apricot - good question. I suppose I've never been really inconvenienced by one - temporarily blinding myself staring at the lightning last night doesn't really count.

There's more thunder here again, but no contest with last night.

I have been very productive today - laundry, ironing, cleaning & gardening. Am frankly a bit knackered & in need of a vigorous rub down - would perk up if the rub down were performed by anyone off my list.......

Ooooooh! Were the chicks a surprise Helen? How do you know if any eggs have been fertilised? Has horror of cooking a fertilised egg. Do you keep them and add them to your flock? How do you know what sex they are? I clearly don't know anything about this, but am fascinated.

It’s been beautiful all day. Lovely MIL has been and gone. Had a fab evening, sitting out in the sun with her.

I have a huge spot on the side of my nose. It looks like I have another nose, but in yellow. Or, for any HBFs knocking about, it’s so amazing to have such a fresh, clear complexion.

One bantam chick and on quail chick have hatched from two bantam eggs (laid by little black bantam), and some quails eggs I bought on spec from a local farm shop. We have a cockerel, and he does his absolute best to ensure that all and any eggs laid by the hens are fertilised. Nowt wrong with eating fertilised eggs - a chick won't develop in a fertile egg unless it's incubated by a broody hen. Basically Little Black went broody and she's a pain when she insists on sitting in the main laying area (gets quite aggressive with the other hens so they start laying outside so their eggs get stolen , so I booted her off into the rabbit hutch and gave her some eggs to sit on, on the offchance.

The quail might have been a mistake. The internet tells me they are best kept in rabbit hutch type contraptions. Then again, the quail might not survive since it seemed very weak/fragile compared to the bantam.

Oh well, need to head to the hayloft...
