Like most large UK retailers Next signed up to a comprehensive code of ethics some years ago. This covers everything from equality of treatment, wages, working hours, health & safty and freedom of association and much much more. On Children, it says "Next will not work with companies who continue to use child labour" and "Next will support existing suppliers who provide eduaion for existing child workers and gradually replace them with adult members of their family".

Rhubarb · 27/06/2002 11:04

Gap are well-known to use child labourers, as told by Amnesty International. Next may deny that they do, but undercover research shows that some of the clothes they import are made by children working in appauling conditions.

I am not saying that we should ban all child labour, as SofiaAmes has said, some families rely on it, but we can campaign for clothes stores like Gap to pay fairly and to ensure that working conditions are good. If you compare the pittance they pay for the clothes in the first place, to the prices they charge in the high street, it should be criminal! Because they pay so little for the clothes, the workers get next to nothing for making them. I know this is nothing new in this world, but Gap don't even deny that they know about it, they simply don't care.

Croppy · 27/06/2002 11:29

I can't find any reference of the Gap and Amnesty report (I am a long standing member). I do know that Gap pulled out of Cambodia after a case of child labour was uncovered and have in the past always responded promptly to allegations that they are in breach of the ethical code of conduct to which they have signed up to (and which is Amnesty approved).

I am involved in an ethical investments fund so keep a close eye on this area. I would certainly bring the evidence to the attention of Next if I were you - they are especially vigilant.

Rhubarb · 27/06/2002 11:45

Yeah but Nestle still deny using unethical practices to force mothers in Third World countries to use powdered milk, yet it still goes on and babies are still dying of malnutrition because of the underhand ways mothers are made to get their babies onto powdered milk. They too signed up to an ethical code, but they don't follow it.

When a Gap store opened where I live, it was swamped with protesters holding up Amnesty printed posters about child labour. This was one year ago, so maybe they have stopped, I still don't shop there anyway just in case.

florenceuk · 27/06/2002 13:28

Suspect this is completely hijacking the thread but there was a good article on this a few years back here . I guess the problem is trying to define what a "fair" wage is when the alternative is picking through a garbage dump. Yes we should protest against use of slavery/enforced labour/dangerous working conditions - but a blanket protest against cheap labour or trade with the Third World tends to benefit mostly our own workers, less highly visible brands which may not necessarily be any more "ethical", and of course, our consciences, not the people concerned. The sad truth is, the labour costs involved in that cute GAP outfit are only a tiny part of the product - the rest being things like design and marketing, and the relative rewards reflect their importance in selling the product - why else do we shop in GAP?

And yes Nestle are evil but I still buy their products - and I suspect I'm not the only one???

jasper · 27/06/2002 21:58

definately not the only one florence. My bil used to be an accountant for nestle and he said the various groups baying for a boycott made not a jot of difference to nestle as they are such a huge successful company that any botcott was about as effective as p*ssing into a strong wind!
I don't boycott them because I don't know the truth of the allegations which are made about them. Also my best friend's aunt heads some baby milk action group and she is one of the most obnoxious people I have ever met so after she bored me half to death at a wedding about how evil nestle are and how I by implication was also evil I have gone out of my way to buy nestle products. Okay. that's an exaggeration but you get my point

In the q b4 u!

Who do you 'belong' to then, BestDH?

Mopsy x

PamT · 07/07/2002 16:36

BestDH, is there anyone you actually don't want to slap? By the way are you a DH or are you saying that you have the best DH? It would be nice to have some more males to keep SimonHoward company (and for all us Mums to pick on! )

bestDH - do you include yourself in anyone who uses their initials?

I was with you until the Liverpool accent bit. Tsk!

jodee · 07/07/2002 19:14

Tinker, my question exactly! And just to rub your nose in it dear ol Cilla and Tarbie get a special mention!

BestDH · 07/07/2002 19:24

Mopsy..."belong" to? What on earth would you think if I claimed that my DW "belonged" to me?

Tut tut

PamT...There are many who I think don't deserve a slapping...yet. I really am the DH of someone who posts here. Thanks for the welcome.

ks...Gordon is pompous. That alone qualifies him for a slap although he's extremely irritating in countless other ways. J K Rowling qualifies on two counts...she uses initials and she writes drivel. J R R Tolkien (excluded from the initial slaplist) she's not and never will be; she's just another talentless semiliterate insipid imitator.

Tinker...I find the Liverpool accent buttock-clenchlingly awful on the ear. It is up to Liverpudlians whether they wish to remain vocal irritants to everyone not of their ilk, or to tone down their awful accent. John Peel comes to mind as one who's seen the light.

Tinker · 07/07/2002 19:34

Oh dear - I think we have a little attention-seeker here.

Mopsy · 07/07/2002 19:47

The term 'belong' was apostrophised to enable anyone with half a brain to realise it was tongue in cheek.....thus proving what they say about women being more intelligent to be true

Come on then, you have to tell us who.

And does she know?

WideWebWitch · 07/07/2002 20:16

Ooh yes, I want to know whose DH you are too. Please tell us. Or will she kill you?

WideWebWitch · 07/07/2002 20:19

Mopsy, "anyone with half a brain": that'll be a man, then

tigermoth · 07/07/2002 20:28

Ohh yes, do tell Bestdh. Who says you're the 'best' btw, you or your dw?

leander · 07/07/2002 20:45

BestDH, I really want to give you a good slapping right now! there is nothing wrong with a Liverpool accent (mine). Where do you hail from and what gives you the right to condemm scousers? God help your wife!!

juicy · 07/07/2002 20:52

juicy...

May all your future posts be as blessedly brief, as revealing of the content of your id, yet more meaningful than your last.

BestDH · 07/07/2002 23:54

leander...

I don't claim or need any "right", but I hope we can agree I have a liberty to say what I say...

Mopsy · 08/07/2002 06:44

Of course, but be prepared to be shot down in flames.

Shame really, your replies have an intelligent and creative quality to them but as they are also patronising, condescending and antagonistic and you have nothing of substance to offer in any thread, I agree with the earlier observation that you are indeed rather a sad attention-seeker.

Best left alone I think.

PamT · 08/07/2002 09:40

I'm sure someone wrote on another thread last week about their DH getting an email from Mumsnet. I hope my DH doesn't start poking his nose in
