None.

However, my DP’s ex wife and I share the same maiden name.

I often wonder if I am distantly related to his children.

CoastalCalm · 01/03/2025 21:23

I went to school with someone with my exact full name , married name I’ve not met anyone but I have seen a couple on Facebook groups

Manzana · 01/03/2025 21:30

one, we both worked at the same place

BooksAndHooks · 01/03/2025 21:31

None, I don’t believe there are any people in the uk with my surname that are not related to DH.

If it's rare and originates from a small geographic area you could be.

I know married people who are very distantly related.

Nightmanagerfan · 01/03/2025 21:35

Absolutely loads. (Common name like Smith!)

None. I have a very rare surname.

Fiorenzsay · 01/03/2025 21:36

There was a woman with the same forename and surname as me, 3 doors away. I found out as the doctor mixed us up and starting chatting to me about my current prescription, which was hers. I corrected him and he insisted he was right but as I insisted he wasn't, he double checked. He was very embarrassed when he realised.

Never met her and never met anyone else with my surname. First name, a few, but not many.

theboffinsarecoming · 01/03/2025 21:37

Our surname is extremely common, and I have met other people with it, yes.

My grandmother's maiden surname on the other hand... everyone in the UK with that surname or its variants is distantly related to me.

ODFOx · 01/03/2025 21:37

Lots. It's a very common British name.
The only people with the name that I'm related to are 2 of my children.

CherryogDog · 01/03/2025 21:39

My married name isn't unusual but I've only met a few people called it.
My maiden name is unusual, I've only met 1 person, and it was her maiden name.

mewkins · 01/03/2025 21:42

Very unusual maiden name but met 3 other families with the same name - two through work and one through antenatal class.

Alwaystired23 · 01/03/2025 21:44

My madien name - none.

My married name-loads, it's a very common name.

I regret changing my name tbh. I wouldn't do it again.

CordeliaNaismithVorkosigan · 01/03/2025 21:46

None, but if I google it I find quite a few abroad - my father was an immigrant and it’s a common name elsewhere.

EducatingArti · 01/03/2025 21:47

My surname is more common in the USA and there it relates to 19C immigrants from Germany. It is very uncommon in the UK and my family are not related to the USA ones unless it is extremely far back. My family tree has been traced back to the 1600s and they were English at that point.
I've never met a non related person with my surname. I believe there may be one or two in Scotland, though whether we are actually related in generations past, I wouldn't know.

ohtowinthelottery · 01/03/2025 21:48

None. Back in the days when telephone directories were a thing, we were the only listing under our surname. There are a couple of areas of the country that have clusters of our surname, just not anywhere near where we live.

Workisntworking · 01/03/2025 21:48

Talking about thus just today. In my 50s and never met anyone with surname who I'm not related to.

But, today my teenager met someone with their surname. I'd have argued that her name is rarer so bonkers she's met someone already!

SlaveToAGoldenRetriever · 01/03/2025 21:49

Lots! It’s a very common one, sadly.

theboffinsarecoming · 01/03/2025 21:49

A friend of mine had extreme difficulty getting a mortgage some years ago and it turned out that someone else had the exact same first, middle and last name, and not only that, but the same date of birth as well. This person had been declared bankrupt, and my friend had a nightmare sorting out the mix-up.

Nottodaty · 01/03/2025 21:50

I have a very very uncommon first name and a not so common maiden surname. Around 25 years ago I moved and there was another person locally with the same first and surname! She worked for a relocation company who found short term lets for people working in the area. When I was phoning estate agency when moving everyone was so helpful…thinking I was her! I never met her.

Never met another person with my surname.

GreenMarigold · 01/03/2025 21:50

Nobody with my maiden name outside my family. I have never met anyone with my married name but have seen 2 come up in movie credits!

illiad · 01/03/2025 21:51

None - v.rare surname and anyone with it is related

LovelyDaaling · 01/03/2025 21:53

I met someone with exactly the same name as me, even our middle name was the same. And I met someone else with the same first name and surname and her son had the same name as my son, even down to the less common way of spelling it.

Skandar · 01/03/2025 21:55

A few. I know a couple of people with the same maiden name as me, and a few with the same married surname. One in fact was my brother's now ex wife, who had the same maiden name as my married name! We got married the same year and so swapped surnames!

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 01/03/2025 21:57

Very few.
At secondary school we were seated alphabetically, and I had to sit next to a boy with the exact same first and last name as my brother - but we weren't related at all. The surname was moderately well known locally.
The only person we've both met with the same surname as DH, but not related to him, turned out to be a fraudster who 'borrowed' our address for nefarious purposes!
