and do you regret it?

OP posts:
Quootiepie · 18/12/2006 10:40

I thought I was the only one that had Xavier down! Imagine we all thought we were being unique... all these Xaviers running around!

clumsymum · 18/12/2006 10:57

Another vote here for Xavier, I really really wanted it as ds's middle name. DH went along with the idea right up to me going in for the C-section, and on that morning he and my mum pressured me to use my grandfather's name instead.

I still regret it.

PollyannaInExcelcis · 18/12/2006 11:02

Wanted to call ds Felix, but dh vetoed it. I also liked Reuban, Ptolemy (!) and Raphael.

For girls (I have 3), I liked Martha, Hebe, Cecilia, Florence, Hermione, Lola (glad dh vetoed that one, there are too many around now), Mabel. I came up with these for each child and dh vetoed each and every one!

If I have another child I am going to try for Sonny for a boy. We would end up with Tom I expect

EllieChocolateOrange · 18/12/2006 11:09

Wow, so many nearly Xavier's. I wanted it too, but vetoed by dh. Also wanted Elvis, but vetoed by EVERYONE. We liked 'Micah' but too many people thought is was 'Michael' and could envsiage ppor kid correcting people his entire life.

The only name we could agree on is fairly common, but nice (I don't regret it). I think it is cool that he is named after the second half of our postcode (0ly) as we exchanged contracts for our new house on the day he was born.

NOELallie · 18/12/2006 11:25

Idony if DS#2 had been a girl. But he wasn't and DH would have walked out anyway. It's an anglicisation of Idhune who was the keeper of ...something or other (can't remember now) for the Norse Gods. My Dad reckons he can trace our ancestry right back to some hairy-arsed Viking lord ()so might have been appropriate but also quite pretty I thought....and there would most definietly not be another one in school.

bran · 18/12/2006 11:36

NQC, my uncle is called St John. I never thought it was weird or posh, but I did mention it once at work (can't remember why but not in a conversation about names) and got a very odd reaction from people.

We didn't get to name ds because he was adopted, but I've always fancied calling a son Ralph after my Grandfather. I think I would probably have spelled it Raef though, so that there was more chance of people pronouncing it correctly.

gladbag · 18/12/2006 11:38

I really wanted to call ds Inigo. Dh was ok with it, but it sounded a little odd with our surname, and we bottled out in the end.

If I had been brave I'd have called a dd (and may yet..... ) Theodora or Tilda

dabihp · 18/12/2006 11:45

I wanted to call dd1 Luciana Cordelia...

everyone talked me out of it!

expatinscotland · 18/12/2006 11:46

we'd thought to name DD1 Letitia - b/c it's so beautiful in Spanish and I am of Mexican descent. but she didn't look like a 'leti', as she'd be called by her cousins most assuredly.

DINOsaurmummykissingsantaclaus · 18/12/2006 11:48

I really liked Bertie, and still call DS1 Bertie all the time. When no-one else is listening.

Also love Gabriel.

I did think seriously of calling DS2 Dylan, but am soooo glad I didn't - he's just not a Dylan.

expatinscotland · 18/12/2006 11:49

I love, love, LOVE Luis for a boy - the Spanish way.

But I hate 'Lewis' so it was a no-hoper for us.

My dad's got a brother called Luis-Alfredo and I think it's gorgeous.

jasper · 18/12/2006 12:27

Jasper .
Dh would not allow it so that's why it became my mumsnet name

snowydelight · 18/12/2006 12:30

Lorcan for DS1 - DH wasn't having any of it.

Smithagain · 18/12/2006 12:33

We both liked Earla, meaning Princess. But thought we'd let her off having to explain it to people all her life.

I still love it - but she's no princess, so maybe it was for the best!

TheDivineLiliLaTigresse · 18/12/2006 12:34

Wanted to call dd Saskia, but dh wasn't sure
Someone also told me there was a Saskia at the time on EastEnders so that put me off a bit (stupid me)

LieselVonGiftwrapp · 18/12/2006 12:49

Layla I love it but couldnt do it. DH would have freaked anyway

expatinscotland · 18/12/2006 12:51

I liked Pearl as well, but b/c of The Scarlett Letter. When Hester explains that she named her daughter this b/c she is 'one bought at great cost'.

I have seen some Scottish women here who are called Fleur.

FiveGoldenFIMBOIDs · 18/12/2006 12:58

Cupcakes new dd is called Fleur!

I would have loved Campbell (prenounced Cam-bell) or Angus for ds.

Gillian for dd but that is my bf name and my cousin's name.

KateF · 18/12/2006 13:02

With each dd I wanted India or Eilidh but dh wouldn't play! Still happy with what we chose though

expatinscotland · 18/12/2006 13:03

Eilidh is my DD1's name. She had no name the first 4 days after she was born. She didn't look like a Pearl, or a Letitia, or any of the names we had chosen.

Finally, a midwife picked her up and said, 'Well, if you ask me, she looks a wee Eilidh.'

And so she did. She suits her name to a T.

hoxtonchick · 18/12/2006 13:06

dino, my nephews are dylan & gabriel .

Dophus · 18/12/2006 13:14

Tallulah
Tiago (boy)
Casper

Curious to see Sebastian and Jasper as unusual. I know lots of both and consider then great names. Jasper is currently top of the list for DS2

KateF · 18/12/2006 13:14

Expat - I met a girl called Eilidh when I was expecting dd1 and thought it was a beautiful name. Shame dh's spelling wasn't up to it! Wish I could have a dd4 and insist on using it

SantaGotStuckUpTheGreensleeve · 18/12/2006 13:16

Rainbow for a girl

BrandyTutter · 18/12/2006 13:17

i liked either oscar or felix for ds but dh vetoed both

didn't push it, and am quite glad as oscar now appears to be the name for middle class whites in the home counties
