But English gossips magazines are far more juicier than the italian .
Oh Rosa, you should go back to study! Your dd is still a baby, you'll see that life will get easier in the next few months.

Brangelina · 21/06/2007 14:44

Yes I know Pennac - didn't he write Denti or something similar? Anyway, resisted the tempatation to read it, I was far too into trash at the time, having spent my best years slogging away at highbrow literature. Now I'm lucky if I find the time to finish reading the Esselunga magazine . I'm way behind on the gossip front I'm afraid, but at least now I now who to consult should I need any info....

It's very hot here too, we keep having thunderstorms at night. You know, the ones that used to happen after Ferragosto? Now they're happening in June. Maybe it will be autumn already in July. One really doesn't know when to go on holiday nowadays!!!!

francagoestohollywood · 21/06/2007 14:49

no, I think denti was from one of those "contemporary" italian writers, and obviously can't remember his name. My mum has a collection of esselunga magazines. she's obsessed with her fidaty points .
Don't know what to say about the weather. It's freezing here. It's been raining for days. I'm NERVOUS

Brangelina · 21/06/2007 15:01

Are you nervous because of the rain, or generally because of global warming and the effect it is having on global weather and ecosystems in general? That's the wonderful thing about the UK, I used to go back for a brief holiday in July and find howling gales and horizontal rain when it was 40 degrees in Milan. And ever the optimist, I never took any warm clothes with me. You try buying a jumper in England in July. And as for the air conditioning! The Italians are weird with the dates for riscaldamento (Oct 15 even if it's boiling, to April 15 even if it's freezing, raining and you cannot get your washing dry), but the Brits with their aircon on full blast in shops because it's July, even if it's minus 5° outside. Luckily I'm not cagionevole di salute and don't have a problem with colpi d'aria, but going shopping with permanent goose pimples is no fun at all!

francagoestohollywood · 21/06/2007 15:12

Both obviously !
True about riscaldamento, it's so silly, and true about air conditioning here! it should be banned . I commuted to Bristol for a year pre-children, and always ended up in carriages with full on air con even in Janauary ...

Rosa · 21/06/2007 15:57

We have a portable air con machine as house not ours so refuse to pay to have it installed. Today we have put it on so low in the soggiorno just to take out the humidity . The deumidificatore alone is no good really
We had that tromba di aria here ..with no rain and a few thunder storms rolling round in the distance but nothing here. LOL at Freezing rain in July in the UK. I remember it was the norm to take a hooded warm top to the beach and we had this huge plastic sheet that we would all sit under when it rained there were about 20 of us ! I am packing 4 seasons for dd and she is flying in layers ..Starting with less in Italy and slowly adding bits as we get nearer to the W Country !!
We don't have Esselunga here just Billa ! NO mags just the volante sheets with the offers

Brangelina · 21/06/2007 16:08

Yes, I used to sit under plastic sheeting and behind windbreaks too! I even used to go to the beach when if you poked your head out over the dunes you risked decapitation from the Siberian winds. Ah the days.... Now I wouldn't even consider going anywhere near a beach on the North Sea coast.

Take lots of layers! I went 3 weeks ago with just summer clothes and suffered from chapped nips all week and nearly took off in Tesco car park. I had to borrow winter clothes. The weird thing is, I was the only one with a jumper - a case of spot the foreigner

francagoestohollywood · 21/06/2007 17:22

You know that I reckon I'm well known in Exeter for wearing a woolen hat until mid May .
However, I remember going to Cornwall when I was a teenager and coming back with a tan

ilsi · 22/06/2007 09:04

Hi this is just a quick hello and introduction as I'm off to the shops. I'm doing a birthday tomorrow and so I'll be cooking for the next 24 hours!!! I've hooked on to your thread from another link. I'm in Montecatini Terme anybody nearby? I've been here for a year now. Before that I lived in Genoa. I came to Italy 10 years ago to teach English then I met my husband, 10 years and 2 kids later here I am. I do still miss London but love life in Italy.

Hope to chat soon
Ciao

francagoestohollywood · 22/06/2007 14:13

Hi Ilsi, I'm from Milano and have been living in Devon with (italian) dh and two children for nearly 8 years... still miss Milano a lot . Never been to Montecatini I'm afaid, it must be lovely!

Rosa · 22/06/2007 16:57

Hi Ilsi nice to meet you. Hope its not too hot down there. Steaming up here but teh wind ( phew ) has got up. I have been to Montecatini a couple of times mostly for work . Stayed at the Park Sorgenti Hotel and another near to the springs. I think there is another mumsnetter near Lucca I think .. Possibly Tanktop but I could be wrong I know there is one in your area as she replied about somebody going camping in Tuscany ...
Chat to you soon. Hope the birthday goes well and the cooking is a success.
Ciao da Venezia

ilsi · 25/06/2007 11:55

Hi there

How are you all. It's hot hot hot but I'm only moaning because I'm at work and not at the beach.

My son's part went well. Apart from I didn't know whether to cancel as lots of his friends had caught a virus that was going round and when my son woke up he started crying with tummy ache. When I said that we should cancel he cried even more. Anyhow, I gave him something for his headache and some fermenti lactici and we got through the afternoon.

I'd decided on Thursday to try and be Jane Asher and make my son's cake. I was on the phone Friday to my sister to get the receipe for royal icing she told me not to bother but being rather mule like I decided it was all or nothing, I'd didn't count on the heat!!! It was about 32°c and hence it all melted nor did put any almond paste on the cake first. Then some sort of earthquake took place and it craked right down the middle. I gave up at that point and got my husband to salvage it. How I miss M&S ready made cakes.

PippiLangstrump · 25/06/2007 12:15

I AM BACK!!!! from Calabria. I am all tanned and relaxed and skinny and gorgeous... alr ight maybe not but that's how I feel.

How are you all. I haven't had time to read what's been happeing as at work so fill me in please.

welcome to those new!

I am not smoking anymore, hopefully pg and I have read 3 book by Natalia Gunzburg. Franca this is for you: I could see stromboli while sitting in the porch having dinner...
oh and DD has learnt to swim without armbands or anything - I think she thinks she is 'fidgety fish' (if you don't know the book I can recite it all now by heart!!!)

Still no internet at home but will sort this out soon.

I did miss you all!

The house is great although loads of work to do inside - more than we thought, but location is fab! I am over the moon.

to you all!

PippiLangstrump · 25/06/2007 12:21

webmum ciao, I just skimmed through, I am from perugia.

oh happy birthday ellbell!!!! I am a gemini too (5th for me)... I am glad you like us franca!

francagoestohollywood · 25/06/2007 12:50

Pippi, I missed you! at you being tanned. It's been raining for days here. Anyway, I have to go now, dd wants lunch. I'll be back tonight for a chat. bentornata!
Ilsi, lol at the royal icing in 32 degrees weather

ilsi · 25/06/2007 13:38

what does lol mean?

Rosa · 25/06/2007 13:49

Laugh out loud -somewhere on this site there is a breakdown of the abbreviations.. heat and cakes I know what you mean .. I often use butter icing and do the cake icing at 5am or something daft. Hope the party went well how is your ds now ? DId the bug get him ?

Agree on the hot but for some very strange ( and I am not complaining ) reason there has been a bit of a breeze here so unusual but so welcome !

Pippi bentornato.... as for being skinny and tanned thats me in Cornwall this summer ..NOT !!! As Rosa puts another jumper in the case ! Sounds as if you had a fab time and will keep fingers crossed for you. You sound so happy . Good luck with the house sorting !
