Rosa, I hope you all get a better night

Brangelina · 28/02/2008 22:29

Hello everybody, I haven't been killed off by my cold, just had nonna here plus lots of vet visits for my poorly puss. Rosa, nonna's the "English" one even though she's Italian, but I make her speak English with DD so at least there's input from someone else. I have to resist the temptation to correct some of her pronounciation though, she's never got the hang of "th", even after 40 odd years of speaking English. The odd thing is, when she speaks Italian she now has an English accent.

Poor you lot with sick littlies (and Hot with sick self), so far mine hasn't succumbed to the lergy (lurgy? sp? gah!) that has decimated the numbers at her nursery and I hope it stays that way as were going to the lake to see nonna on Saturday, then Sunday nonna's babysitting because DP and I are going to the Cure concert. He's terribly excited but I'm neither here nor there tbh. At least we're going out and maybe I'll dress up all 80s goth for the occasion. If I can be bothered, which doesn't look likely atm.

Rosa, I'm no expert re uti's but when the pediatra was insistent that DD had one a year or so ago, she advised me to go out and buy a Combitest, which are just sticks with different colour strips you dip in the wee and they give you an idea whether there is an infection in course or not (also test for things like protein, glucose etc. IIRC). It costs about 16 euros I think, but you get loads of sticks and it's well worth the money if only to cut out unnecessary trips to the paed. Bit of a nightmare with a nappy (you have to get this bag thing to go in the nappy) but now very easy with a potty.

Now, I know it's late and my head is full of snot, but have I understood correctly, that you can get some English TV on Italian Sky???? Without having to reprogramme the satellite dish (or whatever it is you have to do)? Or am I being really thick?

TantiK · 29/02/2008 07:25

Morning

Brangelina - with Italian sky you can change the language of many of the programmes to be English, mostly with the American sitcoms or dramas (House, Desperate Housewives) although I have also been watching House of Tiny Tearaways which you can also put into English. BBC Prime is totally in English and Eastenders is going to be on everyday from next week (if that is what you like). You can also change the language on the film channels to be English - which is great. I am really pleased with it, but feel very guilty that I now don't often watch TV in Italian language - which would really help to improve my Italian. We signed up for the deal where you pay ?15 each month for the first 3 months, then you choose your package (which invariably will cost double this) - but personally I think it is worth the money just to be able to not watch dubbed programmes.

Hope all babies have woken up feeling better. I have a busy day of cleaning the house before my parents arrive tomorrow. Boo.

gio71 · 29/02/2008 07:35

Morning, hope all sick people are feeling better.
Brangelina, Italian Sky is SO worth it. You get a few English channels -BBC Prime which has home and garden shows, sit- coms,Eastenders (banned in our house by DP who finds it beyond comprehension that anyone can watch a soap opera that is so removed from "Beautiful", dramas (just starting Life on Mars AFTER I just bought the box set , you've got vile sky news, BBC world, CNN. Plus you get an option to select original language on loads of stations- all movies, all the fox channels (Will & Grace, 24 and (don't tell anyone but current favourite to watch on a lazy afternoon is Murder She Wrote ), then Jimmy and Hallmark -loads of dramas and crappy telly, Cult (The Sopranos)plus the History, Discovery channels. Oh and Jim Jam for DS so he can watch the Tweenies and The Wiggles in original language.
Just realised this post looks like either (a) I work for Sky (nope) or (b)we are a house of telly addicts. Neither true, hardly get chance to watch telly but nice to know if I want an hour of garden invaders and location location location that I can have it

gio71 · 29/02/2008 07:36

obviously we like our English telly in Rome

gio71 · 29/02/2008 07:38

let us know wht the Cure concerts like Brangelina, I wanted to go - they're in Rome tonight but DP in Milano for work and gets back at stupid o'clock

hotHELL · 29/02/2008 09:43

Robert Smith must be at least 50, no?
HOpe all the kids are better....no fun!

