Good evening, Clunkers!

Welcome to the Breakfast Club where the kettle is permanently on, the drinks flow and the snacks are both self-replenishing and calorie-free.

We start each day with a look at history and a tribute to a brave or inspiring woman. Mostly though, we just chat randomly about current affairs, recipes, life in lockdown, literature, music and anything else that comes into our heads.

Veteran Clunkers welcome. Anyone else who wants to join in the chat - sense of humour essential! - welcome.

Kettle's on ☕️☕️☕️

Dh emailed me this:
Eu beginning to realise that Brexit has a price.

What the EU empire loses. The list below is just some of the things the eu is desperately going to miss-

This is what the EU empire loses-

Privileged access to the 5th largest economy in the world

The worlds number one financial centre

EU’s number one trading partner

One half of The EU’s two UN big five seats

EU’s most capable armed forces, by far.

One of the EU’s two nuclear armed powers.

The world’s number one soft power.

EU’s most creative and inventive member.

World leading film industry, 23% global box office take.

EU’s largest diplomatic network.

EU’s largest tech hub.

The world’s no,1 city for fintec investment

EU,s only member of the five “eyes”.

EU’s most capable intelligence services.

EU’s largest job creating economy

4 of the global top 10 universities. EU has none.

EU,s second largest net contributor, £15 billion annually.

The world’s third largest food exporter

EU’s largest maker of satellites.

Our guaranteed IMF, world trade, G7, 8 or 20 agreement.

The EU’s second largest foreign aid budget.

Any last remaining, minute amount of credible democratic legitimacy.

Lots and lots of free fish

Number of noble prize winners

Uk 2nd in Olympic medal chart.

And much ,much more besides.

Instead the eu fantasy of becoming an empire of global clout is shot to shi,te as it leaves just a worn out husk of a barren organisation.

At least one European country should be a genuine democracy, thank goodness it will once again Britain

TracysShoulder · 25/10/2020 15:29

gcat Hmm and here we still are, 4 years on still arguing the toss with them. All reasons why they have turned themselves inside out trying to stop us.

We have already made concessions of a phased fish quota haven't we?

TracysShoulder · 25/10/2020 15:41

Yellow, it is so frustrating for you, but I'm so pleased they are making sure he's stable enough to leave.

I am a big fan of 'chuck it all in the pot' meals. I'm about to get one on the go now. Why use 3 pans when you can use one?

Vienna steaks Teflon Grin. Do you know why they called them that? MrT would love that dinner, or anything with sausages which he never gets either of. The only burgers I eat are old mcdonalds (as my GD calls it) and then only every Sheffield flood. (AKA rare occasions)

We just did a 5 mile walk to a local beauty spot/reservoir. It was so busy. We didn't queue for a coffee as it was half a mile long, with a covid marshall on duty. I'm expecting my covid app going off anytime. I was going to delete it, but I'm keeping it for research purposes Wink. MrT has been wherever I've been. So far I've had 4 alerts, he's had zero.

Good post, thegcats

MissSarahThane · 25/10/2020 16:43

Need to trim my fringe. It's doing a Claudia Winkleman at the moment.

AnneRIPanki · 25/10/2020 17:51

My area has no pubs and restaurants open . Cafés are open but people have been queuing up to get in . Their windows are all steamed up too .
I am not willing to go in .

DistantShores1 · 25/10/2020 17:53

That's some list gcat.

I too have been on my Sunday constitutional with my sister.
It was breezy and down by the shore which made the 11.5* seem colder.

I trimmed my fringe yesterday Sarah. I don't know how Claudia likes wearing her fringe so near her eyes. It would drive me nuts. I'm forever tucking my hair behind my ears to keep it away from my face.

DistantShores1 · 25/10/2020 18:00

Anne, I walked down a street yesterday in a little town a few miles from us. Out of around 20 shops/bakeries/cafes there were 2 wool shops, 1 pet shop and a cafe open. All the others had their shutters down. The Main Street has been in decline for years.
It was like something from a sci-fi movie. Eerie.

MissSarahThane · 25/10/2020 18:05

I don't know how Claudia likes wearing her fringe so near her eyes. It would drive me nuts.

