I was so so sad to hear this. His books are such a huge part of my life and his characters have helped me through some crappy situations.

When I looked after my dying fil I channelled Granny Weatherwax.

He was such a great humanitarian. Fuck teaching British values in schools, we should be teaching Terry Pratchett.

ouryve · 12/03/2015 20:15

It occurred to me, earlier, that if Nigel Farage had read (and understood) snuff, we might not have had this morning's headlines.

It's a book full of the sort of wisdom that I love Pratchett's writing for. If Vimes were real, he'd be deserving of a Nobel Peace prize.

RIP Sir PTerry Sad I would like to think that DEATH escorted you well. I imagine even the Grim Squeaker turned up for such a VIP Grin

I had to stop reading the Facebook statements and the Tweets on the train as I had more than a little something in my eye. I shall raise a Wine and have a Biscuit in his honour and wear lilac tomorrow

SteamTrainsRealAleandOpenFires · 12/03/2015 20:20

Have been toasting his memory. a wizards staffs 4 foot and a half and its got a big knob on the end. sad

And here are the words (acquired from here) :-

O, the wizard's staff had a knob on the end.
It does! It does!
O, the wizard's staff has a knob on the end.
It does!
O, the wizard's staff has a knob on the end
And the wizard's staff is the wizard's friend.
It is! It is!

O, the wizard's staff is long and hard.
It is! It is!
O, the wizard's staff is long and hard.
It is!
O, the wizard's staff is long and hard;
And the wizard plays with it in his yard.
He does! He does!

O, the wizard's staff proves he's a man.
It does! it does!
O, the wizard's staff proves he's a man.
It does!
O, the wizard's staff proves he's a man.
he gripes it firmly in his hand.
he does! He does!

wizard staff magic is all hand play.
I see! I see!
Wizard staff magic is all hand play.
I see!
Wizard staff magic is all hand play.
he works it first this; and then thataway.
I see!

Wizard staff magic works up a sweat.
It does! it does!
Wizard staff magic works up a sweat.
It does!
Wizard staff magic works up a sweat.
It's potent magic, you can bet.
It is! It is!

The staff goes in and then goes out!
In! Out! In! Out!
The staff goes in and then goes out!
In! Out!
The staff goes in and then goes out.
Tighten the hand and start to shout!
In! Out! In! Out!

O, the wizard's staff has a knob on the end.
I know! I know!
O, the wizard's staff has a know on the end.
I know!
O, the wizard's staff has a knob on the end.
It's long, and wooden and tends to bend.
I know! I know!

O, the Archchancellor's staff is longest of all.
He claims! He claims!
O, the Archchancellor's staff is longest of all.
He claims!
O, the Archchancellor's staff is longest of all.
When he takes a shower, his staff's in the hall!
he claims! He claims!

The Archchancellor's staff goes 'round and 'round.
Around! Around!
The Archchancellor's staff goes 'round and 'round.
Around!
The Archchancellor's staff goes 'round and 'round.
That's why wizards don't teach while sitting down.
Sci down! Sit Down!

The wizard's staff! Long may it wave!
Back 'n' forth! Back 'n' forth!
The wizard's staff! Long may it wave!
Back 'n' forth!
The wizard's staff! Long may it wave!
he'll carry it proudly to his grave!
He will! He Will!

O, the wizard's staff has enormous reach. - 1
Yards long! Yards long!
O, the wizard's staff has enormous reach.
Yards long!
O, the wizard's staff has enormous reach
It searches for a bottom like a peach.
A peach! A peach!

O, the wizard's staff is fond of nuts.
In trees! In trees!
o, the wizard's staff is fond of nuts.
In trees!
The wizard's staff is fond of nuts;
Hard and prickly and nice soft butts.
In the trees? In the trees?

But the wizard's staff is a maid's delight. - 2
Oh, no! Oh, no!
But the wizard's staff is a maid's delight.
Oh, no!
But the wizard's staff is a maid's delight.
For maidens and wizards come out at night.
Oh, yes! Oh, yes!

O, the wizard's staff staff rises to the call.
It does! it does!
O, the wizard's staff rises to the call it does.
O, the wizard's staff rises to the call,
When the maiden, she wear nothing at all.
It does! It does!

When a naked maiden takes a stand,
And she will! She will!
When a naked maiden takes a stand,
And she will!
When a naked maiden takes a stand.
The staff says: "To hell your your right hand."
It will! it will!

O, the staff goes in and then goes out. - 3
In! Out! In! Out!
O, the staff goes in and then goes out.
In! Out!
O, the staff goes in and then goes out
Spread things up and start to shout!
In! Out!

Well, the maiden's child has a wizard's staff.
I saw! I saw!
Well, the maiden's child has a wizard's staff,
I saw!
Well, the maiden's child has a wizard's staff
After all he's a real son-of-a-staff.
Poor thing! Poor thing!

O, the wizard's staff has a knob on the end. - 4
It does! It does!
O, the wizard's staff has a knob on the end.
It does!
O, the wizard's staff has a knob on the end.
And the wizard's staff is the wizard's friend.
It is! It is!

Footnotes:

1 - The next two verses are said to have been made up at the Ankh Morpork Heroes Gym and Public Baths during a meeting of the Leather Posing Pouch Society. This is denied by the heroes, who want to continue life in their current form ( and species). It is back up by the proven fact that heroes usually spell their names with an X; and usually get the spelling wrong. And besides why would they want to slander a bunch of old men in long red dresses trimmed with lace. Wizard's counter with that not stopping anyone because any stupid nit can hire a scribe and who need to write words down for a song anyway. And what really goes on down at the Gym since everyone knows that heroes don't bathe, so where do they get off calling it a public bath anyway?

