I,ve been a mumnetter for a little while now and ive just had the most brian numbingly stupid thought. I was browsing through another thread asking how Suedomin was as she lives in indonisia(forgive me if im wrong), and it suddenly dawned on me that mumsnetters are spread around the world(the wonders of the www), i suppose i thought(stupid i know) that you all lived in the uk, so i thought id ask(if you dont mind) where abouts other mumsnetters live .I live in the south of England(south gloucestershire to be precise).

I live on the rolling lowlands of the Atlas Mountains. The air is warm and the ground is lush with Autumn vegetation. I can see my sheep and goats grazing from our 100ft picture window, and the hens are a calling.

Salisbury actually.

I live on Vashon Island, near Seattle, Washington, USA. Nope, didn't vote for the cowboy in office. Here's a link to our chamber of commerce site with gorgeous pictures if anyone is interested: www.vashonchamber.com/web_docs/new_main.html

Rosehip, welcome to Mumsnet! Here's how to make links and for anyone else who doesn't know how to do it. You'll need to scroll a little way down the page for the instructions.

I don't think I know any of you, but just looking at the last few entries, my cousin and his wife (and baby) live in dunfermline, I used to live in Bromley as a kid, my SIL is from near Cardiff, and I have friends in Newcastle, Liverpool, London, Reading, etc. In fact, the only place I don't know anyone at all is Surrey, which is just as well, as most of you seem to live there!!!

Corbin, is Vashon Island the one that Betty Mcdonald used to live on and wrote books about? (Her island is in Pugin (?) Sound I think.) It sounded idyllic, if a bit inaccessible in winter, and rather wet!

Corbin · 19/10/2002 14:23

Janh,

Yes, this is the right island. Vashon is just a hotbed of writers, musicians and performers of all kinds, we have such fun festivals! Here is a look at Betty MacDonald's house:

Sorry, forgot to answer your other question/statement. It's quite wet here, but we don't actually get more rain than most other places. It's just spread out over the year lightly so that it seems it's always raining! It's always a bit of a pain getting to the mainland, simply because you have to sit in your car in line for the ferry for a long time, but it's no different in winter than in summer. In fact, the fare rate goes down in the winter months.

Before having dd, I commuted to work in Seattle from the island, now THAT was a pain! I left the house at 5am and returned at 7:30pm. I spent about 3 hours total on travel every day. Thankfully, I took the public bus so I didn't have to drive and saved gas and money. Not to mention sanity-I'd have lost my mind driving in city traffic every day.

Edinburgh for last ten years. Born near Glasgow and have spent all my life in various parts of the Central belt of Scotland.

jodee · 19/10/2002 15:01

Croydon ... apparently it's now the alternative movie location to New York or Prague!

Viv · 19/10/2002 15:28

New Forest, about 15mins from Southampton.
Charliesmum, use to work in Salisbury up until a year ago so know it well.

Thanks, Corbin, just checked it out - I want to go and stay there for B & B, NOW!

Onions in the Stew was the book I was thinking of, when they lived there with teenagers, I must dig it out and read it again. Lucky you to live there, will you have to go back to the dreaded commute some time?

bee · 19/10/2002 17:28

Cambridge - but grew up and went to school in West Sussex

oxocube · 19/10/2002 17:41

Grew up in Newcastle but then moved to Croydon, then Switzerland and now Holland. Intrigued to learn that Croydon is the new place to be!!! Ailsa, the only other Ailsa I heard of was one who used to go out with a (very!!!)ex-boyfriend called Rob! Its not you is it? That would be so funny, such a small world!!!
