Dp has just run some bloke over

Dp has just gone out to find a petrol station open 24 hours for milk for the kids in the morning. He was doing 30 in a 30 zone when a bloke literally bolted out of nowhere in front of the car. Before Dp had a chance to see him, he had hit him and he flew across the road and crumpled in a heap. Dp obviously stopped and jumped out to check he was ok and was joined by the bloke's young mates, one of them puched dp in the face. The bloke insisted he was fine and urged dp to go home. He is now home and a nervous wreck. What do you think he should do? phone the police?

TSS

Do you not think the OP should have called the police at all, then?

As I wasn't actually there so I can't say whether I would or would not have phoned the police there and then. Without the additional threat of being punched I almost certainly would've done.

I would have phoned as soon as it was practical and safe for me to do so, as the OP's DH did. I take the point that a person had been hit by the car, but if my personal safety was at risk quite honestly that would take precedence at 1am after I had been punched and there were 15 of them and one of me.

I think that I would have been concerned that given one of them had punched me, they might have thought that I was phoning about that and not to say that I'd hit a person with my car.

I'm confident that the police would have been able to see that it was an unusual circumstance that had stopped me phoning at the scene, but that I was still phoning as soon as I could.

I would have phoned my insurance company when they opened.

I would go out for milk if I needed it, even at 1am.

I wouldn't nit pick the OP's every sentence on a thread where she's obviously stressed and upset.

It's been reported now, so why are people still arguing about it?

My sympathy goes to op's dh and to the guy who was hit. I hope both of them are OK. OP, your dh was shocked and possibly scared by being alone with a large group - one of whom had hit him - as well as scared that he'd hurt someone, possibly really badly.

I'm glad it was reported last night and hope that dp is Ok.

People are still arguing because they want the OP's partner to go back in time and ring the police the minute he had been punched. I think.

Tbh I'd have phoned for an ambulance too if my DH had been punched, just to get him checked over.

What??? You'd call an ambulance? For a punch?

I didn't say "there and then" Confused.

i just don't see why two adults would think posting on mumsnet to check the opinion of strangers on the internet was an appropriate reaction, either to having been punched, or to ACTUALLY DRIVING INTO A HUMAN at 30mph.

I then people wonder why the NHS is on its knees. I have a blister on my finger, do you think A and E would take a look at it for me? Hmm

My guess would be that the group of lads were running from the police or some other kind of trouble when they ran into the car. Phoning the police while they were there, after having already been punched in the face would have been a stupid fucking thing to do. OP's DH would likely have had the shit kicked out of him and the gang would've scarpered by the time the police showed up.

I'm sure OP was a bit shaken herself having heard the story from her DH. Once calm enough/focused enough they did ring the police. The police saw no need to blue light it to their house and arrest the DH immediately, so I'm not sure why MN seem to think that a police presence was so urgently required that the DH ought to have risked his own safety to phone them.

Because that's exactly the same scenario as being punched in the face by an adult male, isn't it?

Frequency · 15/01/2017 13:33

No, of course it's not. That's why I was planning on walking to A and E. An ambulance isn't required.

thatdearoctopus obviously the One Punch Kills campaign hasn't reached you yet Hmm

I hope OP your dh has been able to speak to the police and they have helped him.

One punch could, if very unlucky, kill you, but that doesn't mean you can't make your own way to a medic for a check-up.
Thousands of people get into fights and receive punches to the face every Saturday night in your average town centre. Should they all be calling ambulances "just in case?"

And of course, if we're being technical, a blister on the finger could always perhaps maybe on a bad day, develop into Sepsis. So, there you go, dial 999 for that too.

hollinhurst84 · 15/01/2017 14:22

One punch kills is slightly different. That's usually when someone has been punched, falls and also hits their head and is then unconscious in which case - ambulance
If you have been punched and you can make your own way to hospital via taxi/relative then do so. It doesn't require an ambulance
Some things do need hospital but don't need an ambulance to get there

Report
NotCitrus · 15/01/2017 14:57

Exactly hollinhurst - if you've been punched but are able to drive yourself home, you can also get yourself to your nearest minor injuries service (possibly but not always co-located with A&E).

The message I took from the One Punch campaign was not to punch people, not to start panicking if I'd been punched but with no warning signs.

Report
thatdearoctopus · 15/01/2017 15:02

And littlemissneela the title of that campaign is "One punch CAN kill," not "One Punch Kills," which is a different thing, you need to read exactly what it says before quoting it out of context.

One hit by a car at 30mph could also kill so I'm very glad the OP's DH did call the police.

I hope all is well, it sounds very distressing. Flowers

Still, i haven't changed my opinion and I have been the only person to offer sensible advice regarding insurance. So I think I will stick around, that's if you don't mind

Except for this person who said it WAAAAAY before you.
And your opinion seems to be that the OP should go back in time and change what her DH did. She can't so there is no point talking about it is there.

Definitely right to inform the police. He is doing the right and honourable thing. It sounds as though the chap who walked out in front of the car was drunk or on drugs and did not want to get onto any trouble himself.

How very distressing for your OH.

Yes because an increase in her insurance excess is exactly what the OP is worrying about right now.