Brangelina · 29/02/2008 10:31

Lol, I used to like Murder She Wrote too. Thanks for all that info Gio and TantiK, tis most interesting, particularly the BBC Prime stuff. No doubt my relatives would be glad about not having to miss Eastenders while they're over. I'm not too worried about watching dubbed programmes in English - I'm afraid I'm a bit of a saddo and actually prefer some things dubbed in Italian, as they often choose better voices (can't stand that nasal twang Hugh Laurie uses in House), plus even more sadly I'm noticing I find things harder to follow in English (having to rewind my DVDs at times). However, I'm very keen for DD to see CBeebies, if only to save me from buying mountains of DVDs. Is it on in the evenings too? Is it SkyPlus, can you record stuff?

Sorry, so many questions....

Hot, yes Robert Smith is now ancient, I saw him in an interview recently and he's gone all baggy in the face and has a bit of a wrinkly mouth, not good as a lipstick base. Apparently the concert is going to be memorable, according to DP, as they won't be playing live again after this tour, or so it is surmised. Just hope this cold goes before Sunday. I'm going to have to make my famous zuppa di cipolle, aglio e peperoncino tonight methinks.

Rosa · 29/02/2008 12:25

Oh Brang go on dress black spike your hair and make sure you smear your lipstick. If he sings Lovecats have a wiggle for me
DD bad night again and would you believe it her doc is on holiday ( he comes to the house for free if paitent is his)so the only other that comes to the house is a sort of doc in pensione. So he came - its damp and not taking dd out with 38.5 febbre / battuta , whinging , coughing . and an excellent visit and Euro 70 later dd is still recovering ..No mummy no mummy that man so she has picked at a bit of cheese and tomato and eaten a jam biscuit so thats postive. She has no infection but we have to watch out if anything gets worse and log her temps. He smelt her nappy ( nice) and said seems ok and she has stopped complaining so I guess that could be ok . I know the strips and think will get some just in case.
I have gparents coming on Sunday as well and room needs to be found then cleaned !
Brang you can record off Sky but ours is the old version so you need to nmake sure decoder is on that channel and you have to watch boring Mediaset or whatever. I video Eastenders as it is banned in my house and watch it in blocks like 4 hrs !!! when dd in bed and dh out !
Aerosol time for dd ....

OP posts:
Brangelina · 29/02/2008 13:56

Lol at smelling the nappy! But then don't all dispos smell of the gel stuff in them and not the wee? I could never tell if DD had weed if she had one on, but then maybe I used them too infrequently to get used to the subtle changes in aroma.

I shall wiggle at Lovecats for you, I actually have a special little dance I used to do to that. Not sure I'd have the courage to roll it out in my now ancient-and-should-be-wiser state.

I hope your DD is well soon. It is taxing for everyone when they're poorly, isn't it. Poor little mite.

francagoestohollywood · 29/02/2008 16:10

Ciao, have had a very busy day... shopping... . The dc were happily sent to nursery anbd I went to IKEA with my mum, where I bought a magnetic easel and then to zara home, where I bought a quilt for dd's single bed, cause I don't have any "mezza stagione" bedding (it was duvet all yr round in Exeter).
so, I'm very pleased, but feel obviously guilty, also becuase I should start to work. as I have promised a friend doing some research work for a book.
Rosa, I hope your dd recovers asap. Lol at smelling the nappies, only Italian paediatricians!
Yes, I'm of your sky abbonamenti, have to summon up the courage to do this as well.

Rosa · 29/02/2008 16:58

She had just peed so he grabbed it quick - I think it was the sheer anger at somebody she did not know prodding her naked ..you can understand her. at Ikea wanted to go to get toy storage thing so nonno could put it up when he comes he would do it in 10 seconds we would take triple that ! But not managed it. Like the sound of magnetic easel our fridge is full of magnets which she loves. Good feeling when you have a positive shopping day. Se non ci sentiamo buon weekend a tutti

francagoestohollywood · 29/02/2008 18:46

Everytime we go to ikea I lust after the TROFAST toy storage, but we have no space for it... dh's got very good at putting up Billys, he managed for in just 2 hrs... .
Hope dd will be much better tomorrow. ciao!

