So another thread got me thinking... how often do you wash your clothes??

I'll go first -

Knickers and socks - one wear
Bras - maybe 2/3 wears (sports bra 1 wear)
Tops - 1 or 2 wears
Jumpers - maybe 3 wears
Trousers - maybe 2 wears
Pjs - 2 wears

Just wondering how I compare to others!

I re-wear everything until it's either stained or smells. Apart from knickers/panties.

ItGhoul · 25/11/2024 10:27

Wool is different to other clothes as it is naturally antibacterial

There's some evidence to suggest that some bacteria survive less well on wool than they do on, eg, cotton, but it's a massive stretch to say that 'wool is antibacterial'.

Knickers and socks - one wear
Bras - dunno, probably about a week
Tops - one to three wears, probably
Jumpers - Assuming they look/smell OK, about four or five wears
Trousers - Same as jumpers. But I mostly wear jeans, which I wash pretty much only when they're visibly dirty.
PJs - about four or five wears, but I don't wear them in bed, just for relaxing in the evenings

Gamerlady · 25/11/2024 10:53

I wear knickers and socks once
I wear a bra for a whole week , maybe longer if it doesn't smell.
Tops, jumpers, pjs , and jeans are worn until they smell or have stains . So, they last longer.
My work clothes last a whole week.
There's no need to be washing clothes daily in winter , in summer, i get it
I don't see the point of all that washing after wearing it once.

KitsyWitsy · 25/11/2024 11:47

I am really shocked people are wearing their bras for up to a week! Why?

Why not? (As long as they don't smell)

Chloe42 · 25/11/2024 12:16

Pants and socks one wear.everything else until I drop something down it or it doesn't smell fresh on the sniff test.
Mumsnet is awash (ba-boom) with people washing everything including themselves ridiculously often. I don't know if you are all sweating excessively or something but it's so ott.

Because they’re on your skin and under your boobs?

And?

KitsyWitsy · 25/11/2024 12:54

It’s not obvious? Sweat!

Chattenoire · 25/11/2024 12:56

KitsyWitsy · 25/11/2024 12:54

It’s not obvious? Sweat!

It's the same for all types of clothes. As long as they're dry next time you wear them, it's genuinely no issue.

Sweat in itself isn't bad, is that humidity that causes issues thus why they need to be dry.

I say this as someone with flexural psoriasis

KitsyWitsy · 25/11/2024 13:00

I dont think it is. The underneath of your bra is trapped and is just soaking up sweat. I am large busted so maybe it’s worse for me. I do wear them a couple of days in winter but I couldn’t do longer than that. In summer, definitely only one day.

Dosat · 25/11/2024 13:02

Bra about a week, I don’t have enough to wash daily. T-shirt, bra, underwear daily, trousers and hoodies normally last about a week.

ScupperedbytheSea · 25/11/2024 13:07

Threads like these always make me feel like a real filthy mare.
Kickers one wear. Bras definitely a few wears unless it's super hot and I'm sweating.
Tops next to skin, normally one as I do sweat under my arms.
Everything else that hadn't been in direct skin contact, ie sweaters, cardis, jeans, trousers - as long as I can. Tbh, I'm more likely to spill something that means they go in the was before they fail the sniff test.

CointreauVersial · 25/11/2024 13:07

I get a few days out of a bra before washing. Obviously if it's a really hot day and it actually gets sweaty (very rare) then it would go straight in the wash. But I don't sweat much.

Socks, knickers - 1 day only.

Everything else - if it starts to whiff, or gets stained/grubby.

People wash clothes too often.

IBlameTheDog · 25/11/2024 13:13

Anything that touches my skin, once.

Jumpers, hoodies etc twice. Maybe 3 at the most.

CompCity · 25/11/2024 13:25

I was about to say
Evening dress - a decade
Coats - surprisingly many years too
Trousers - start off smart, get moved to 'shopping' then finally gardening so 4 years?

pixie1345 · 25/11/2024 13:30

underwear x2
trousers-x4
hoodies/ jumpers x4
t shirt x3.

i dont sweat . feel the cold very easily and only put the heating on for a couple of hours every night!

PTSDBarbiegirl · 25/11/2024 13:30

Underwear changed twice a day and washed after each use.

Woollen items- never, unless it’s with a sponge by hand. Line hung to air.

Trousers, tops any other work clothes on hot-wash after one use, due to germs in work environment.

Expensive dresses, trousers & tops as little as possible.

2 of my relatives were tailors, dressmakers and swore by never washing black clothes!

redalex261 · 25/11/2024 13:53

Pants, socks, tights (urgh!) one wear.

Bras - 3 wears (washing bras all the time ruins them elastic ends up shagged - mine are a fortune and need cool handwash to last longer)

Leggings and t-shirts/vest tops - one wear

Hoodies, cardis - as many as possible until cuffs are grubby or food spill - maybe 4 times

Jeans - 2/3 times

Dresses - depends on fabric 1/2, unless quality wool ones - pressed and aired.

Puffa coats - once or twice during season.

PJs - every wear if kept on in bed - sweaty sleeper, if just to lounge then twice.

Everything else - sniff test.

I love laundry!

HeadJudgeShirley · 25/11/2024 14:00

It depends what it's for. Clothes I'd wear outside, including bra and pants, would be one wear only. The exception to that would be denim, which I'll wear until I don't like the feel of it.

For bumming around the house, I'm quite happy to raid the laundry bin for a comfortable jumper and bra, if they pass a sniff test. As long as I'm not freshly out of the shower, I don't mind wearing things I've already worn a few times.

I have the same problem. The summer is loathsome for sweaty tits.

CatherineCawoodsbestie · 25/11/2024 19:00

I am really scuzzy compared to lots of you!

Pants and socks - one wear
Gym gear - one wear
Bras - 4 /5 - but I WFH a lot and only wear them out of the house so it's not all the time.
Tights - one wear.

Everything else is based on visual cleanliness and a sniff test! It was much more frequent when the kids were little. Generally speaking - tops and nighties 2-3 wears, dresses 3-4 wears, trousers can be ages, particularly if loose or jeans. Jumpers can we weeks! I do wear long sleeve vests in the winter a lot which are washed more frequently.

I wear lounge wear in the house which probably does get washed a little more.

I rehang clothes and also spot clean if possible. I'm not keen on doing laundry! 😄

Mind you, my grandfather, born during the First World War, would proudly get out his clean boxers and string vest every Sunday, to chance into after his weekly bath! And the ones he'd been wearing since the previous Sunday went in the wash. I think this was generational though - he used to wash his bits twice every day, using the bidet, soap and flannel!

MyLemonWriter · 15/01/2025 13:53

Don't wash nearly as much as lots of you, basically only when things start to smell. So most items last a week or so
