fathers day gift ideas

Hi all. I was hopeing that some of you might be able to suggest some homemade gifts my kids ages 12,9 and 19mos can make for fathers day this year. We are kind of limited on funds this year so i thought I would do the homemade idea instead. Im not really too creative with ideas. Thanks.

How about homemade sweeties or biscuits in a box they have decorated? And OF COURSE the homemade cards - they are so much more fun and you can buy kits with loads of goodies to make/decorate cards in woolies for under £5. Thats whet we'll be doing!!

Hi threeangels, what about decorating a plant pot with their painted handprints, writing their names and the date on it, varnishing it and potting 3 flowers or herbs or whatever in the pot? I know it's a bit of a girly present but still, it's a nice memory of the children's hand sizes at their current ages, and pretty and cheap.

How about getting your two eldest to take photos of you all, sticking them in a homemade book and writing funny captions - or even making up a photo story?

Rozzy, the varnish is a pain in the a* actually! Because it's like gloss it's harder to paint on and takes longer to dry. I had visions of being able to spray the pot with varnish once the handprints had dried but was advised by the woman at B&Q (strange, she varnishes her pots even though they aren't decorated - does she have too much time on her hands I wonder?) to buy yacht varnish, so I did. Maybe there is something better and quicker though?

How about a homemade photo frame with a photo of all three kids in it, or they can each make their own. Use a paper plate, cut out the centre section, and use PVA to glue uncooked pasta of various shapes on it (or anything else that takes their fancy, even paper clips etc.) Then spray paint it with gold paint and voila! We did this at playgroup and they worked out great. I also remember seeing on the net somewhere an idea to make a business card holder but can't remember where...if you search on fathers day craft you are sure to get lots of hits though...

For a card, tape some contact paper onto the front of some folded heavy paper, peel off the backing and let the children stick little scraps of paper and/or fabric on it. The older ones can help cut them out of magazines. You could make it a giant card from all 3 and create a big collage! Have fun & HTH!

My bad partner has just said that he doesn't want anything home made and instructed me to purchase him a case of Duvel beer. Shame on him!

Is it bad to ask not to get given things on fathers day?

I just have this feeling that my DW will get something for me from DD even though she will only be 4 months old.

Am I just being miserable?

We never go overboard for Mothers or Fathers day because it really is a commercial con. The kids when they were younger made nice cards but now that they are older they give their dad a bought card signed by them all and a Terrys Chocolate Orange. I get a box of Ferrero Rocher

My dh pre-empted any present buying by buying his own presents from the boys on Sunday and then showing them to me - any excuse to spend money. I have however taken responsibility for buying the cards.

Oh come on Simon, it's your first fathers day, don't you feel any sort of sentiment towards the idea??? There will never be another "first" one again. Having said that I hope you got your dw a nice mothers day card & pressie...didn't you???

As I mentioned in another thread I really do not celebrate anything as I can't see the point of it all.

I abhor the commercial side of Mother's and Father's Day, so we don't buy cards, but I do love the homemade cards and things the kids make. I don't want to put money into the pockets of big business, but I do like the idea of taking time out to appreciate what our mums and dads do for us (yes, I know we should appreciate/be appreciated all the time, but it doesn't always work out like that, does it?). For me, dh and the kids taking time to do something special for me on Mother's Day meant a lot.

Ok, my dd is 23 months and last year I bought a father's day card from her to dh, he never returned the compliment on mother's day!! But not to be bitter - he never did discover how the sugar got substituted for salt....

Like SimonHoward I don't tend to go for all this commercial crap. But now that she is that bit older it would be nice for her to do something for her daddy. It has been tough for him as she is very clingy towards me and will always ask for me to read a story, me to tuck her in bed, me to kiss her better and so on. So what can a 23 month old make for her daddy on father's day? We've tried the painting thing but I don't think he would appreciate a splodge on a piece of paper - is there anything more arty that I could do for him that she could be involved with in some way?

P.S. Simon, just because you don't expect anything on fathers day does not mean she won't expect anything on mothers day
