What is the best piece of advice you were ever told?

OP posts:

Perfectionism is the enemy of adequacy.

I have the tendency to get stuck and do nothing if I'm not sure of the best way forward. This advice reminda me that doing nothing is a choice and often not a good one, which lowers the stakes and allows me to choose from the imperfect options available. It has paid off so many times in big and small ways.

Keep your blood sugar low and keep moving

Love many
Trust few
Always paddle your own canoe.

Start paying into a pension as soon as you can.
Thanks Ddad.👍

Always be comfortable in your own skin because wearing someone else's is illegal.

“You think you can win arguments by having the right answer. You can’t. You win arguments by making people want to agree with you”.

advice from a sales director boss many years ago and applicable in so many circumstances.

I feel like mine is the flip side of the same coin!

Don't believe or trust people just because they're speaking confidently - a lot of people have realised they get people on side just by talking confidently even if they have no idea what they're on about (and I say that with great confidence!)

“Enrol on the pension scheme, it’s free money”(21 years old in 1999, advice from a 45 year old work colleague). Thanks Neil!

This is good!
Wish someone had told me that in 2009 when I took money out of my pension (first 1 year job contract) to go travelling! Had a great time and got to see some amazing places. But, I should have worked for longer and saved not taken the pension money!

As a lawyer: this one is really, really good. Reading it made a lot of loose pieces of my own thoughts fall into place just now.

The problem with worrying is that nobody worries on time. You either worry too early, or too late.

Nothatgingerpirate · 20/12/2024 10:21

One of the best - don't hesitate to put yourself first, because nobody else would do this for you, including your "loved ones".
By and large, people will let you do as much as you are willing to do for them, gnawing at you (not literally) and taking your precious time and energy.
Foot down, one life etc.
Couldn't be more true, actual advice received from a man. Wow for him wanting to share. 😐

@Sadtosaythis Same here enrol on the pension scheme, I was 21 and Gwen was about 50 and insisted. I saw her at a work reunion a couple of years ago and she is in her seventies. I was delighted I got the chance to thank her.

ItWasntMyFault · 20/12/2024 10:29

Don't worry about things you can't change.

Don't tell anyone your plans and ambitions.

Just get on with it all quietly.

Not everyone wishes you well and some like to see you fail.

And even when you do succeed, no need to broadcast it.

Ditto with Finances . Keep them to yourself . People are jealous and some will try and take you down . I always let people think I'm just keeping my head above water . I've seen people in tears because they have had their hours cut at work because they are seen as bringing able to take the hit because they "have money ."

Don't be afraid to speak out.

90% of the problems that are posted on here could be avoided if the poster had simply said something.

Spot on , nail on head . Often people will test your boundaries in small ways

If you want to poison someone with cyanide, hide it in something that tastes of almonds

Godfreydahling · 20/12/2024 10:37

Never argue with stupid people. They will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

welcometomynightmare · 20/12/2024 10:39

When in a group of people talking,it's better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid, rather than opening it and confirming it.😯

CommunistOrca · 20/12/2024 10:57

You can never be too kind or too fair.

Itslookinglikeabeautifulday · 20/12/2024 10:58

If it doesn't matter in a year's time then it doesn't matter.

Also,
The race is long and in the end, it's only with yourself - from Baz Luhrmann's song Everybody's Free (To Wear Sunscreen), which has quite a lot of other good snippets.

MoralOrLegal · 20/12/2024 11:00

If you don't know what to do, think how you'd advise a friend in your situation.

Ladamesansmerci · 20/12/2024 11:01

The only person whose behaviour you can control is yours.

The only person who will truly love you unconditionally is yourself. Learn to radically accept yourself.

heartsinvisiblefury · 20/12/2024 11:02

Illinoise · 19/12/2024 23:01

Don’t worry about the opinions of people you wouldn’t take advice from. Really made me give far less of a crap what people think!

This is such a good one !

MoralOrLegal · 20/12/2024 11:06

On the whole, people don't think about you or talk about you.

Tandmarmite · 20/12/2024 11:10

In times of stress, ask yourself "does it really matter?"
