Oh gosh same here. Sorry, I didn't mean to say that having the children had affected my career. My so called career has been affected from day 1 by my lack of self confidence and the fact that I really didn't know what to do. Like you pippi, I was at my happiest when studying. What I meant about being a sahm is that there is always that question: would I feel better about myself if I worked? ANd why do I find it so difficult to explain my feelings in ENGLISH????
Anywya, I think there is always plenty of time for phds pippi. and the good thing about England is that there are less "restrictions" agewise to change career, studies, you name it. When I did my ma in 2000 one of my compagni was in his forties. He had just got a degree form OU. He then went on doing a phd. He is now a lecturer .

francagoestohollywood · 26/09/2007 11:07

rosa are you all right? I heard it's emergenza pioggia in venezia!!!!

OP posts:
Brangelina · 26/09/2007 12:20

It's raining here too. we had such a loud storm last night that it woke everyone up and took me ages to get back to sleep. Which is why I'm stil in my dressing gown working from home.

Rosa, I was in Mestre yesterday and thinking of you "just down the road". I didn't realise Porto Marghera was quite so near. I once translated a report into toxicity levels in the soil and in shellfish around the plant, but never knew that it was so close to Venice and the lido.

Lol at you guys frequenting movie stars and models. Many years ago when I was younger and fresher I had a spate of going out with models (don't ask me how), but after a few months of it went back to the drunken morons as it was less stressful. It was far too much hard work keeping oneself perfect for the beautiful boys, plus a lot of them were morons anyway.

Brangelina · 26/09/2007 12:22

And I must say how brilliant Italian trains are! Milano-Mestre on the eurostar in 2.5 hours and only 23 euros. Now, how far could I get for that in the UK?

francagoestohollywood · 26/09/2007 12:25

probably not even bristol. hei brange will you be in milan 2nd week of october? I'm arriving monday 8th in the evening.

All ok here but it was pretty horrible .
Storm was huge started at about 2am. 8 am dh gets call from his guy who drives the boat for him saying he was flodded in in Mestre and his garage was under water. DH goes out to work and comes back 2 hrs later drenched. Storm still going half of Venice no electricity. DH put on boots as high water in places it never normally is tombini cant manage. He goes to check other boat and drains / clears the water out . I wrung out his socks !! Apparently there are loads of boats sinking as they have filled up with rain ! Mestre looks terrible really bad. We were going to send some transfers we have via the mainland but maybe not now !
The wind has come up now and maybe storm has passed I hope.
Brangelina you should have popped in for a coffee I am only 5 mins from the station !Marghera and all that goes on there is a worry especially when a poll was done and 99% of citizens in Mestre and Vce wanted the refinery closed.

francagoestohollywood · 26/09/2007 13:38

sounds really terrible rosa. It's sunnish here. But i'm drinking a nice cuppa, as I'm cold!!!

Franca, week of the 8th is fine, am supposed to be going to France sometime in that week but it'll only be for a couple of days. Are you leaving on the Friday? Maybe we can do the Thursday if you've got nothing else planned but I'll have to email you nearer the time when I've got the French thing sorted. Is that OK?.

Rosa - I told DP that we have to def go to Venice for the day as it's not that far after all and quite cheap (IMO anyway, he thinks it's expensive but then he's forgotten what we paid for a 5 min journey to Brighton), so when that comes off we will definitely meet for a coffee. DP also insists on us bringing a packed lunch as he's convinced he's going to be fleeced. Do you know anywhere one can eat for a "normal" amount of money?

at all the water, it's raining here still but nothing's flooded (yet). How scary!

francagoestohollywood · 26/09/2007 13:43

I'm staying from Monday to Sunday . I'm not sure I'll have regular access to the internet, but I can email you my mobile number.

You can def eat without being fleeced in Venice. Just go off the beaten track. I'm sure Rosa knows plenty of places. There are still some good osterie reasonably priced .

OP posts:
Brangelina · 26/09/2007 13:48

OK, I'll send you mine too.

