How long do you wear clothes?

So another thread got me thinking... how often do you wash your clothes??

I'll go first -

Knickers and socks - one wear
Bras - maybe 2/3 wears (sports bra 1 wear)
Tops - 1 or 2 wears
Jumpers - maybe 3 wears
Trousers - maybe 2 wears
Pjs - 2 wears

Just wondering how I compare to others!

How long do you wear clothes?

If I'm out and about, always.

RedRiverShore5 · 24/11/2024 19:29

Pretty much the same as OP, though woollens I leave as long as possible and trousers 3 or 4 wears

Bras are fairly cheap M&S so just go in the machine so 2 wears, if I had to wear more expensive bras that would probably be different.

OhBabyItsWindyOutside · 24/11/2024 19:51

I work from home, so have dramatically increased the length of time I wear clothes for on home clothes

Winter:
Pants - 1 wear
Socks - 1/2 wears (2 if not worn with shoes and only for a few hours on the day before)
Tops - 5 wears
Dresses - 5 wears
Jumpers - 5 wears
Bras 5-7 wears
Jeans - 14 wears
Pjs - 7 wears

If I go out, the clothes I have on are on their first or second day of wear only.

In the summer, everything gets washed after fewer washes due to sweat. I am generally very inactive so this also contributes to being able to wear things longer - if I was out and about, working up any sort of sweat, I'd be washing more.

I am conscious this is unusually long and but my mum who I see every other day would DEFINITELY tell me if I had any sort of smell as she can't help criticise anything like that.

DrunkTinkerbell40s · 24/11/2024 08:57

As in you think people are washing them after one wear? Or you think people are wear in them longer than that??

A friend told me she wears her bras for weeks!!

I wear mine around a week!

Wool is different to other clothes as it is naturally antibacterial. I'm similar to the OP but jumpers and trousers might go more or less depending on how dirty they are. I think sniff test is fine for anything not directly touching your skin!

Yes, this.

I'd never heard of wearing a bra more than once until I joined mn. I've always counted bras as underwear.

How many bras do you own????? At around 35plus a go I couldn't possibly own enough.
2-4 wears, but less if its been an extra sweaty day eg exercising.
edit OK, pretty sure I lied in defence of the 'only wear anything once' group 😅. In winter, without anything dramatic happening exercise wise, probably 4-7days, with 7 being unlikely.
But I don't wash by days, I wash by stiff test. If it is dry and still smells like washing and not skin its fine. If it smells I change it.
Pants and socks are once only.
Tops fresh on if I'm going out (by that I mean anywhere out the house near other people), might do 2 or 3 days in winter at home. If I've been running about a lot then might change twice a day! I go on the cleanliness of the clothes, not the time.

KitsyWitsy · 24/11/2024 20:00

I wear my bras once or twice. They are also expensive and I use the wool/lingerie cycle on my machine. I have about 20 or so.

knickers are clean on in the morning and before bed.

clean tights everyday.

Everything else I might wear a few times if it’s not seen much action. I don’t tend to do much in my clothes so they don’t really get dirty or sweaty and repeated washing isn’t good for clothes.

Pyjamas changed every couple of days or so.

rainbowbee · 24/11/2024 20:06

Socks, tights and knickers- one wear.
Sports clothes- one wear.
Camis and t-shirts- two to three wears.
Work blouses, skirts and trousers- around three wears depending. (I just sit in an office).
Good jumpers and dresses- almost never, just aired.
Jeans- as needed.
Towels- probably twice a week depending.

Clothing lasts a lot longer if you wash it less. Unless it smells or has stains on it you can spot clean a lot of things and/or air them and it is better for the planet as well.

I'm not in the UK, and the message that we should be washing our clothes less is drummed into us on TV. I can't believe (well, yes I can - this is MN!) how often so many wash things after just one wear (knickers and socks excepted).

LaurieFairyCake · 24/11/2024 20:19

Bra/pants/socks every day (wear the bra in bed though so it's worn 24 hours)

Pj's change every day (menopause)

Thin cotton tops every day

Cashmere and wool jumpers - wear about 20 times at least

Jeans, trousers, skirts - at least 10 days

Hello113 · 24/11/2024 08:48

I do not believe that everyone is washing a bra after 2 wears!

Me neither !
I must be filthy I wear them for a week 😬

Fireworknight · 24/11/2024 21:58

Bras - a week - I don’t sweat much
pants - I day
socks - 1-2 days
tops 2-3 days
trousers - 2-3 days
pjs - a week,
dresses 2-3 days
jumpers - 2-7 days

However, I swop between dog-walking clothes, work clothes, popping to shop clothes , slouchy clothes etc so some clothes may get repeated use, but aren’t worn all day.

Hate to think how much washing some people have!

CandyCane457 · 24/11/2024 22:25

Every single thing gets washed after one wear, apart from bras, I wear them twice before washing.

MrsCatE · 25/11/2024 02:21

@NormalAuntFanny that makes sense. I understand the real wool has a lot of lanolin / natural oils to prevent being soaked in onboard sea conditions! Plus you'll obviously be wearing a long sleeved T Shirt or a Thermal underneath.

EveningSpread · 25/11/2024 02:50

Wow I’m really in the minority here.

Pants: one wear. Everything else: when it’s dirty. Could be one wear. More likely many. It just goes back in the wardrobe unless it smells less than ideal or has dirt on it, so I don’t register how many wears things get.

JustDoYou · 25/11/2024 02:54

Depends on the season. In the winter where I do not perspire, everything other than knickers gets a few wears. In summer it’s one wear.

familyissues12345 · 25/11/2024 09:50

Knickers - once
Socks - once
Bras - 2-3 days
PJs - twice
T-shirts/shirts - once
Jumpers - once or twice
Jeans - don't really count up, but 4-5 times?

BettyBardMacDonald · 25/11/2024 09:58

Hello113 · 24/11/2024 08:48

I do not believe that everyone is washing a bra after 2 wears!

I do.

Mine are the Eloni Matilda and mostly mesh. Spray them until saturated with diluted liquid lingerie soap, let sit for 15 minutes and rinse while I shower. They dry in a matter of hours.

We all sweat under our breasts. Why wouldn't we wash our bras daily. It takes three minutes.

BettyBardMacDonald · 25/11/2024 10:03

GoodIsGoodEnough · 24/11/2024 17:58

How many bras do people own?!
How are you washing them if wearing only once?!
So many questions and I am feeling grubby!

I own three good ones plus 10 or so cotton knit unstructured bras to wear at night (my breasts are too big to be unfettered).

Hand wash one daytime bra per day. It's no trouble, The cheap leisure bras go in the wash loads.

BettyBardMacDonald · 25/11/2024 10:04

isitsnowingyett · 24/11/2024 18:04

I wear nighties of various kinds and I have a fresh one every day.

Me too.

TubularBeIIs · 25/11/2024 10:08

Same as you OP except I wear nightshirts rather than pyjamas so don't think I'd wear pyjamas more than one night (pants bit!).

I do wear jumpers much longer as I always have a washable layer under them.

TubularBeIIs · 25/11/2024 10:10

Why does anyone have to wash a skirt after 2 wears (unless you are sitting in public transport wearing it)
