Good evening, Clunkers!

Welcome to the Breakfast Club where the kettle is permanently on, the drinks flow and the snacks are both self-replenishing and calorie-free.

We start each day with a look at history and a tribute to a brave or inspiring woman. Mostly though, we just chat randomly about current affairs, recipes, life in lockdown, literature, music and anything else that comes into our heads.

Veteran Clunkers welcome. Anyone else who wants to join in the chat - sense of humour essential! - welcome.

Kettle's on ☕️☕️☕️

That proper made me LOL Nelly. I can just imagine you yanking the plug from its socket. Grin

Enjoy Sunday everyone. Lovely sunny day here, but I'm not relishing the thought of it being dark an hour earlier. I really don't like dark nights at all.

If you think Middle English is tough, try some Anglo Saxon.(The character that looks like a 7 is an abbreviation of 'and'.)

Hope all the odd characters come out ok, it looks all right in preview.

Wow, Sarah.

Chippenham? The rest will take a little time but I'm determined to have a go.

Yes, Chippenham. No, not Tuesday. Try saying it out loud.

MissSarahThane · 25/10/2020 11:29

Yes, Twelfth Night.

AnneRIPanki · 25/10/2020 11:41

Did anyone watch The Lost ( or Last ? ) Kingdom when it was on . They had lots of strange names for places and people. Interesting.

LilyLangtrey · 25/10/2020 11:42

Ah! Got it. Saying it aloud helps. I love this.

Because Lily mentioned Shakespeare, and because today is Saint Crispin's Day:

O, do not wish one more!
Rather proclaim it, Westmorland, through my host,
That he which hath no stomach to this fight,
Let him depart; his passport shall be made,
And crowns for convoy put into his purse;
We would not die in that man's company
That fears his fellowship to die with us.
This day is call'd the feast of Crispian.
He that outlives this day, and comes safe home,
Will stand a tip-toe when this day is nam'd,
And rouse him at the name of Crispian.
He that shall live this day, and see old age,
Will yearly on the vigil feast his neighbours,
And say "To-morrow is Saint Crispian."
Then will he strip his sleeve and show his scars,
And say "These wounds I had on Crispin's day."
Old men forget; yet all shall be forgot,
But he'll remember, with advantages,
What feats he did that day. Then shall our names,
Familiar in his mouth as household words—
Harry the King, Bedford and Exeter,
Warwick and Talbot, Salisbury and Gloucester—
Be in their flowing cups freshly rememb'red.
This story shall the goodman teach his son;
And Crispin Crispian shall ne'er go by,
From this day to the ending of the world,
But we in it shall be remembered—
We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he to-day that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother; be he ne'er so vile,
This day shall gentle his condition;
And gentlemen in England now a-bed
Shall think themselves accurs'd they were not here,
And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks
That fought with us upon Saint Crispin's day.

Thanks @TracysShoulder - that makes for uncomfortable reading, doesn't it?

TeflonTits · 25/10/2020 12:35

Afternoon lovelies. just stopping by for breakfast. Feels much later than it is though.

DistantShores1 · 25/10/2020 12:53

Oh, I read that as changing all the locks Nelly. I'm relieved it was the clocks.

The year we went to Florida we'd arranged to meet our tour rep in reception at 10 o'clock in the morning. Shattered we fell into bed.
The alarm went off. We got up and dressed. Feels like I've hardly slept a wink, I said to MrD. Oh, it's very dark for this time of morning.
The man on reception looked at us strangely. We waited. 10 o'clock came and went. Wondering where she was I glanced at the clock on reception.
Yep, you guessed it. 3.45 in the morning. We'd forgotten to change the time Blush

I guessed right Sarah. Maybe I was born in the wrong century.

I've caught fleeting glances of The Last Kingdom Anne. DH watches this type of programme, being a big fan of Game Of Thrones too.

Afternoon Teffy. I hope today is a better day for you.
What's for dinner?

TeflonTits · 25/10/2020 13:06

@DistantShores1 tonight its Vienna steaks as my mum and granny used to call them.

Otherwise known as beefburgers in gravy with onions, and with that Teffy twist, some of the veg from the fridge that needs using up (carrots and cabbage I'm looking at you). May also slice potatoes into the dish as well, one dish, less washing up!

DistantShores1 · 25/10/2020 13:25

Sounds tasty and posh. It's the Teffy twist that'll make all the difference.
The older generation know how to throw a good nutritious meal together. You're mum and granny knew their onions, as we say here in my corner of the world.
My mum would do the same with a few sausages. Into a pot with potato, carrots, onion. Sausage stew.

LilyLangtrey · 25/10/2020 13:29

Afternoon, everyone well?

We need a traditional cooking thread. We need a Shakespeare/Chaucer/classic poets thread. And words. I love learning the origin of words.

You lot! Grin

Please stop having interesting conversations when I'm already so far behind with my chores today...

Good afternoon Clunkers.
I well remember Chaucer. I struggled with him at school and then DD struggled at Uni.

Thanks for the OTD Lily, I am afraid that until fairly recently women were still considered immoral because of the way they dressed or behaved. If a prostitute was raped it was considered to be her own fault.

My partner is still in hospital. He had another blood transfusion last night and more IV antibiotics. May be home tomorrow or Tuesday. Then to convalescence.
Thank you for all your good wishes.

yellowspanner · 25/10/2020 13:49

I have just been out for a long walk as it is a beautiful, clear autumn day here.
I am craving chocolate but, fortunately, there is no shop in the village and I am not going to drive several miles just for chocolate. And it is not good for me.
Thanks for the article about the EU financial mess Gcat. Very interesting.
I am worrying that David Frost will give in on fishing. What do you all think?

LilyLangtrey · 25/10/2020 14:22

Afternoon, Yellow, every day a waiting day - I know how that is. But he's in the right place and they are doing all the right things. Hope you get some good news soon.

I don't think David Frost will capitulate. Although fishing is a very very small industry now, thanks to BTed Heath and the EU, it is totemic - a very very emotional issue for many. It would be seen by many as a second, and very bitter, betrayal. It's also a key argument in the fight for the UK. Scottish fishermen largely voted leave with their English counterparts because their livelihoods were decimated - well, worse than decimated - by the CFP. Nicola would happily give all the fish back to the EU if it would help an independent Scotland join. Fishing is the sort of emotive touchstone that would make the argument against IndyRef2.

Oh dear, that did make me chuckle. 😂 😁

Hot pot in the oven for later, though I don’t think MrN deserves it after his alarm clock shenanigans😁 it does smell good though.

I have made a jelly or we can have ice cream with sprinkles and chocolate sauce, just might have the lot though. 😁

StormzyinaTCup · 25/10/2020 15:05

Hi Yellow another one hear saying I know how that is with the 'will it be today or won't it'' but you and your partner will get there. Then you can both put that bit behind you and focus on convalescence💐
