Welcome everyone

Hothell, the CVS (villocentesi) is done at 12 weeks whereas the amnio is done much later, 16 - 20 weeks I think. I was only offered one because of being over 35, here in Milan anyway you don't get offered anything other than the nuchal scan and/or the blood tests unless there's a reason for heightened risk, also because it is an invasive procedure and does carry a risk of miscarriage.

Mummymic, you listed everything so eloquently, especially the bit about the black bogies. I'd started to list all the good points like you did but my DD pressed back so I couldn't be bothered to write it all out again. I know what you mean about Bergamaschi, all the ones I knew had really loud voices, must have been all that hollering from one mountain to another.

hotHELL · 12/11/2007 21:29

Thank you Brangelina, which procedure carries a higher risk of miscarriage?

Brangelina · 12/11/2007 21:38

In theory the CVS, it's supposed to be 2% risk against the 1% of the amnio. However, the risk statistics are generalised, you have to look at the consultant's record. where I had mine he said he hadn't lost a baby in 3 years or something like that and that was at Milan's biggest teaching hospital where everyone goes.

I chose the CVS despite the higher risk for the simple reason that it was done earlier and so if necessary "resolved" with much less trauma. I couldn't have imagined waiting until 16/20 weeks complete with bump and possibly the baby kicking and then finding out something was wrong. Plus apparently the CVS checks for some things not covered by the amnio. Anyway, I'm glad a did it as I could breathe a sigh of relief much sooner than is usual.

PippiCalzelunghe · 12/11/2007 21:39

the amnio. to put it simply it's a needle that goes into your belly, isn't it? yes in italy is more common to have it done I think (possibly privately though). all my friends had it done and they were all under 35. tbh not sure whether I'd do it and what would I do with the info.

wes hould have bought some postcards at the NPG...

PippiCalzelunghe · 12/11/2007 21:42

uh I am wrong then. sorry I didn't know. yes bran I'd have rather know anything then. now the baby is def here, kicking right now etc... much harder to take in. I have bookes a great gynecologist for next week. at least when they do the scan they'll take their time, explain everything properly, give us as many pics a s possible and give loads of advice.

Brangelina · 12/11/2007 21:49

In bocca al lupo for next week, I'm sure everything will be fine. A lot of younger people get it done privately in Italy, the state only pays if there is a legitimate reason for doing it (family history, age etc.). My ginecologa was against it on principle but still referred me.

francagoestohollywood · 12/11/2007 21:51

I'm convinced that in Italy amnios are offered for free after 35yr.

OP posts:
Brangelina · 12/11/2007 21:52

Yes they are.

PippiCalzelunghe · 12/11/2007 21:54

bran do you like your job?

Brangelina · 12/11/2007 22:01

I love the freedom (I can do my own hours, work from home when I want etc.) but I don't find it very exciting, no. I had much more fun when I was fiddling about with computers and not having to constantly chase people about things they're not doing. Also, there's a going to be a fair bit of travel involved shortly, which I would have jumped at pre DD, but now I've got a 2 yr old I'm not so keen, as I'm sure you understand.

What I really want to do is my gay bar near a beach somewhere in Spain.

PippiCalzelunghe · 12/11/2007 22:03

why spain??? I'd be your waitress if you'd do it in greece!!

hotHELL · 12/11/2007 22:12

Can you say what your job is Bran?
Pippi, how long will you be away for?
Yes, we forgot to buy cards from the NPG...might go back durng the xmas hols with ds, even if with him chances are I won't be able to look at anything for more than 3 mins. What's everybody reading?

francagoestohollywood · 12/11/2007 22:15

a week. hothell one day we should meet in Coram Fields (the park in russel square) with the DC. It's great for kids!

PippiCalzelunghe · 12/11/2007 22:21

I am still at the beginning of sophie's choice. haven't had a chance to read another page since I was last on the tube.

I think mine wants me too.

night night.

hotHELL · 12/11/2007 22:23

Adoro Cfields. Buonissima idea.

Brangelina · 12/11/2007 22:26

Hot, I'll tell you what I do when you tell me what your DH does.

Spain just appeals to me more, plus there's more of a gay culture there, which in turn means more custom for the gay bar. And the Greeks seem a bit too hairy.... When I decide to go ahead I will be looking for shareholders of course, as well as slave labour to run the place, so if anyone wants to volunteer.... You can be a waitress Pippi, but at the bar I want nice boys in little leather shorts.

francagoestohollywood · 12/11/2007 22:32

heheheheheh.
I like Spain, it's like a better Italy.

OP posts:
Brangelina · 12/11/2007 22:34

That's exactly it, a better Italy! Apart from the food of course. And the coffee. And the ice cream.

PippiCalzelunghe · 12/11/2007 22:37

hotHELL · 13/11/2007 09:31

Morning, I can only say that my dp is not a pilot.

I am reading some very good Raymond Carver short stories and a book on pregnancy.
What's Gaskell like then?
Pippi, I remember Sophie's Choice being very sad...

Have a day ahead of me of pure laziness.

PippiCalzelunghe · 13/11/2007 09:40

I love Raymond Carver. I read some short stories, which book ahve you got? Although I am not a poetry person much I love his poetry.
