Good evening, Clunkers!

Welcome to the Breakfast Club where the kettle is permanently on, the drinks flow and the snacks are both self-replenishing and calorie-free.

We start each day with a look at history and a tribute to a brave or inspiring woman. Mostly though, we just chat randomly about current affairs, recipes, life in lockdown, literature, music and anything else that comes into our heads.

Veteran Clunkers welcome. Anyone else who wants to join in the chat - sense of humour essential! - welcome.

Kettle's on ☕️☕️☕️

Just read that, Crankley, plus the previous article.

It is enough to make you suspect that it is not really Covid-19 Drakeford doesn’t like, but competition, free markets, and indeed any form of business not controlled by the state. He is starting to turn Wales into a wartime, command economy: East Germany, except not as efficient, and with more sheep. If that is what the Welsh really want, then fine – but it is hard to believe it will end any better than any other command economy has ever done.

The UK Parliament needs to step in now and say enough is enough.

It has been just occurred to me. Is No. 10 doing the obvious? This gives it the golden opportunity to go in on behalf of the people and put the worst elements of devolution back in their box. All with public support.

As Cam says, let idiots speak. Drakeford is an idiot.

I see that Tesco are back tracking on the sanitary products issue and said that they had misunderstood the guidelines. This doesn't make sense. If the welsh assembly wants supermarkets not to sell non essential items they really needs to specify exactly which items they regard as non essential.

greenwine · 26/10/2020 15:22

Yes, I'm really enjoying the chat Lily, that's disappointing no OTD tomorrow, as you are too busy spinning plates.
I've just had some very disappointing news. I was part of an online book club, we have been having some interesting discussions since the Lockdown. Now some of the members have decided to start up a new group, they've told me and some of my pals that we can't join the new group. Apparently we're not intellectual enough, our book choices are too pedestrian and don't stretch those particular members.
Tbh we're really happy that they've gone. Life goes on though.

Crankley · 26/10/2020 15:33

I'm having difficulty understanding why Biden is the best the Democrats can come up with after four years. As much as I wouldn't vote for Trump, I wouldn't vote for Biden either. He will do the UK no favours, is opposed to Brexit and will mean getting a trade deal with the US somewhat precarious.

He apparently called Trump 'George' more than once, with his wife apparently frantically whispering 'Trump' behind him which reminds me of Reagan calling Princess 'Diana George' and Nancy hissing in his ear.

I found this link very interesting: thehill.com/opinion/campaign/499065-lies-damned-lies-and-the-truth-about-joe-biden

especially the fact that in 1987 he lifted passages from Neil Kinnock's speech and talked about his ancestors and their lives down the mines. His ancestors never worked in the mines, Neil Kinnock's did. I find this totally bizarre.

MoreHippoThanPenguin · 26/10/2020 15:34

Greenwine, I don’t know what to say to that. It is quite preposterous to tell someone that “they not are intellectual enough” and that “book choices are pedestrian”. What kind of people are those?

Having said that, I think there is a certain group of people who have a preference for “difficult books”. Who think that books only are good if they are depressing, difficult to understand and written with some obscure technique.... even if they don’t really “get” the books themselves. There is a name for them in Swedish.

@DistantShores1

I've missed a lot since I left for my day out. The weather has been up and down. We have driven the coastal route up via Tor Head. Not for the faint hearted Grin Stopped at Glenarrif to see the waterfalls. Sadly there was no Annie going over them in a barrel. Hoping your Nelly Jelly was a hit.
We haven’t had it yet 😁

Looking forward to tasting it. 😁

Photos look 😍

That is outrageous and nasty. Sounds as if you are much better off without them. Pretentious idiots.
Nelllyyy · 26/10/2020 15:53

MrN has not long arrived home, he has come in with 2 boxes of pineapple Jaffa Cakes, I will let you know if they are a yah or a nah. 🍍🍍🍍

The Nelly jelly has a touch to much wobble on the top so will leave in fridge until we will eat it a bit later. 🍓🍓🍓

Glad they have back tracked on the sanitary products. 👍🏻

DistantShores1 · 26/10/2020 16:03

Where's Teffy when we need an expert opinion?
She is our official Judge Jaffa. They need to be Teffy tested before approved for the BC.

MissSarahThane · 26/10/2020 16:05

I'm having difficulty understanding why Biden is the best the Democrats can come up with after four years.

Why can't a country the size of America produce better Presidential candidates? Even if Biden was the ideal candidate in all other respects, he turns 78 next month.