Rosa · 01/03/2008 09:11

Thats the one we want ( with pink and green buckets) THought about getting the step up kind of one so can put books on the top ..Am going to move a bookcase and my theory is that her toys wil go in that instead of boxes on the floor..But seeing as we havn't make it to Ikea then its still a thought. DD temp down a bit but not gone but has a horrible cough terrible night sleep for all concerned ( its a bast**d virus )and g parents arrive domani and I have yet to sort out the room ..Oh well they will understand.

ciao to you all, gemma and tatnik welcome... great the more the merrier!!!!

PMSL at "DP who finds it beyond comprehension that anyone can watch a soap opera that is so removed from "Beautiful" so so true!!! my brother saya the same.

went for scan today... evil child wouldnòt turn her face so no pics.

HELP.. is any of you RH negative? if so what's the procedure in italy? I'll miss the 34 week injection as I'm here and trying to have it done here seemsa bit complicated because it's not done the same way etc etc.

Franca I have a soft spot for grignani as well. I liked jovanotti's song "a te" as well. at admitting to been sucked in watching s remo when forst day I was ranting at how crappy it was!!!!!

I miss daily chat but no comp yet at home as bro moved out.

gemma where in north london are you?

house is preceeding all right, might have to stay here another week or so though. poor dh is devastated because dd refuses to speak to him on the phone: women can be cruel!!

hotHELL · 01/03/2008 11:06

ciao pippi!
sorry know nothing about the rh negative thing.
can you bribe your dd and say that after speaking to daddy on the phone she can have a chocolate?
you are going to end up giving up birth in italy at this rate!!!
i am getting bigger and bigger, quite scary, apparently as long as i don't hit 90kg I am fine.
have just bullied dp to take ds out to the pool, he never spontaneously does anything outside with him, i always have to tell him to do it, and of course he then gets pissed off because i am bossying him around, and he does the opposite of what i tell him to do. gha! he does spend time doing things at home with him, but i want them out!!!!!!

francagoestohollywood · 01/03/2008 12:52

"DP who finds it beyond comprehension that anyone can watch a soap opera that is so removed from "Beautiful", yes, it made me laugh as well ! I tried to make the case of American soap operas (or even better south ameerican telenovelas) when I was doing the MA in tv studies, but to no avail
Hothell, dh is passive as well re what to do with the dc. He always expects me to organise activities, playdates, whatever. grrrr . So this morning I went with dd to the market, it's amazing ! I bought lots of delicacies and I spent ???! I also discovered a great bakery. We left the "men" at home playing lady oscar, tie'!
Pippi, tell your dh that it's absolutely normal for them to refuse to talk on the phone, they get overwhelmed with emotions, they start to enjoy it after 3 and a half if I remember well. Also they are often too busy and can't even "imagine" to get interrupted even for a few secs.
Sorry don't know anything re rhesus neg, why don't you ring your english mw, maybe you can have the jab later?
send pics of the renovation!
rosa, I hope you can get some rest. I'm sure the grandparents will understand

francagoestohollywood · 01/03/2008 12:54

why are there ??? instead of the simbolo dell'euro??

Rosa · 01/03/2008 13:28

I am O neg but never had any jabs at 34 weeks . Had one after CVS and then when I gave birth blood tests monthly when pg ans 2 pretty soon after birth checking all was ok . DD is +
Guess what dh and I are going down with dd bug ---HURRAH !

francagoestohollywood · 01/03/2008 13:42

Oh no! If it's your parents who are coming to visit from the UK ask them to bring you "contac 12 hrs relief", I think it works far better than zerinol!

hotHELL · 01/03/2008 18:06

very at your local market, mmmm.
talking of telenovelas i loved la schiava isaura and Dancing Days. I don't get Easternders either! soooo depressing.

DelGirl · 01/03/2008 18:20
