Having re-read The Half Blood Prince last week, I think he is on the right side, but no-one agrees with me! Anyone else sad enough to have an opinion on this?

OP posts:

And Hermione will start wearing her hair coiled in two doughnuts at the side of her head, while Ron's feet will grow big and hairy??!

doggiesayswoof · 28/09/2006 16:02

Great thread - I used to be HP obsessional then having dd kind of got in the way... I have only read V and VI once - shame on me.

I think Harry will die - defeating voldemort in the process.
Snape is good (just a bit bitter). I think Dumbledore ordered Snape to kill him.
I agree that Snape was really in love with Lily. Imagine feeling like that about someone, then they go off and have a child with someone else - you wouldn't be that keen on the child would you? So he hates Harry.

And Alan Rickman is lush - sad fantasist that I am. It's the voice.

fridascruffs · 28/09/2006 16:03

True that it's the Hero's Journey story, so she'd be brave to break with the tradition and have Harry die. Does seem harsh in a children's book though, doesn't it? Can even the great JKR pull that off and still make the ending seem happy?

CheesyFeet · 28/09/2006 16:04

lol

Is Neville Longbottom R2D2 then?

Snape could be Darth Vader ("I am your father")

Have no LOTR references, never managed to get past Chapter 3.

DumbledoresGirl · 28/09/2006 16:04

Can I reveal my total ignorance here of LOTR? I have always hated fantasy novels and have point blank refused to read it. What happens to Gandalf in the end? I presume death, since I know that is Obi Wan's end. that I know Star Wars better than a great English classic.

tortoiseshell · 28/09/2006 16:04

Tolkien was trying to create a 'mythology of England', and was an expert in norse mythology and languages.

It's amazing the number of parallels. Dumbledore obviously is Gandalf, both sacrificing themselves, presumably coming back stronger. Frodo/Harry obviously. I wonder if Snape will be Gollum - he has yet some part to play, and evil wouldn't be vanquished without his role. Sam is Ron. Even the idea of the Order of the Phoenix is like the Fellowship of the Ring, which breaks, and leaves Frodo to go it alone (with Sam of course) - in the same way that Harry goes it alone for the last book. I had a load more parallels, if I remember them I'll post!

tortoiseshell · 28/09/2006 16:06

DG - Gandalf falls into darkness, but comes back stronger and more powerful. He then sails off into the west at the end with the elves, Frodo and Bilbo.

DumbledoresGirl · 28/09/2006 16:06

Hmmm wondering if I should read LOTR......... Could I stand dh crowing over my capitulation though?

tortoiseshell · 28/09/2006 16:08

Oh, of course the most obvious parallel is that Sauron previously ruled the world with evil, was defeated, but left some of his power in the ring, and he did not die.
He then gradually regained his power, and Frodo's story is the second attempt to defeat him, fully and completely.

Grima Wormtongue is Wormtail.

tortoiseshell · 28/09/2006 16:09

LOTR is fab. I love it. I read it when I was 9, and instantly loved it, and have reread it loads - I'm always really sad when I get near the end!

Bucketsofdinosaurs · 28/09/2006 16:09

Of course Snape's a goodie, he's just protecting the youngsters from doing unforgiveable things.

O/T but Did Tonks turn out to be under the imperatus curse at the end of the last book? She was certainly acting very oddly but I can't remember if she got outed in the book or just in my head.

Bucketsofdinosaurs · 28/09/2006 16:11

Any chance all the baddies will work out what a loser they're on to and revolt against Voldemort at the Nth hour? I mean, they're only working for him because he's got something on each of them so if they all just stood together they could have him. Dishonour among thieves and all that.

fridascruffs · 28/09/2006 16:13

too easy surely?

expatinscotland · 28/09/2006 16:13

The hero has been known to die in such tales often enough, however.

In fact, if you look at the really old versions of these things - before the Church came round and rationalised everything and cleaned up all the forced 'marriages' where the chieftain basically came round and took his defeated rivals' women for himself and then the rivals' kindred came over and butchered everyone in sight for revenge - the hero died fairly often.

The Celtic ones show a penchant for hero death.

Tristan died, Oisin died, Naisi dies, etc., etc.

saltire · 28/09/2006 16:14

Dinosuar, i think in the last book the reason Tonks was acting so strangely was because she was in love with Lupin, but he wasn't sure because A) he is a werewolf, B) he is older than her

Alibaldi · 28/09/2006 16:15

On the chat boards here in the US - many believe that Harry is actually THE ONE, but it's Neville anyway. Both his parents were attacked too, just as Harry's. I don't think Snape's all bad. Dumbledore asked him to do it -as people have said on here. But agree that evil will always exist. Perhaps JK will find an offshoot from Harry to write about next, with Neville as the hero. As to who dies, my money's on Hermione, Harry and maybe Snape. And as for Tonks - she'd fallen in love with Lupin remember but he wouldn't have her as he's a weirwolf

expatinscotland · 28/09/2006 16:15

Sorry, that's Naoise, son of Uisnech.

Always stuck w/me, that story, b/c of the line, 'I could love a man like that, hair like raven, cheeks like blood and body like snow.'

X-posts. Roll on next year is all I can say. Can't wait for the final episode of Harry.

Blandmum · 28/09/2006 16:20

Snape was working on Dumbledores orders.

JKR states that he is dead, and that he isn't going to 'do a Gandalf'

Voldermort is also not HPs father.

He goes back to his parent's old home at the start of next book, and it is 'important' for the plot.

RAB is Sirius' brother. the 'real' horcrux is in Gramald place....and was described in book 5.

Ron and Hermiony get it together.

as do Harry and Ginny.

The last words in book 7 are 'His scar'

Blandmum · 28/09/2006 16:21

snape dies saving harry
Wormtail helps Harry because he owes harry his life

MerlinsBeard · 28/09/2006 16:22

I have often wondered if Neville is the one, but didn't JK herself say that the prophecy didn't relate to Neville? I could be wrong on that though. Isaid earlier that i think Snape killed Dumbledore because of some pre-arranged plan, and i still think that. I have often wondered if Lupin was all he seemed.
On the subject of American HP boards, a lot of them for a while seemed to think that Snape or Lupin had some sort of relationship with lily potter, don't think there's anything in that theory though. I'd love to know what Petunia is hiding, she knew, without being prompted that the Dementors guarded Azkaban, although you could argue that she heard her sister talking about it. I just think there is more to her than we have found out
