Good evening, Clunkers!

Welcome to the Breakfast Club where the kettle is permanently on, the drinks flow and the snacks are both self-replenishing and calorie-free.

We start each day with a look at history and a tribute to a brave or inspiring woman. Mostly though, we just chat randomly about current affairs, recipes, life in lockdown, literature, music and anything else that comes into our heads.

Veteran Clunkers welcome. Anyone else who wants to join in the chat - sense of humour essential! - welcome.

Kettle's on ☕️☕️☕️

Signing in, Lily. Seems a lifetime since I have seen you. Can't believe BC1 is nearly at a thousand posts. It was lovely talking about buttons and lots of discussions surrounding the women in the BC gallery.

So sorry to hear about Dizzy. Hope MrL is bearing up at the decision and you are two.

Stepping over the threshold trying not to spill my cocktail from last thread.

Thank you Lily. So very sorry about Dizzy Sad

I hadn't noticed we were nearly up to 1000 posts. Shock

DistantShores1 · 18/10/2020 20:49

Signing in with my mocktail.
Thank you Lily for the new thread.

Looking forward to reading where the BC topics will take us to next.

MoreHippoThanPenguin · 18/10/2020 20:49

Signing in.

So sorry to hear about Dizzy Lily. Hope you are ok.

I’ll have a herbal tea please 😀. I am trying to look after myself a bit after a hectic few weeks with too much chocolate and biscuits.

Half term tomorrow. I usually have a lot planned and dash madly to get everyone to where they need to be, but not this time, I am just too exhausted. I will try to sort some things out later. It is Mr Hippo’s birthday tomorrow, so the only plan so far is cake for breakfast!

ZombieFan · 18/10/2020 21:15

Opps just filled my wine glass up to full. 😅 Hope I don spill any on the new carpet.

Good evening Clunkers and Lady of the house.

Nelllyyy · 18/10/2020 21:24

Evening Lily.

Good evening Clunkers.

No emojis.

Aww shame about Dizzy, but it is what is best for both of you. ❤️

Ahh Dizzy

Nelllyyy · 18/10/2020 21:25

I must be drunk on Maccy Dees.

Sorry for above mistakes in above post. 🥴

Hi again, BakedCam

I always thought GM, Lancashire & Liverpool should have got together and either all went into tier 3 together or not. AB is definitely more of a challenger than Sir Static.

I agree scientists are only taking into account the impact of the virus now, and little consideration on the economy. After all they get blamed if the virus gets worse but almost zero blame if the UK goes bankrupt.

I imagine C5 thought they should have a token right winger on so they could 'pretend' they werent left wing. Backfired on them lol

IIRC along with Yasmin and Fox I think Iain Dale was the third panellist but he got a word in edgewise, if you can believe twitter.

ZombieFan · 18/10/2020 21:35

IIRC along with Yasmin and Fox I think Iain Dale was the third panellist but he didn't get a word in edgewise, if you can believe twitter. Oh for an edit button.

thefatladyscreams · 18/10/2020 22:10

So sorry re Dizzy. Good night everyone.

yellowspanner · 18/10/2020 22:16

Thanks for the new thread Lily and I am so sorry about Dizzy. You must be heartbroken, I know I would be.
Don't worry about OTD. Have a day off.
Good night BCers.

BigGreenOlives · 18/10/2020 22:50

Good night all. Thank you for the new thread @LilyLangtrey.

Hi lovely Zombie,

It was always in the original script authored by Rasputin that lockdown, open up, lockdown for the winter. This is about protecting the NHS again. Not about public health. I appreciate that the NHS cannot be overwhelmed - the science is not settled on how the world was formed, never mind on the behaviour of this virus. The public health v economic impact has not been on the agenda for SAGE and Imperial College. The IC report has been widely criticised and is no more than Sim City- there is a place for mathematical modelling of course, (please don't ask me where Grin) but the IC report was vastly incorrect. The problem isn't the virus, it is the NHS and that it is constantly balancing its books and bed managing. The Nightingales can only accommodate very poorly people with catheters as they are not equipped properly. Then they have to be staffed. While other countries in Europe are not having easier times in terms of managing the virus, many of them have better healthcare systems than the UK that are financially robust.

AB has brought this to the forefront, I'm not saying he is right - but I agree that the discussions need to be had. None of those northern boroughs he is fighting for have wealthy LAs. (Many of them have been rinsed by Labour and swung blue in GE19)

Haha. I do agree on C5, but surely, someone better than YAB.

Hope you're doing okay with life etc.

ZombieFan · 18/10/2020 23:54

Hey BakedCam

Yes I agree with your post. Unfortunately the NHS is a religion now, Labour wont change it and the public wont let the Tories change it. Seems we are stuck with the current system for another generation.

I am doing ok, over the down turns but not figured out how to get any upturn yet. The virus is still very dampening on anything new.

How's things with you?

xoxo

thegcatsmother · 19/10/2020 01:10

Lily So sorry about Dizzy; I thought his owner was going into sheltered housing and couldn't take him? It will all work out, and I would lay odds you get him back.

SulisMinerva · 19/10/2020 06:40

So sorry to hear about Dizzy, Lily. It must have been very upsetting for you.

Looking forward to reading the latest OTD over breakfast.

LilyLangtrey · 19/10/2020 06:50

Morning, Clunkers!

No OTD this morning Shock but tomorrow, we bounce back on track.

