Having re-read The Half Blood Prince last week, I think he is on the right side, but no-one agrees with me! Anyone else sad enough to have an opinion on this?

no one has answered my question on squibs and cats.

[sulks]

DumbledoresGirl · 12/10/2006 09:26

Misdee, that is because none of us know the answer!

Yes I still don't think the reason behind Voldemort trying to kill Harry has been adequately explained and I am prepared to go along with the Harry as a horcrux theory.

MerlinsBeard · 12/10/2006 09:38

can i ask an obvious, yet very stupid question?

WHY was Voldemort killing James and Lily Potter in the first place? Seems like they knew he would come after them so went into hiding with Harry.

Rosyspookily · 12/10/2006 09:38

I was wondering if Dd was guarding baby Neville with the invisibility cloak thinking he would be the one, to go back to the 'its all my fault thing,' because he was aware of the prophecy at that time and the order of the phoenix was operating then wasn't it?
Maybe when Harry goes back to godrics hollow he'll find the object that Voldemort had intended to use as a horcrux at harrys killing?

imnot27 · 12/10/2006 09:39

Wow, Rosyspookily that quote has really got me thinking about the Harryisahorcrux theory! Would be great twist if he does have to kill himself to kill V, but can you imagine nation of bereft children, media outrage etc My friend is an evangelical christian and wont let her kids read HP cos her church says it is the work of evil!!

OP posts:
Rosyspookily · 12/10/2006 09:46

I'm hoping that when Harry kills Voldemort the voldemort bit of himself would die and he would lose most or all his powers especially parseltongue skill and I wondered if his scar would heal and go away. It would be a bit sad if Harry died but you never know if Dd can be axed... I know people who won't read the books for that reason too. I don't know what people are so afraid of! I prefer not to give evil that much power in my mind (oh well)

busybusymum · 12/10/2006 09:47

misdee

It may be because cats were believed to have magical powers, and they guard/mind witches and the magical community!

They can sense strange things that people cant!

HTH

DumbledoresGirl · 12/10/2006 09:58

Wasn't V killing the Potters because he was after Harry and would have to kill his parents first? Or was he after them because they were Order of the Phoenix members?

Bucketsofbloodydinosaurs · 12/10/2006 10:13

But if Neville is The One, there's a whole other story going on where Harry is Neville's Obiwan/Gandalf as he's pretty much taught him everything he knows. (Cue another 7 books recounting events from Neville's POV and how sweet and poignant would they be?)
Maybe Harry will take Neville along in Book7 as his squire and they'll both come of age blah blah blah but Neville does the deed and becomes Minister for magic so Harry and Ginny can have their nauseating baby Albus. Harry will become an Auror, Hermione will be headmistress of Hogwarts (surely her destiny?) and Ginny and Ron will be stay-at-home parents as that's what their family are obviously good at.
What's Neville's familiar by the way? could that be an animagus?

FillyjonkthePumpkinEater · 12/10/2006 10:17

cat thing interesting misdee

was typing a reply but evil MIL came in and i had to pretend to do other things.

had pondered this also.

what do you reckon we can get this thread up to?

DumbledoresGirl · 12/10/2006 10:18

Bucket - Neville's familiar is his toad ("Trevor?")

Now I really must get on with normal adult life!

Bucket, I agree Hermione is destined to be Headmistress! Maybe Ron could be Filch type person? And yes, why are all the staff single? Or ARE they? I seriously think DD and Mcgonagall had something going, he always dances with her at the ball etc, and she is often in his study in the middle of the night! Is annoying that Rons mum seems to be stay at home type, after all, her kids are all away at school so she has no excuse!!

OP posts:
Rosyspookily · 12/10/2006 10:59

Yeah but Mrs weasly is looking after the chickens. She is my role model. (and my house is already just like the burrow )

FillyjonkthePumpkinEater · 12/10/2006 11:10

"Is annoying that Rons mum seems to be stay at home type, after all, her kids are all away at school so she has no excuse!! "

oh god would love to see that in active convos

"my 7 children are all at boarding school, should I get a job?"

Not saying she should get a job necessarily, although seeing as her children are all very poor it might be an idea... But she has no real role other than being a mother. All the female staff are single and a bit androgynous (don't really know how to spell it!), seems to be lacking strong female multi-tasking, juggling women tearing around fighting dark wizards, working at minisrty of magic, washing kids quidditch kit AND feeding chickens!

OP posts:
DumbledoresGirl · 12/10/2006 12:34

I agree about kicking Mre Weasley out of the home and getting her into a job. Most of the time she must have very little on her plate, with all her children either grown-up, or at school, and Mr Weasley working long hours. Also, the housework is done magically. What does she do all day I wonder? She must have so much time on her hands, for all we know, she might be Voldemort in her spare time! Now how about that for a theory?

Rosyspookily · 12/10/2006 12:35

Mrs weasley is always very busy when we see her, feeding everyone, looking after order of phoenix people, probably co-ordinating the meeting times, sorting out Grimauld place, counciling tonks, sending howlers and knitting all her children and their friends jumpers.. she's the hub, always available. If she has time I think she should become a backing singer for popular singing sorceress, celestina warbeck.
Its true none of the female characters seem to be trying to do it all at the same time, the female teachers all seem to be single. Of course Hermione will manage to be headmistress aswell as have lots of Rons babies!

Rosyspookily · 12/10/2006 12:49

Plus Mrs Weasley is probably on witchnet alot of the time too.....

Bucketsofbloodydinosaurs · 12/10/2006 13:41

Think you've hit the nail on the head there Rosylily, better email JKR that one.
Perfect spelling by the way, Imnot27.

Anyone fancy digressing to the banality of magic in fiction? Why can't the Weasleys magic up more money or new stuff? If Mrs Weasley can make a spoon stir itself, why can't she make darned handmedowns look like new? Why don't they use muggle technology FGS? And why did Samantha in Bewitched only use her powers for housework, even when Darren wasn't looking? At what point does a little magic become omnipotence? What would you use magic for if you were Mrs Weasley?
(We WILL keep this thread alive!)

Moomin · 12/10/2006 13:48

my GOD! it's taken me hours to read all this. I only have a couple of things to say becayse my brain is MASHED now.

I think Snape is deffo a goody
I think Harry or Ron or Hermione will die in book 7. On Blue Peter recently () JKR said that when her husband found out who was dying he said 'oh no not them!' and was v.disappointed. So this wouldn't have been his reaction if it was Snape, Percy, the twins, etc would it?

busybusymum · 12/10/2006 13:49

V decided it would be harry not neville,
Isnt there something about v marking the child who is going to kill him, therefore by giving harry the scar he choose him?

Or have I got to re-read them all again?

Bucketsofbloodydinosaurs · 12/10/2006 13:59

Yeah but 'marking' is a vague concept that any author could wriggle around. Could have marked him by torturing his parents and sending them mad. And if we go for the 'No fate but what we make' line of inquiry (a la Terminator II ) they can easily smash any prophecies or percieved destinies by choosing free will.

imnot27 · 12/10/2006 16:46

Yes, marking, hhmm, ANYWAY, I too often wonder why the Weasleys don't magic some more money. If you can charm objects to be portkeys, you can, as you say Buckets, magic their clothes eg Rons dress robes. Is all very artistic license, as with time turners, arguement further down thread (like, years ago), if you can go back in time, why not just kill Voldermort when he was a child? Is probably v true Mrs Weasley on Witchnet swapping recipes for Cauliflower cheese, headlice zapping charms etc, still wish she was more dynamic though. Any takers on Dd/Macgonagall lovers scenario?
