Having re-read The Half Blood Prince last week, I think he is on the right side, but no-one agrees with me! Anyone else sad enough to have an opinion on this?

Yeah I totally missed that aswell, though not all the house elves would be on the good side though? ie Sirius's horrible little elf!

MerlinsBeard · 20/10/2006 17:23

in Half Blood Prince it says that dd is a legilimens. Has been mentioned in OOTP that Snape is a good enough occlumens to prevent a good legilimens from telling if he is lying....stay with me ....in HBP when bellatrixz and narcissa go to snapes house he says the V is the greatest legilimens of all SO i am back to thinking snape is a baddy after all!

snape has just nmade thge unbreakable vow with narcissa that he will protect malfoy so thats why malfoy doesn't kill dd, snape does.

Bucketsofbloodydinosaurs · 20/10/2006 17:32

Do the house elves work for the master of the family or the whole family? Because TBH most of the magical characters are actually members of the House of Black, inc the Potters and the Malfoys. (This was on a family tree JKR did for a charity auction, didn't get a good look at it but definitely remember the name Potter.)

cupsnakes · 20/10/2006 19:59

I've googled house elves and there are a lot of sites which mention this apparation thing. The general consensus is that elves have a different type of magical powers which isn't like that of wizards. In fact the elves' powers are thought to be superior as they can perform magic without wands or using incantations.
This has to be relevant in the last book.

imnot27 · 20/10/2006 20:05

Buckets, I guess elves work for the whole family, cos Sirius inherited the horrible elf from his mum, even though he didn't want him, and the elf had to obey Sirius.

Also, Dumbledore advised Harry to accept Kreacher as his house elf at the beginning of book 6 because if he didn't, Kreacher would go to Bellatrix or Narcissa to work for them and would spill the beans about the Order of the Phoenix.

(Yes, I am still here, reading your ideas, even if I have not contributed for a week!)

Bucketsofbloodydinosaurs · 21/10/2006 10:06

Here's the family tree, interesting reading.

MerlinsBeard · 21/10/2006 19:20

looking at that the weasleys, potters, longbottoms, malfoys and blacks are all related!

nikkie · 21/10/2006 19:38

Think it says somewhere (OOTP?)that all the pure bred families are related otherwise they would have died out.

Re house elves think they have one master who can then appoint other people for the elves to obey

MerlinsBeard · 21/10/2006 19:38

oh yes, had forgotten that

MerlinsBeard · 21/10/2006 19:40

the inter relation thing not the house elves

cupsnakes · 23/10/2006 12:16

Am re-reading OOTP. It's really frustrating how to move the plot along Harry has to be so hot headed - with his refusal to focus on occlumency (despite everyone urging him to) and also when he conveniently forgets all about the mirror Sirius gave him to talk to him.
And...
if Hogwarts is so impenetrable why don't they just use the floo network to go places in the same way that they use them to talk in the fireplaces? IIRC, in HBP the Death Eaters access Hogwarts through the vanishing cupboard but couldn't they just come in to any fireplace with floo powder?

Rosyspookily · 23/10/2006 12:28

Yeah it was frustrating that Harry wouldn't learn occlumency, it could have been really usefull.
But it was all part of the plot that his mind was being manipulated by V. It was annoying though.
And with all that powerfull protection at hogwarts, there's still ways round it! I suppose you could say the fireplaces would be too obvious and maybe if you travel through them you get a curse on you but obviously not if you just stick your head in...

cupsnakes · 23/10/2006 13:45

Umbridge even keeps floo powder by her fireplace and I'm sure this must be to travel with rather than just kneel with her face in the fire.

Bucketsofbloodydinosaurs · 23/10/2006 14:21

Maybe she just floos around the castle?

cupsnakes · 23/10/2006 14:30

but she says the Ministry are watching the fireplaces (except hers). Obviously it must be because of Sirius communicating through it but it makes me feel they are connected to the whole floo network.

MerlinsBeard · 25/10/2006 20:48

just finished HBP and am now more convinced taht snape is a goodie....he made sure he kept his unbreakable vow that he made with malfoys mum by being the one to kill dumbledore, he made sure he was the one that took Malfoy, who knows where they dissaparted too? i think Snape maybe took him somewhere safe?

BUT

on the otehr hand....Snape could have kept the unbreakable vow as he doesn't like dd and then dissaparated to voldemort with malfoy

I want to know why dd is so dependant on snape? when they get back from getting the fake horcrux from the cave dd insists that he needs snape not madame pomfrey....

MerlinsBeard · 25/10/2006 20:59

also, the person who will do magic for the first time (can't remember wher i read that) is it Petunia? coz shes not a squib is she?

Rosyspookily · 26/10/2006 11:39

I was thinking it must be petunia, that she is not a squib but a witch. It has to be her...

I thought the unbreakable vow couldn't be got out of anyway. I thought Dd knew he was dying anyway from the poison and needed Snape to kill him, that they already had that arrangement and Snape wasn't happy and the over heard row between them was him saying he didn't want to do it...
I do think Snape is a goodie though there is still room for doubts about him yet. It might not be clearcut with him.

Blandmum · 26/10/2006 11:43

JKR has said it isn't petunia

Rosyspookily · 26/10/2006 19:05

What about Dudley then?

MerlinsBeard · 26/10/2006 19:10

not that i don't belive you mb but where does she say its not Petunia? have looked all over for clues you see and there are no new characters. unless its uncle vernon which i seriously doubt!!

i wonder if Snape really is a double agent like Malfoy has been saying

dewmeadow · 05/11/2006 09:46

I also read in a JK interview on net that she said it wasnt Petunia.

Rosybumpily · 05/11/2006 12:09

Maybe its Harry Potter! That once he kills Voldemort and loses his horcruxness and the powers he has from V then he has to start again as just Harry for the first time....

Bucketsofburntdinosaurs · 05/11/2006 13:30

What, you mean start all over as a rather crap wizard? I suppose Ginny would have to wear the magical pants in that family . I suppose the Minister for Magic wouldn't need to be any good at actual magic would they? And he does know a lot about muggles so he could be MorM. Still think Hermione will be head of Hogwarts.
