Hi..

Just wondered what people's views were on Ulrika / her book / her date rape allegations??

I personally am not that interested in her life but wonder why she wants to reveal all!!

I can't believe that it could be John Leslie. Wasn't Ulrika on GMTV yesterday, if so she would have been talking about the rape in front of him.
I'm confused

futurity · 22/10/2002 17:47

he's not on GMTV..he's on this morning

have a look at this and note the way they make a point of saying who presents This Morning!

futurity · 22/10/2002 17:49

she said in interview that she had made every effort to disguise his name in the book hence why she may have referred to dating him?

Lynne33 · 22/10/2002 17:53

Sobernow - Why was Friends Re-United closed down?

karenanne · 22/10/2002 17:54

there was a very interesting bit on radio 2 this lunchtime backing Ulrikat, saying british law is so anti-women making allegations that something like 6-9% of cases result in a conviction and that in the USA they have special sex prosecutors who deal with cases and they get a much higher rate of convictions. They also slammed the press saying that just becuase a chap is well-dressed, has a job and knows the women he can't be a rapist. The comment was that only sure conviction was a rape of a young (under 16) virignal girl who was dragged off the street by a masked hooded rapist.

helenmc · 22/10/2002 18:32

also forgot to mention the rapist in Ulrika's case has been KNOWN to rape a number of other women.

kkgirl · 22/10/2002 18:36

Not sure it was rape in one of the other cases it was sexual assault

Clarinet60 · 22/10/2002 18:47

oooooh, this is so excitingly gossipy!!
Well I never, who'd have thought it, eh?
Can't wait to see if it does all come out. I don't see how she can avoid going the whole hog now - the cat is out of the bag. And if it's the wrong cat, then she'll almost have to name the right one in order to lift the cloud from jl.
ooooooooooh!!!!!!!!!

jessi · 22/10/2002 18:53

I don't understand though! I just read the link and it says Max Clifford was on This Morning yesterday talking about this man. Surely thats too weird if it is JL?

kkgirl · 22/10/2002 18:55

Its all too crazy really, I can't believe it could be John Leslie, but I'm sure all will be revealed soon, but I don't think Ulrika is going to say any more about it.

ellasmum · 22/10/2002 19:07

Oh my God - I log off for a few hours and come back to scandal and intrigue - hurray!!!

Can't believe it of JL - am more shocked about the info that he is known to have raped others - how did I not know about this???

I have seen him hanging around outside a local nightclub seedily chatting up young girls (can I get sued for saying that??).

OP posts:
megg · 22/10/2002 19:36

Personally I think if she wasn't prepared to name the person (she must have known how much scandal etc it would cause) then she either shouldn't have mentioned it or just said it was an ordinary joe. Whether it turns out to be John Leslie or not its ruined his career just by the smoke. Surely if he's done it to other people then it would have come out by now? Have to say that Ulrika certainly came out a winner with the Sven thing. The media keeps saying that the Italian won (sorry really can't remember her name but its the one with make up problems) but its not exactly a prize I'd like - a man who cheats on an already married woman then cheats on her with Ulrika and possibly one other. If the Italian is stupid enough to keep him after he's humiliated her publicly then good luck to her. For a woman who was a bit of a looker in her day Ulrika has terrible taste in men.

kkgirl · 22/10/2002 20:05

I'm amazed that Ulrika is only in her early 30's. She is looking very gaunt and haggard these days

Dixie · 22/10/2002 20:35

i can't believe its John leslie..they did do an interview together on this morning all about it...and he is normally a bit of a sqirmer when he's embrassed and he was fine. She also said she's had run ins with him & avoided talking to him...so she'd hardly do an interview with him...surely.....i have my own theory who it is but mine is just a guess....no evidence wot so ever

Chinchilla · 22/10/2002 20:37

Surely if she spent 4 days in hospital after the attack, they would have some record of her injuries. This would back her allegations up to a certain extent wouldn't it?

I had heard that JL was a bit of a 'swordsman', but I can't believe that he is the type to do this. Also, as someone already mentionned, that newspaper story said that Max Clifford was on the programme talking about the story with Fern and JL. Surely they wouldn't have put JL through the embarrassment of that?

I don't dislike Ulrika at all, but I think that if she didn't have the courage to report the attack at the time, for whatever reason, she should not have given any details of the man involved. It would now be a case of his word against hers, as there would be no forensic proof. What good does that do, unless he does this again, and the new victim has the courage to report it. I don't think that she has done herself any favours in the popularity stakes with this, and also selling her Sven story to the papers.

Willow2 · 22/10/2002 20:59

Wasn't going to add to this conversation... but couldn't resist it. Have had the displeasure of working with the woman on several occasions and she was a right little madam, deeply unlikeable and topped my "celebs I'd least like to work with again" league - an opinion voiced by others who had met her in similar circumstances. This was relatively early on in her career - weather girl/Edward era and then just as Gladiators was launching - so maybe she's got better with age and fame.

Personal opinion aside, I find all these "god hasn't my life been awful and let me tell you something even more awful now I'm trying to flog a book" characters really desperate. It's all a bit Edwina Currie for my liking - the only difference is Ulrika's better looking.

Re the rape - agree that anyone has a right to report rape, however long ago it happened, but this is very different. She didn't pop down to the police station she wrote a book. Yes, she's perfectly entitled to mention what happened to her and I know that the "whodunnit" aspect isn't of her immediate making, but it must have been blatantly obvious to all but the most stupid that writing about it would result in the current media frenzy and that names would be put in the frame. So if it isn't JL she should be prepared to stand up and say so - and if it is she should be prepared to back her claims up in court if needs be. Rape is a terrible crime - but implying that someone is guilty of it (which I presume she does in her book as I somehow haven't found the time to buy it) without allowing them the chance to clear their name is not the way to go about seeking justice. Either way, this trial by media is deeply distasteful.

Sam29 · 22/10/2002 21:02

I agree with that one, the press need to lay off her. She was raped, it's her decision to disclose or not.

jessi · 22/10/2002 21:14

Megg, lol about the Italian! I think Ulrika's Svenison or whatever she called him revelations were pukesville. God knows why anyone would be remotely interested? I am now intrugued Dixie as to who you think it is. I am now certain it can't be JL as he couldn't have done the interview with Clifford.. surely?

Dixie · 22/10/2002 21:29

See jessi, thats what i mean..it doesn't ring true...but then the others seem to have 'heard' some stuff that makes it believeable..i don't know...but i hope its not JL...i think he's really nice

rosehip · 22/10/2002 21:58

In reply to the original post. Making pots of money in order to retire comfortably when the works dries up and school fees and surgery bills need paying. MILKING THE MOMENT!!

jessi · 22/10/2002 22:03

Dixie, I agree, have always loved a scots accent, especially JL's!

prufrock · 22/10/2002 22:09

I didn't see This Morning - but the Evening Standard Diary made a point of mentioning that whn Max Clifford appeared on TM, the rape alegation was the one thing that wasn't discussed. The piece was v. much like other media "hints" like the "Jack Straw had no comment" apropos of nothing when it was his son caught with dope.
I agree that she should get sympathy for rape, if it happened, whenever it happened. But I think that by telling the story to the press in a crass attempt to sell more books rather than dealing with it privatley she loses this right. There will never be a trial now, so JL -if indeed it is him- will have no chance to clear his name.
