Dp has just run some bloke over

Dp has just gone out to find a petrol station open 24 hours for milk for the kids in the morning. He was doing 30 in a 30 zone when a bloke literally bolted out of nowhere in front of the car. Before Dp had a chance to see him, he had hit him and he flew across the road and crumpled in a heap. Dp obviously stopped and jumped out to check he was ok and was joined by the bloke's young mates, one of them puched dp in the face. The bloke insisted he was fine and urged dp to go home. He is now home and a nervous wreck. What do you think he should do? phone the police?

Hope your DH is feeling a little calmer this morning

We turned a corner once to find a drunk bloke laid near the gutter of the road, at an angle! I think it was only due to the time of night/roads being quiet that he hadn't been hit. Phoned the police to alert them

For someone called 'Reality' you seem to have a rather flimsy grasp on it.

Can we please stop vilifying the OP and her DP for actually doing the right thing?

She asked for advice and took it. The police have been called. They will deal with both incidents when they have finished with the priority situation. I honestly don't see what the issue is here

None of us knows the reality of this situation. We're just going on what the OP has posted. I'm sure that when she comes back to tell us the outcome of the police visit, things will become clearer.

Could totally understand if the OP didn't particularly want to come back and update.

What a shock. The fact that the knocked down man didn't want the police sounds dodgy to me. Has his mate who assaulted your DP been in trouble before? Or what were they running from?

Hope your DP is ok and the police come round.

Why do people find the idea of running out of milk at 1am so bizarre?

I can imagine it happening like this. Someone forgets to pick some up on their way home from work on Friday, forgets or doesn't have time on Saturday. About to go to bed on Saturday night and suddenly remembers that they used the last of the milk and there would be none in the morning for the dc. Much bettter to go out at 1am when you are already up and dressed than have to go at 6am the next day.

No. But I do know that unlike 'Reality', had I been in that situation I wouldn't be able to think straight or feel safe calling the police there and then.
It is very easy to say what you should have done.

would it not occur to any of you, having been involved in an incident like this, to go to a police station or call the police immediately on arriving home?

hit and run. i'd be making very sure i had done everything i could to inform the police.

Clearly it has occurred to everyone who has advised the OP to do exactly that.

When I went into shock after an incident I was involved in (something I witnessed, not did myself) I went home, washed up, cleaned the kitchen floor and collapsed in a heap there until DH got home about half an hour later. It then took him a while to get out of me what was wrong.

So whilst I'd like to say "Yes of course I'd phone the police immediately", in reality I expect there would be some delay/disconnect until I did.

Hope all sorted now OP. I had to drive into the nearest city at 2am once to collect my parents from the bus station (they were coming home from holiday). I was driving up to my turning, so very slowly, and a bunch of guys ran into the road around my car. One stood in front, mooning me Hmm while the others surrounded the car laughing and hitting the bonnet. It was bloody terrifying. I kept going (slowly and carefully) and luckily they all moved out of the way and ran off down the road. I was so shaken, and have no idea what I would have done if I had actually hit one of them. I was too scared to stop with them there and scared to drive on. No way would I have got out of the car in those circumstances. It's only writing about it now that I think maybe I should have called the police, but there wasn't really anything to report.

LtEve - yes, there's often a disconnect. I got hit by a slow moving car as a teenager and broke my leg. Accident largely my fault. Initially I got up and started to gather my bike etc to carry on to work. It took me quite a while to realise I was injured and needed help.

SuburbanRhonda · 15/01/2017 11:55

But eve, that's different because you had to wait until someone got home.

The OP was home when her DH got back, so she could have phoned the police for him. Tbh I'd have phoned for an ambulance too if my DH had been punched, just to get him checked over.

Report
exLtEveDallas · 15/01/2017 11:58

No, I get that. But I'm feeling sorry for OP here - I mean it was less than 40 mins delay for the call, but people are acting as if it was hours. 40 mins whilst dealing with her partner who was probably in shock and in some pain from the punch doesn't actually seem that bad to me.

It's easy for people to say they would have acted in a certain way in a stressful situation. To the poster's saying they would have stayed and called the police immediately, you really don't know if that's what you'd do, especially if you've just been punched in the face.

exLtEveDallas · 15/01/2017 12:00

Alma, when I broke my leg (in 5 places!) I actually stood back up and tried to walk away! It's amazing what your body can do at times Smile

Report
TSSDNCOP · 15/01/2017 12:00

They probably didn't want DH phoning the police because then they would have needed to explain why he'd been punched in the face.

And let's face it there's many on MN that'd phone 101 to "report" if they saw a cat fart.

Exwife - you might want to read the OP's updates to see that actually, they have phoned the police. Or not, your choice of course.

Fine by me. Don't forget to pop 101 into your speed dial though between posts.
