'troll' label too quickly applied on mnet

Often recently, I've noticed that when someone starts a thread that appears controversial to many, they are quickly dismissed as a troll.
To some extent I accept that, as it's not impossible that people start threads to stir things up.
But is it not possible that after having started a thread that everyone starts railing against, the original poster feels a bit cowed by the criticism and doesn't fancy returning.

example(s) please

Kbear · 09/02/2007 22:53

You know you're not allowed an opinion on here unti you've been here 100 years and know all about Judge Flounce, pirate sex and all the ladygarden jokes!

puffling · 09/02/2007 22:54

The one I just read was about killing dogs who kill humans. In this case, I disagree with the poster but I'm not going to start shouting troll because she's no posted back yet.

I do think if people aren't capable of holding their own on here then maybe it isn't the right place for them

its a forum .. its about the written word and being able to communicate what you're thinking and either stand by it or be swayed to someone else's opinion

if you post something and everybody comes out and says you're wrong .. maybe you're wrong .. or maybe everyone else is .. who knows

and indeed who cares

puffling · 09/02/2007 22:57

Apologies for my impertinence.

like twiglett said...

Twiglett · 09/02/2007 22:57

i've noticed that people who shout 'troll' are normally mollified by the accused saying 'I'm not a troll actually'

Skribble · 09/02/2007 22:57

They might not even be an intentional troll ,but there have been a few first time post that justed seemed to court contraversy and argument, they didn't reply on the thread or discuss points of veiws and they have not posted on any other threads or strated any other treads.

So genuine people perhaps, but not really very clever to jump onto a forum and for your first post to ask or state the most controvertial thing you can think of and then step back to watch every one bicker, even if you lurked for years.

puffling · 09/02/2007 22:58

It's not the being told you're wrong, it's the troll cover all term that annoys me.

Fair points skribble.

i'm a troll, i'm a troll, i'm a troll with hairy feet.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 09/02/2007 23:01

Sorry but this thread title is like a headline from a taboid

TravellingontheClaphamOmnibus · 09/02/2007 23:01

I can think of a couple of threads lately where there has been a really contraversial first post and then complete silence from the original poster.

Classic troll behaviour IMO.

TheTrollfinderGeneral · 09/02/2007 23:04

'troll' label not applied quickly enough imho. that vvvqv is well-known for her hairy knuckles, for a start. mwah-hah-hah...

Twiglett · 09/02/2007 23:04

there are no new posters on mumsnet

its the same 50 or so people constantly name-changing

TheTrollfinderGeneral · 09/02/2007 23:05

you wot, twig? [insulted]

VeniVidiVickiQV · 09/02/2007 23:05

Well, you have seen them up close. [freak]

Bananaknickers · 09/02/2007 23:07

sorry just practising my faces

daisynut · 09/02/2007 23:07

well I name changed yesterday and i'm quite upset no one's called me a troll yet or told me to button it!

wurlywurly · 09/02/2007 23:07

is there a certain uniform that should be worn for troll duties???

Carmenere · 09/02/2007 23:08

Look if someone is going to be scared away by being called a troll after posting something shocking/spicy well so be it. Mumsnet is not for everyone. Cest la vie.

TravellingontheClaphamOmnibus · 09/02/2007 23:10

There are other parenting forums with (ahem) tickers where the posters are ever so nice and agree with each other all the time.

They are deadly boring.

TheTrollfinderGeneral · 09/02/2007 23:10

never met you in RL, vvvqv. it was an inspired piece of deduction and it immediately forced you into a confession.
double mwah-hah-haaaaaah...

y'know, i might take up this trollhuntergeneralling lark professionally, i'm clearly a natural.

bring on the next suspected troll please! i'll be the one near the dunking stool.
