Having re-read The Half Blood Prince last week, I think he is on the right side, but no-one agrees with me! Anyone else sad enough to have an opinion on this?

A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess is a good read if anyone fancies going all EngLit and 'exploring' good and evil choices in fiction. I used to hate EngLit at school for dissecting things I loved and here I am analysing away. Someone slap me.

imnot27 · 18/10/2006 11:10

SLAP!!!

Buckets, I'd forgotten about Hermiones SPEW campaign, I guess it must have some relevance. Is true wizarding world is some way behind muggles with human rights, - house elves enslaved, terrible prison conditions, torture in boarding schools etc

OP posts:
cupsnakes · 18/10/2006 11:20

agree the house elves are going to be crucial in the final (inevitable) battle. Everyone's worried about getting the giants on side and ignoring what will turn out to be the linchpin of the campaign.

Like hobbits.
And er... ewoks.

imnot27 · 18/10/2006 11:35

yes, like the hobbits comparison there, can see where you're going with this. Is always the little, innocent types that suprise us all in the end with their strentgh and perseverance and ultimate sacrifice. like, as you say, ewoks.

Oh and Jahjah Binx's people in Phantom Menace, a kind of sacrifical first wave/decoy in the battle. Has anyone seen the South Park movie - pisstakes the whole concept perfectly?

Bucketsofbloodydinosaurs · 18/10/2006 15:51

Where's Expat gone? We need some more highbrow examples than Star Wars and LOTR .

MerlinsBeard · 18/10/2006 15:51

The thing about Harry having his mums eyes......is Harry his mums horcrux??

or am i clutching at straws

Bucketsofbloodydinosaurs · 18/10/2006 15:54

Yes you are LOL TBH I wouldn't put it past her giving him a wish to start at the beginning but with his parents alive.

MerlinsBeard · 18/10/2006 15:58

thought so loL! trying to keep posting until we get too many posts for this thread and MN towes will give us our own thread coz we talk too much

ChildrenOftheCornMeadow · 18/10/2006 16:14

cant believe you think Sirius was gay?? and Aragorn??? no way!! 100% hetero man. now, the elves have definite bisexual tendancies.

like the idea of the houseelves being crucial to the final victory - hadnt thought of that. But then, you would have to free them all with clothes

imnot27 · 18/10/2006 16:20

Yeah, everyone will be running round starkers, having given all their clothes to house elves! Was re-reading HBP last night, is actually real food for thought on Harry as a Horcrux theory which I had shamefully poo pooed before! All stuff about part of Voldermort transfering to Harry, whchi V hadn't intended etc. I know we've been through this, but, hey, just keeping the thread going til book 7 comes out!

OP posts:
Bucketsofbloodydinosaurs · 18/10/2006 19:08

Ooh Alan Rickman starkers!

imnot27 · 18/10/2006 19:13

OOoooooooooooh. .

Starkers apart, do you think there is something about Snapes legelimency and occulemency or whatever they're called. There is lots in bk 6 about how he is a brilliant occulemens (?) so he can read other peoples minds, and stop them reading theirs. I feel this may be part of whole end game, will Snape die to save Harry etc, but not sure how.

OP posts:
imnot27 · 18/10/2006 19:14

I MEAN stop them reading HIS. Doh!

OP posts:
FillyjonkthePumpkinEater · 18/10/2006 19:21

snape's occulemency i think will be vital

and i have been poindering the Revolt of the House Elves all day.

I think jkr's strength is in part that she turns a lot of myths on their head. its poles apart from lotr and star wars really.

Bucketsofbloodydinosaurs · 18/10/2006 23:13

His occlumency is why he is a goodie - Voldy thinks he is spying on DD when it is really the other way round. In fact this the answer to the OP. QED. We may now have killed this thread

Rosyspookily · 18/10/2006 23:39

Killed this thread my bum! He could have been using the occlumency on Dd to hide that he is really a big old baddy!!! double twist!

ScareyCaligulaCorday · 18/10/2006 23:57

Childrenofthecornmeadow, I'm glad you think Sirius is not gay, but now you have to give a detailed list of quotes proving so!

My only evidence is the bit where Harry goes back into Snape's worst memory (I think it's in Order of the Phoenix) and sees his father and Sirius having just finished their exam. Sirius is being stared at hopefully by all these girls but doesn't notice. There's not a teenage boy in the world who doesn't notice girls staring at him, however handsome and arrogant he is, unless he's gay.

And plus, we never hear of any woman he ever fancied.

That's my only evidence. Tenuous I know, I'm willing - nay eager - to be persuaded otherwise!

ChildrenOftheCornMeadow · 19/10/2006 09:21

just started Book 3 again - am reading with double intent - horcruxes and Sirius' sexuality.

imnot27 · 19/10/2006 09:36

Good plan, i thin I will read all 6 books over half term, and go through with a highlighter pen yellow for Harryisahorcrux quotes, and pink for Siriusisgay. Is undeniably time well spent, much more important than writng essays and taking my kids on educational outings!

OP posts:
imnot27 · 19/10/2006 09:40

Or, I could spend half term learning to spell!

OP posts:
MerlinsBeard · 19/10/2006 10:59

imnot, i started re reading with the intention of finding whether Harry is a horcrux! although nit wiuth highlighters, thats just wrong to vandalise a book!!

am onm order of the phoenix now and its frustrating me why and how dd knows so much?? like he knew V was going to be able to use Harry and possibly see through him so avoided him after the trial....

cupsnakes · 19/10/2006 11:14

RE Snape's occlumency - he has to be good otherwise he would have been able to use this against Harry countless times in the earlier books.

dreamcatcher · 20/10/2006 09:40

Mumofmonsters, I can't believe I've never noticed that the house elves apparate inside hogwarts before!
Surely JKR wouldn't make such a glaring mistake...Maybe there's some reason for them being exempt from this rule and that's going to be how they win the final battle.
Even Hermione hasn't noticed that they do this..it's the silent majority waiting to rise up...

Getting a bit carried away now.