It annoys me just looking at her. I should think she must have it trimmed daily.

Weather cleared up here this afternoon so I went out for a walk and did a bit of shopping. Got a bottle of wine as it's half term. An Australian Shiraz which I think I've had before.

TheFleegleHasLanded · 25/10/2020 18:06

Our little town was quite bustling this luchtime, but a couple of shops that are usually open for a few hours on Sunday were closed, so maybe even the slight decrease in footfall has made it unprofitable to open.

However, between my visit on Wednesday and today, a new barber has opened! It was an empty shop front on Wednesday and today, there it is, all kitted out. We now have four barbers on our main street.

All the cafes and pubs with outdoor seating appeared busy enough; still a fair amount of tourists around on this half term weekend.

TracysShoulder · 25/10/2020 19:24

Funny that about 4 barbers on your high street Fleegle. Our village has a population of less than 6000 and we have 4 hairdressers/beauty salons on our tiny High street.

Also 2 Indian restaurants/take aways, pizza take-away, chinese, 2 deli take aways, 1 cafe, antique shop and cafe, a florist, chemist, a very old shoe shop, a jewellery shop, a very expensive bike shop, a solicitors, a chiropractor and a general store, all on one tiny street. No post office any more sadly.

StormzyinaTCup · 25/10/2020 19:38

Fleegle you've got your very own Barber Shop QuartetGrin

TracysShoulder · 25/10/2020 19:50

Grin Stormzy.

Ooh... I feel there might be hope. If only we made that list into an anthem of what's great about Britain and sang it every day we might be a happier lot 😆
MissSarahThane · 25/10/2020 20:13

I've become a real lightweight. I decided at the start of lockdown that I didn't want to get into the habit of drinking alone at home, so I've hardly had any alcohol for months. Now one glass and I can hardly keep my eyes open. There were things I wanted to do this evening, too.

Nelllyyy · 25/10/2020 20:28

Evening all. 😁

Well the hot pot went down very well, potatoes were crispy and full of flavour of the juices, we both throughly enjoyed it, this was followed by ice cream, sprinkles and chocolate sauce.😋

Yellow another day nearly over which means another day nearer to partner coming home. ❤️

Our local Post office closed down a few years ago along with the only ATM machine, lots of OAP’s here and only one easy to walk to bus stop that has one bus route, the other bus stops are a far walk away. ☹️

BigGreenOlives · 25/10/2020 20:28

Evening all!

Just popping in for a cup of mint tea before curling up in front of the fire with the end of the Sunday papers. I got soaked several times this morning. Thank you for the OTD @LilyLangtrey.

I hope everyone is adjusting well to the clocks changing, my dogs were very put out this evening when I made them wait until the new time for dinner.

At some point I will catch up properly, at the moment I feel as if I'm treading water rather than making progress.

lakeswimmer · 25/10/2020 21:06

@TracysShoulder - a bit late as I'm just catching up but thanks for the piece from the Telegraph about the National Trust. A relative of mine works for them and is really pissed off with the direction they're going in and also about the pay levels of some senior staff doing "bullshit jobs" while the pay for lower grades is appalling. They would really welcome an investigation by the Charity Commission.

DistantShores1 · 25/10/2020 21:07

@Nelllyyy have you ever made milk jelly?

Doesn't sound nice but it's lovely.
My mum and DMIL used to make it.
It's made by using just enough hot water to melt the jelly.
Let it cool, making sure it hasn't started to set and add cold milk in place of the water. Chill until set.

No have never made milk jelly do you make it the same but use milk instead?, it is something I would like. 😁

I still make Blancmange, not that often though. 😁

Grhh, I have seen that you have posted how to make it, I’m going to make this tomorrow. 😁

TracysShoulder · 25/10/2020 21:32

Blossom and lake, I think the NT are going to feel the ramifications of their actions in their pocket. So many have refused to renew their membership and I don't blame them.

StormzyinaTCup · 25/10/2020 22:15

Aahhh Milk Jelly, I’m going to have to make one tomorrow now. I haven’t had that since I was a wee small one. Does any one remember Miss Muffett Junket?
