Dp has just run some bloke over

Dp has just gone out to find a petrol station open 24 hours for milk for the kids in the morning. He was doing 30 in a 30 zone when a bloke literally bolted out of nowhere in front of the car. Before Dp had a chance to see him, he had hit him and he flew across the road and crumpled in a heap. Dp obviously stopped and jumped out to check he was ok and was joined by the bloke's young mates, one of them puched dp in the face. The bloke insisted he was fine and urged dp to go home. He is now home and a nervous wreck. What do you think he should do? phone the police?

Sorry 'some bloke'

dontbesillyhenry · 15/01/2017 01:30

Sorry it's the truth and THE LAW

Ginorchoc · 15/01/2017 01:32

Failing to report is a criminal offence, however as long as its reported as soon as is practical, which in this case taking into account the additional assault the Ops husband is doing the correct thing no need to worry.

shazkiwi · 15/01/2017 01:33

Legally you have to report the accident to the police within 24 hours but I think its better to do it sooner while the details are fresh in his mind. Also don't forget to inform your insurance company. I hope your OH is ok. I was in a car accident before christmas & can say that it was easily the most shocking thing I've gone through, not helped by road rage from the other car owner.

Wishforsnow · 15/01/2017 01:34

My God, why has he not called the police 😳

SoFedUpOfPeople · 15/01/2017 01:34

Hope both he and the guy are ok. What a shock!

dontbesillyhenry · 15/01/2017 01:37

He's hit a human being though not just rear ended a car. However he is calling the police so it's fine but I'm surprised people don't realise an accident involving an injured person needs reporting at the scene

amysmummy12345 · 15/01/2017 01:37

Flowers bet your DP is in a state, definitely call police, give detailed account including assault, there might be cctv footage to shed light into what occurred.

LandLock · 15/01/2017 01:37

The problem with not phoning immediately is that The police might think your DH is guilty of drink driving.

Don't forget here might be CCTV and don't forget that the guy he ran over and his friends might decide to go to the police later.

dontbesillyhenry · 15/01/2017 01:41

It all sounds very odd though hope the bloke who got hit is ok

calamityjam · 15/01/2017 01:41

He has phoned the police and they will coming round to take a statement as soon as they can. Doubt it will be tonight as there has been a major incident apparently. "The some bloke", was in a gang of around 15, and as I have said previously my dp was assaulted, so forgive me for not coming across as mega sympathetic. Under the circumstances I am not sure I could have felt safe stopping.

You Dp did the right thing. probably should have called the police at the time but totally understand why he didn't.

Don't be tempted to offer your dp any alcohol to calm him down as the police may well want to test his alcohol levels.

i bet "some bloke" was pissed and quite possibly that may have saved him from more serious injury. Hopefully he is nit too badly hurt and will learn a lesson. His mate sounds vile and it was indeed brave of your dp to stay.

You make an interesting point about not feeling safe to stop.

Brew for dp
Wine for you

Ginkypig · 15/01/2017 01:54

I'm glad your dp called cal.

Your right that after being assaulted he didn't feel safe to stay at the scene but God forbid if the man he hit say died in his sleep or ended up in hospital and your dp hadnt reported it yet it could have been very very bad for him!

Mindtrope · 15/01/2017 01:58

Milk at 1am?

Strange.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 15/01/2017 02:00

Glad he's phoned the police, that was definitely the right thing to do.
I don't blame him for not calling from the scene - the people he was surrounded by were volatile, he'd already been punched, why aggravate it further, especially if the injured party said not to?
Plus, if he HAD phoned the police, chances are "some bloke" and his mates would have legged it, so there wouldn't have been much of a "scene of the accident" to be seen if/when the police turned up.

It's amazing how mobile people-who-don't-want-to-see-the-police can become. Different scenario entirely, but a few years back my car was stolen from our driveway at stupid o'clock in the morning, and driven into a telegraph pole, hard enough to snap it off at the base (whole front end had a massive dent through) and bring the transformer box down on it, setting fire to it. Thieves both managed to have it away on their toes before the police turned up though (which was pretty damn quick, as the noise was like an explosion, plus the fire) despite being possibly quite badly injured from the collision! Never caught.

But I hope the police come soon - just to get the whole "possibility of drink driving" thing rid of completely.

So sorry that he's been through this - it was probably some stupid dare, or bloke playing "chicken" with the car.

TheoriginalLEM · 15/01/2017 02:01

why strange?

AnnieAnoniMouse · 15/01/2017 02:05

mindtrope

I went out a short while ago to get milk for the morning? Is there a law against it?

OP. I hope your DH is ok, what a terrible shock. There was a guy on the radio the other day, he once knocked over a bloke and didn't stop, he drove home. He says he had no idea why, he just did. The police knocked his door 2 hours later and spoke with him. It went to court & the magistrate said it was clear he was just in enormous shock. Nothing happened. I wouldn't worry about your DH not having called them from the scene, especially as he was punched and there were so many of them.

Mindtrope · 15/01/2017 02:08

No law,I just don't understand why it is so important to have milk or how someone can be so disorganised that a 1am shopping trip is so vital.

LittleElle80 · 15/01/2017 02:10

Your poor DH. He's done everything right. Make sure he is ok because shock may need to be treated. Fingers crossed for you both.

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 15/01/2017 02:13

Popping out for milk at 1am really isn't that strange! What an odd comment.

DH has done exactly the right thing in calling the police tonight OP. Yes, ideally, he should have called at the scene but I'm sure he was in shock. Both from the accident & then being subsequently assaulted!

I'm assuming (maybe wrongly) that the man DH hit was drunk. He may well be more seriously injured than he realises, although if he refuses help/an ambulance, I'm not sure how DH could have made him stay on the scene until one arrived.

Were there any independent witnesses do you know? Anyone to verify DH's version of events? I'm not suggesting he's not telling the complete truth, just that it might be helpful to have someone to confirm it to the police.

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 15/01/2017 02:14

Yes mindtrope because that's the important thing to focus on in this thread Hmm.

FeralBeryl · 15/01/2017 02:15

Mindtrope
Some of us enjoy shopping at that time actually. Just because it's odd to you doesn't mean it is odd.
I bloody love it, I wander around child free, no queues, park where I want. It's practically a night out Wink
If there wasn't a market for it, the shops wouldn't be open.

AfroPuffs · 15/01/2017 02:15

Maybe your DH was punched because they were annoyed and upset that your DH had run their friend over. Not right if couse, but to say you are "un-sympathetic" is rather unpleasant.

Your DH should not have left the scene, he should have gone back to his car, locked the doors and called the police and ambulance for the bloke.

I hope both your DH and this bloke are alright and that the police get to the bottom of it.

notangelinajolie · 15/01/2017 02:23

Mindtrope, because 1am is the best time to shop. Not strange at all - I've just been out for t-bags. Love shopping when the shops are empty.

OP he's done the right thing. Hopefully the police won't come till the morning.

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 15/01/2017 02:27

Hope they don't take hours and hours to show up OP. Calling them was the right thing to do.