Hillary I think had the intellectual ability, but there were other things against her.

In Wales, surely one size doesn't fit all for lockdowns? Cities such as Cardiff and Swansea must have very different needs from other much more sparsely populated parts.

May they all be very happy examining their own fundaments - that's what I'd be thinking. Better to be a part of a a nice and normal, kind group - they don't sound very nice. There are ways and means of breaking 'bad' news, afterall.
Therebythedoor · 26/10/2020 16:11

Ooh Milk Jelly was my Dad's favourite when my mum was alive. I made him one a couple of months' ago but didn't get any feedback... so probably not a success. I don't like jelly myself so it was the first one I've ever made.

LilyLangtrey · 26/10/2020 16:28

Tbh we're really happy that they've gone. Life goes on though.

Sounds like the best solution all round, greenwine. You're happy, they're happy. Each to their own.

Where's Teffy with the Jaffa cakes?

That tiny little pastry just wasn't enough...

EWM closed in my nearest city a month ago. Distraught. This time last year, it was a busy bustling all-year-round tourist destination. Now it's a ghost town. You even have to make an appointment to shop in the M&S food hall.

Goodness, it's not like that here. My town is a fairly touristy place, though not one of the big destinations. The High Street has been busy since the first lockdown ended. Someone at the biggest attraction that's currently open told me recently that they've had overseas visitors this summer, and even a coachload from Essex recently!

Biggest gripe about my High Street, and this goes back years, is that it is all about the tourists. Eating and drinking places, charity shops, hairdressers and antique shops. You can't do your daily or weekly shop there. There's still a PO, in the back of the chemists. All the banks now gone.

M&S Food Hall (in a different town a mile away) is open to all - I haven't seen even a little queue for months. I haven't ventured as far as Morrisons, though, I don't know what that's like.

When I visited Major Tourist City back in mid September it was moderately busy with locals, but no coachloads of daytrippers. But it lost its Debenhams last year and a long established independent department store (which I liked) closed 2-3 years ago, so that's left a big hole in the shopping area.

greenwine · 26/10/2020 17:02

Sounds like the best solution all round, greenwine. You're happy, they're happy. Each to their own
Yes, it's definitely the best solution, my objection was the way it was done. Cruel language was used and people were scorned. I didn't think that the unpleasantness was necessary.

TracysShoulder · 26/10/2020 17:05

Crikey, I've only been away a while and have missed so much.

I appear to have mislaid the scones. I'll leave this here until I locate them. Grin

The Breakfast Club Returns!
TracysShoulder · 26/10/2020 17:10

Apparently the scones were never missing. A butler went round the opposite way to me with the trolley.

If anyone would like a glass of sparkling wine to go with it, help yourselves.

Ooh, lovely, Tracy! Thank you.

Good news that the tanker incident has been resolved without casualties.

The UK Parliament needs to step in now and say enough is enough.

I could not agree more Lily. It's almost as if Covid has been a window of opportunity for the left/socialism to stealthily rise above the government. I'm really very worried about it all.

meercat23 · 26/10/2020 17:17

So short sighted though. People will remember this lunacy when they next get to vote.

Nelllyyy · 26/10/2020 17:21

Oh Tracy that looks lovely, I think I will have a bit of everything, instead of wine I’ll have a sparkling water.

I have a photo of my Nelly Jelly in the large Pyrex jug. 😉 😁

Nelllyyy · 26/10/2020 17:22

Forgot to say “Thank you”. 😁👍🏻🍓

TracysShoulder · 26/10/2020 17:35

Teflon, it is so sad to see the decline of traditional, long standing businesses. How will we ever recover from it?

Greenwine that is appalling. Didn't you suspect that they were uppity? I can safely say you are far better off without them. Read whatever you want to read, always.

MrN is dangerous. 12 Crispy Cremes the other day and now boxes of jaffa cakes? I'm piling weight on here in the BC with you Grin

Crankley, it beggars belief that those 2 are the best the US has to offer. I'm not following it closely, but I have a feeling that the same will happen there as did here in December: silent majority.

Department stores are fast disappearing aren't they Sarah? It's very sad.

AnneRIPanki · 26/10/2020 17:37

Lovely spread @TracysShoulder .

greenwine · 26/10/2020 17:37

Meercat23, I believe that Drakeford has already said that next year's Welsh election will be postponed because of Covid. I'm not sure how far into the future that idiot can see. He obviously doesn't see unemployment and job losses because of his policies.
I've heard that he's so far to the Left that he makes Corbyn look like an extreme right winger.