I've just had a proper read of the last thirty posts or so of the last thread and you lot do know how to cheer me up! In no particular order..

YAB. I love that woman Grin Every time her face appears on TV and she opens her mouth to whinge speak, she galvanises MrL into action. He jumps up, shouts, "Not her again!" and storms off into the kitchen to make me a posh coffee. I do enjoy a posh coffee.

Apple crumble cake, mmm. That must have been you, Distant. At some stage in the near future, I think we need an offshoot of the BC - the Breakfast Club Baking Corner. Our new premises will be big enough. Those traybake recipes you gave us are now standard hits with Future Head Spook and Littlest Niece and with my sister as no oven required.

Viking words, Hippo? Oh yes, in Lancashire as well as Yawkshire. We still use dale, fell, gawp, midden, garth, gill, and there are lots of place names like Ormskirk, Skelmersdale and Burscough. Heysham has some Viking graves on the hill overlooking the bay. Littlest Niece is currently obsessed with Roman mythology and Norse mythology so my knowledge is being sorely tested.

Future Head Spook (my elder niece - think "11 year old Dinosaur Chickens") chose me as her case study for her religious studies homework: ask someone you know do they think they have a soul and if so/not, why?

I wrote a long, honest but very sensitive reply explaining that some people, such as Buddhists, believed in reincarnation (lots of explanation about reincarnation) and why I thought that was a lovely idea but that I don't believe I have a soul and when I die, that will be it. But I also said we live on in the memories of those we love and that I was trying my best to give her and LN good memories, and this made me happy. Silence. After a day or so, I got her response: "OK, thanks". So I WhatsApped my sister: was FHS OK? After all, this is a sensitive subject for children. "Oh, she's fine", said my sister. "She just ticked your reply off as 'job done' and she's onto the next homework task. She'll be back with some questions about Latin roots next week".

Love FHS. I tell you, GCHQ will be safe in her hands Grin

I am ashamed to say that I haven't even looked at the news for nearly a week - too busy. At the moment, you lot are keeping me informed and Nelly is making me smile. Still, when things calm down here, I am planning on a day off with a huge pot of Yawkshire Tea, some of Teffy's Jaffa cakes and my unread copies of the Speccie. If I reach the bottom of the teapot, I'll just call out, "Guess who's on TV again? YAB!" and wait for a posh coffee to appear...

Kettle's on ☕️☕️☕️ and Tracy has the butlers setting up the pantry. See you all later...

Morning!
I tried to put a napkin down last night but the doors were locked. I was probably pushing instead of pulling.

Great post , Lily .

Nelly And Teflon make me smile too .
I love hearing everyone 's tales .

LilyLangtrey · 19/10/2020 07:47

Morning, Anne and Sulis.

Just putting this cartoon from Matt here. It's mad, isn't it? Especially in Cam's part of the world.

Morning, Clunkers,

Lily, I loved that post. Made a change from the OTD, loved the posh coffee. YAB raises a similar reaction in hour house. I was in the car last week and she popped up on Woman's Hour. I did try to listen to see if she had improved alas not.

I tell you who I did listen too. Baroness Benjamin on Desert Island discs. Wonderful piece with her. Made me well up a little.

Zombie - we have done a full 365 degree agreement there. That is pretty impressive. (It is such a pleasant experience to have a discussion without the belligerent and combative appearing) I do agree. On the other side of this impasse between No 10 and Manchester, Boris is not rough shodding over GM, he has left the window of opportunity open with some hope they can work this out. I find it all so interesting as it unfolds.

Good that you're doing okay.

Clunkers, good morning. Buikders are back today. Socially distanced of course and all wearing masks. I'm tentatively waiting for my GD to text telling me she has missed the bus, again. This time I can't take her as I have an eye test at 8.30am.

BigGreenOlives · 19/10/2020 07:52

Good morning!

Cloudy skies overhead. Looking forward to a substantial breakfast later.

MoreHippoThanPenguin · 19/10/2020 07:55

Lily, that is so funny with the “do you think we have a soul question”, I would be vary of that as well, you never know exactly how children reacts.

I love that your younger niece is into mythology. And I would love to see the Viking graves. I used to love Greek mythology (and a Norse mythology) when I was little. I always thought the Roman’s mainly appropriated the Greek gods And renamed them, but I may be wrong.

They had this amazing exhibition at British museum a bit more than a year ago (?) about trade between Egypt and Ancient Greece and part of the exhibition were showing how some merged Dionysius and Osiris as they both died (murdered) and were brought back to life (Dionysus-Osiris). I found that so fascinating as never really had paid attention to that aspect of Dionysius. I helped Little Hippo with a school presentation about that and it turned out that Herodotos had tried to claim that all Egyptian gods had Greek equivalents (not true obviously, possibly to please the priests), but the Osiris-Dionysius link and resurrection was very interesting.

MoreHippoThanPenguin · 19/10/2020 07:57

That was a bit of a rambling post Blush. I’d better get the kettle on!

yellowspanner · 19/10/2020 07:59

Good morning Clunkers.
Busy day ahead here. Builder about to arrive to remortar ridge tiles on the roof. At least it is not raining or windy as this is a three story house.

I would like to push the restart button on the NHS because it has moved from its original premise. But this is too difficult as everyone is so used to having everything free even if not accessible within a reasonable time.
Cam should be Minister of Health. She would sort it out.
Enjoy your day everyone.