I'm sure you can eat cheaply in Ve, it's just that DP's a typical tirchione milanese and is suspicious of anywhere else.

I really ought to go and make a cake or even do some work, only now my cat has jumped up on my lap for a cuddle so I'm stuck on mn (sigh)

francagoestohollywood · 26/09/2007 13:50

better than the milanese sbruffone who think he can actually buy the cipriani...

OP posts:
Rosa · 26/09/2007 13:53

Oh yes not a problem lots of places to munch and prices not too elevated I would have thought a bit like Milan - just avoid the tourist traps.
Just read that 173cm of rain fell

Rosa · 26/09/2007 13:55

I still have to make a cake for dd birthday last week but he chose to be in Monaco drinking beer ! I have the eggs , butter but I wanted to do a lemon one and no lemons !! NOt going out to get some either !

francagoestohollywood · 26/09/2007 13:58

!!! that is quite a lot, isn't it?

OP posts:
Brangelina · 26/09/2007 14:02

Gosh, 173cm is taller than me! I would not be able to touch the cround.

Brangelina · 26/09/2007 14:02

or ground, even...

francagoestohollywood · 26/09/2007 17:48

HELP!!! ds went to play da un suo compagno di scuola, and on our way home he asked:
"mamma, mi compri la play station?" . I said no. He tried to convince me. Luckily he got distracted by the "trap" he had built this morning before going to school with baloons and strings...

OP posts:
Rosa · 26/09/2007 18:20

I bought dh playstation 3 the last christmas I was working / earning. And he had not had one before then either !!!!

hotmed · 26/09/2007 20:11

Playston a 5 anni? che esagerazione, no?
Qui a Londra fa un freddo terrrrribile, che sorpresa stamattina.
Deve essere una sofferenza Venezia con la pioggia....
Does anybody know a good recipe that makes use of piles of chickpeas?
And can anyone think how to translate :"you have to work hard" in Italian, (in the context of a mum telling her daughter to work hard at school)...sorry I am being lazy, ..., my brain never got going this morning.

francagoestohollywood · 26/09/2007 20:50

Exactly hotmed, that's our opinion as well. Never thought I'd have this convo so soon. But ds went to play at his friend who has one and must have played with it . Ma non finisce qui: the other day he asked dh: papa' cos'e' il nintendo ds? (tbh i don't even know what it is) as 3 boys in his class apparently have one . help!

"devi impegnarti molto" "devi lavorare sodo" ????

chickpeas: you can make humous, but I don't have the recipe. (search it on here, I'm sure there's more than one). I'd soffriggere onion, garlic, rosemary, bacon bits, carrot and celery. add chickpeas. add veg stock. add pasta.

rosa, play station 3!!! I guess your dh must have been over the moon!

OP posts:
francagoestohollywood · 26/09/2007 20:51

rosa, how do you actually say soffriggere in English?

OP posts:
hotmed · 26/09/2007 20:56

Grazie franca! non pensavo ci fosse una parola per soffriggere, io direi to fry lightly? boh, non so, let's see what rosa comes up with.
Ma questi bimbi vengono da famiglie molto ricche, o poco o molto istruite o cosa? I would get a nintendo for ds when he is 8/9, but the pressure is certainly on.

francagoestohollywood · 26/09/2007 21:02

It's probably "to fry gently". How come you have so many chickpeas? It's a traditional food for the 2nd of November in Piedmont where dh is from.
I don' t really know the exact sociological background. Certainly much younger than us, say mid 20s. The school is not in a wealthy area.

hotmed · 26/09/2007 21:09

Che lavori fanno i genitori? ohhhh, I am so curious about other people's lives......I don't know if this buying playstations to very young kids is a middle class/ working class thing, or a thing of people who don't understand what's good for kids, boh...

I opened lots of cans of chickpeas today by mistake, my mind was elsewhere and I suddenly realized I had 3 open cans of chickpeas in front of me!
