Hi everyone

I'm back at work after a spell at home.
I skimmed through what you've been chatting about but need to read it all properly a bit lost. It's 37° here but I'm not moaning as I love it. Need to get some work done.

Ciao

francagoestohollywood · 19/07/2007 16:07

Hi Ilsi, I was wondering where you've gone .
Ds just received his first report...
it says that he's settled well into school and when he decides to concentrate a bit more he will do very well

ilsi · 19/07/2007 16:54

Wow! Are schools still going? Don't they get 7 weeks hols anymore? Are you pleased with the report? Or were you expecting more?Kids are really quick with things these days however they get bored and switch off easily too.

francagoestohollywood · 19/07/2007 17:01

ds school breaks tomorrow, until sept 5th.
I'm quite glad, he's only started in January! He is slowly learning. They are really pleased with his imaginative play etc, which is probably the reason why his head is always in the clouds . No, I wasn't expecting much, tbh I still think 5 (he was 5 on the 4th of July) is still little. Lets say I considered this 6 months as a last year of scuola materna... they sang beautifully today . It's a lovely little school.

PippiLangstrump · 19/07/2007 17:10

schools schools che tormento!!! so pls explain this to me franca. my DD is a july baby as well... when would she start reception???

I got a booklet with all the info from the council and I am still confused.

francagoestohollywood · 19/07/2007 17:37

was she born in 2005? depends on your local school intake. in exeter they've got two intakes september and reception. ds was born 4/7/02 and started jan 2007. In Exeter she'd start jan 2010.

francagoestohollywood · 19/07/2007 17:37

sorry september and january

ilsi · 19/07/2007 17:57

Bless he sounds really sweet! My ds is 6 and is heading towards tempistaville real quick. He starts elementare in sept.

I've just read back and see that you're thinking of moving back to Milan. I only go there for work every now and then but there always loads going on and it's cosmopolitan. Anyway sounds like you've got a lot to think about.

It's mega hot here in tuscany at the moment. Are you heading for the montains or the sea?

francagoestohollywood · 19/07/2007 18:01

Well, he is sweet, but can turn into a big pain in the neck in one second!
we are going to an agriturismo sulle colline, 30 kms from Bolgheri. I hope that the weather will get a bit more tolerable by the time we arrive. Have to say I cope quite well in the heat, I simply avoid to move as much as I can
Is he going to the local scuola elementare? did he like his asilo?

ilsi · 19/07/2007 18:22

He did like his asilo a lot, he's visited his new school and so far hasn't shown any reluctance to the move, we'll see come sept. My dd will start asilo too she can't wait for her pink and white checked grembiule. The asilo is really nice, the staff are lovely and the syllabus is good too. Last year I did an English workshop there with the 5 year olds and it was fun.

mediterRONeo · 19/07/2007 18:47

How lovely to hear about Italian schools with their grembiuli! Ms ds has always his head in the clouds too.....
Ds fell asleep at 6pm! The bonus of having a stomach bug, lovely to have a long evening ahead!

ilsi · 19/07/2007 19:01

Mine don't head off to bed before 11 these days as it just too hot to sleep. I'm off to Pistoia for the notte bianca and some sales shopping.

ciao

francagoestohollywood · 19/07/2007 20:57

ciao, ho avuto un minor accident, I cut my middle finger with a broken glas and had to go to walk in centre to have it dressed, all before/during dinner. I had made pasta with polpette!!!
I love grembiulini! Ilsi, my brother loved his asilo so much, that he spent all his school life missing it

francagoestohollywood · 19/07/2007 20:57

at ilsi shopping in pistoia

PippiLangstrump · 19/07/2007 21:00

I love the grembiule too... the word itself is sweet...

mediterRONeo · 20/07/2007 09:27

Hope your finger is fine franca, what a bore, except at missing out on polpette. How do you make them? I tried the recipe by Nigella some time ago, and they weren't that great actually..not as mum made them anyway. sigh!

francagoestohollywood · 20/07/2007 09:49

my ppolpette are good, but different from how my mum makes them, my grandmoher etc etc.
First of all buy the best organic mince. Usually io trito nel tritatutto: half onion (depends on how much mince you have), 1 small carrott, mint and parsley. Aggiungo il trito alla carne + one egg. Then le infarino and gently fry them.
This time non le ho infarinate, I cooked them for ten minutes in the oven and then added them to simple tomato sauce (olive oil and garlic). yummie.
Usually polpette are also made with a bit of pane secco ammollato nel latte and grated parmigiano, but I don't like them too formaggiose.
I can't get the finger wet, and washing is not the easiest task.
Very impressed by your alltment. what do you grow?

mediterRONeo · 20/07/2007 10:02

I have carrots, strawberries e diverse lattughe. It is a messy patch, but still.
Will try your polpette, le chiamero' polpette alla Franca!
It is going to pour here soon!

PippiLangstrump · 20/07/2007 10:47

I'll still the recipe myself if that's okay. I've tried many time to make them and they always had a horrible after taste.

what a miserable day again...

Brangelina · 20/07/2007 11:11

Is it still raining in the UK? I'm really going off the idea of going to England for my summer holidays. Here it's very hot, 36° I think, and you can't go ot at midday from the ozono, but at least DD's nappies dry in 10 mins.

PippiLangstrump · 20/07/2007 11:13

birthday cakes: any suggestions?

ilsi · 20/07/2007 11:47

Morning everyone!

I didn't buy a single thing! By the time I got the babes to bed, got to pistoia, parkedl, found a packed out bar ordered a glass of prosecco and drank it,it was 12. and the shops all shut. Hmmmm.

Pippi you could do a flan with crema pasticeria and lots of fresh fruit on top rasberries, strawberries, melon, pinapple etc..

Those polpette sound yum I'd just add a bit of pepperoncino.

Brangelina · 20/07/2007 12:50

An ice cream hedgehog?

francagoestohollywood · 20/07/2007 13:47

Pippi, you always need to buy the best (organic) mince, sometimes the meat is too fat (e non va bene. the best, apart from the one I buy at the farmers market is marks and spencer. unless you have a waitrose nearby...)
good idea about flan with crema pasticciera and fruit. really summery... but given the summer we are having you could easily make a panettone !
or victoria sponge cake: lots of recipes for it on mn!
ilsi, what a shame! not a real notte bianca then...

francagoestohollywood · 20/07/2007 13:48

how do you make an ice cream hedgehog?