2 - The rest of the verses were written by th first year students of Unseen University; who weren't in a position to know any better; at least not yet.

3 - no, this is not a repeat of a previous verse.

4 - yes, this is a repeat of a previous verse.

...................

Sorry that it's a long one. Wink

Quaffing in his memory, most of it is now on the floor behind me :)

MrsWembley · 12/03/2015 20:23

I remember thinking that his signature was never going to be worth anything coz he would sign anything you put in front of him.

I went to a book signing once, took three books. At a loss for words once actually facing him, I came up with the unforgettable line, "I nearly brought all of them." The look on his face as he replied, "I'm so glad you didn't," will stay with me forever.

I still remember the first one I read. A chap I was staying with passed it on to me. It was 1989, August. I can remember the room I read it in.

imustbepatient · 12/03/2015 20:23

Unbelievably sad to hear this news and I'm fighting back tears, not least at all your wonderful tributes and memories.

I started reading TP at high school in the early 90s when a wonderful friend introduced me to them. Since then I have eagerly awaited each new book and have the double joy of devouring it whilst having fond memories of my friend, knowing she will be reading it on the other side of the world.

So long Sir Terry and a world of thanks for your insight, wit, incredibly evocative writing and your kindness of spirit so evident in every page. Thanks

PeaceOfWildThings · 12/03/2015 20:25

Ok. I'll volunteer to post and be the knob at the end. I would have changed my name to Rincewind, but I know that's already taken!

Sybilvimes · 12/03/2015 20:28

Just so sad. I look forward to November every year, but no new book ever again. Sad

The final twitter messages are so sad, I couldn't even read them out to Dh.

Have also NC in his honour (was muffinino). He brought so much joy an insight. Once I got off the train I sobbed at the Tweets and him being surrounded by his family, with a cat on the bed. I love this quote, said by Vetinari after a man beats his dog to death in temper:

A man who does that to a dog is a man on whom the law should keep a very close eye

Very wise. Will be at the Mended Broken Drum tonight Grin

Jcriyadh · 12/03/2015 20:42

I don't think DEATH and STP are playing checkers, they are playing Thud! And darkness is making them a cup of tea, light will catch up soon.

You changed my life, bringing much happiness. X

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 12/03/2015 20:46

I've namechanged (was AllMimsy). I feel a complete re-read coming on. That Neil Gaiman article linked above was terrific.

HexBramble · 12/03/2015 20:51

Sir Terry - you brought laughter into my life when I most needed it. My one regret was not meeting you.

Please everyone, post your stories. I don't do twitter.... Is it really sad to read?

ChiefClerkDrumknott · 12/03/2015 20:54

Hex I don't do Twitter either but from what I gather there were 3 Tweets:

"AT LAST, SIR TERRY, WE MUST WALK TOGETHER,"

"Terry took Death's arm and followed him through the doors and on to the black desert under the endless night."

"The End"

TheArchchancellorsHat · 12/03/2015 21:05

I have namechanged in honour of my most beloved author - a brilliant mind and a great humanist. Like many others I have been sustained through dark and difficult times by the Witches, the Watch and the Wizards.

As a young teenager I spent my pocket money on a bus fare into town to meet him at a book-signing. I couldn't afford to buy the new book but I took two of my battered paperbacks along and he was kind enough to sign them for me. This is one of them (and I know my name is on it, but hey, there are tons of Kates around!)

I'd just started the Discworld books again actually; finished the colour of magic the other day and now onto the light fantastic, thinking I was really going to enjoy reading them again and seeing what else he would come up with.
My favourite is reaper man. I hope Bill Door met Sir Terry on the way out.

OfTheTwilightTheDarkenss · 12/03/2015 21:08

Have name changed in honour of Sir Terry. Took ages to find one that wasn't taken.

I've been reading Pratchett since sixth form in about 1991. I found some in the school library and have been a huge fan ever since. i have never met a Disc World fan I didn't like, including my DH who I met in 1992. We bonded over shared tastes in music and books.

Disc World and HHGTTG are my go to books for sad and difficult times, and for long and lonely night feeding of small babies.

I don't do Twitter bu those last tweets have got me welling up.

MrsCakesPrecognitionisSwitchedOff · 12/03/2015 21:11

I've just realised that I still have Good Omens recorded but not listened to. I think my next few evenings are sorted. But I will probably cry again when I hear STP's cameo.

Seshata · 12/03/2015 21:15

Very much saddened to wake up to this news (different time zone). A good portion of my teenage years was spent reading his books in libraries. I'll be reading DD Where's My Cow today, and rereading his books over the next few weeks.

DamnTheCheesemongers · 12/03/2015 21:18

I've namechanged to one of my favourite Bursar-isms. Sadly the full quote was too long but my hoverererer is helping out.

BathshebaDarkstone · 12/03/2015 21:18

Poor lovely Terry. I saw this on the news at 6. I'm going to drown my cat. Flowers

DamnTheCheesemongers · 12/03/2015 21:18

Probably should have done that the other way round. Oh well.

NailItToTheCounterLordFerguson · 12/03/2015 21:21

Hopefully this works better.
