common surnames (begins with an S.. can you guess?😄). Now I'm married and my surname is another common one!
