Having re-read The Half Blood Prince last week, I think he is on the right side, but no-one agrees with me! Anyone else sad enough to have an opinion on this?

OP posts:

doesn't take him to london in the book-takes him by rowing boat which he enchants so he doesn't have to row.
it is SO intriguing!!!!!!

FillyjonktheBananaEater · 01/10/2006 20:00

I am willing it to be July, DG

there is a theory that it will be published on 7/7/7. but that could be bllx.

was harry not, as a baby taken to the durselys on the motorbike?

or was that in the film and I have got confused?

jaysus, am i going to have to read all six books with my marker pens?

Blandmum · 01/10/2006 20:02

harry was taken on Sirus' bike to the dursleys by Hagred. He mentioned that he has dreams of being on a flying moter bike before he knows he is going to Hogwarts in book 1

DumbledoresGirl · 01/10/2006 20:03

Do you think there are (or will be in the future) people who will do the Harry Potter series for their dissertation? Lucky them if they do!

saltire · 01/10/2006 20:07

Well i'm sure it is mentioned somewhere that Hagrid took Harry to the Dursleys on his motorbike. I'm going to go off and check now. I just wondered where it was now, and if anyone had any ideas as to where it might be

Bucketsofbloodydinosaurs · 01/10/2006 20:08

DD trusted Snape because he had obviously made him an unbreakable vow. That's why it was easy for him to make an unbreakable vow to Mrs Malfoy protecting her son in the book 6 because it didn't conflict with this one.
Please can someone google (or read if you're that fast, I'm off to bed) more info on unbreakable vows, like when Ron said the twins nearly had him make one.

MerlinsBeard · 01/10/2006 20:08

OOTP is out at cinemas in July 2007, book not even finished so doubt that it will be edited/re jigged/re edited/proof read/typed AND published by July

Could be wrong though

saltire · 01/10/2006 20:09

Ok, have just realised that MB and fillyjonk agreed with me about Hagrid, Harry and the bike. This is getting to me, but i'm wondering now if it was in the book or the film!

DumbledoresGirl · 01/10/2006 20:10

If the film is out in July, that will satisfy me for the time being.....

MerlinsBeard · 01/10/2006 20:10

Both, i have just started re reading the series and am sure its in there

DumbledoresGirl · 01/10/2006 20:11

Hagrid does bring Harry to the Dursleys on the flying motorbike in both the book and the film. Sorry, what is the significance of this question?

MerlinsBeard · 01/10/2006 20:12

July 13th 2007 is the date on the snitch (its a friday so friday 13th is a good date for it really!)

FluffyCharlotteCorday · 01/10/2006 20:13

It was definitely in the book Saltire - he arrived on the motorbike when DD and Professor McGonegal were waiting for him (she'd been a cat all day). But he didn't go to London on it. I can't remember any more mention of the motorbike after Hagrid says in the first book, that he'd better get back to return Sirius' bike. Has there been any more mention, anyone?

Blandmum · 01/10/2006 20:14

The bit about him being on the flying bike comes up when Hagrid taks about being on the bike. This follws a discussion with mcgonagle et all in the hogshead about how srius killed peter petigrew and gave away harry's parents location to Voldy. Hagrid says that he borrowed the bike from Sirius, who asked to take hatty himself. Hagrid refuses and says that DD insisted that only He should deliver Harry.

saltire · 01/10/2006 20:20

D' dores girl, I asked because i wondered what had happened to it, and if anyone had any theories about where it was!

DumbledoresGirl · 01/10/2006 20:20

Ah so that answers another question of mine. I have The philosopher's Stone in front of me right now and in it Hagrid says, in response to Dumbledore asking him where he got the motorbike: "Young Sirius Black lent it me." I couldn't work that out as I assumed Black was already in Azkaban for the "murder" of Peter Pettigrew and Muggles. But presumably, he hadn't confronted Pettigrew at that point?

saltire · 01/10/2006 20:25

If i recall correctly, Sirius didn't get arrested until a couple of days later - when Pettigrew blew up some muggles and then turned into a rat and went down the drain. I think Sirius gave Hagrid the bike to deliver Harry, he wanted to do it himself but i don't think anyone was sure wether to trust him, they all thought he had been secret keeper for the Potters and had delivered their address to Voldemort.
i may be wrong of course

MerlinsBeard · 01/10/2006 20:26

What was the secret that was being kept? will we find out? or do we aready know?

DumbledoresGirl · 01/10/2006 20:28

Pettigrew's secret? Wasn't it just the whereabouts of Lily and James?

saltire · 01/10/2006 20:35

Yes, he was secret keeper for their (the Potter's) whereabouts. But at the last minute he swapped the secret keeper role with pettigrew, who betrayed them.
i'm confusing myself now, how the h*ll Rowling plotted all this on a train is beyond me, i'd need years!
Back to the unbreakable vows, and i have often wondered if dumbeldore made an unbreakable vow with Snape that he was to protect Harry.

ScareyCaligulaCorday · 01/10/2006 20:36

I never quite got that swapping the secret keeper role thing. Always thought it was a bit wooly.

FillyjonkthePumpkinEater · 01/10/2006 20:40

I think it must have been, tbh

Thats kind of the theme of the book, isn't it ? Unbreakable vows? Doing things that hurt others for their own good?

saltire · 01/10/2006 20:44

I actually decided last night - while having to sit through Star wars - episode 3, is a bit like Harry potter. Lots of talk of chosen 1, prophecy's, orphaned child brought up by mentor ( in this case Obi Wan).
My ironing pile isn't doing itself while i am on here!

ScareyCaligulaCorday · 01/10/2006 20:45

Oh they're all the same, these stories.

That's why they're so successful - they tune into so many cultural resonances.

DumbledoresGirl · 01/10/2006 20:47

If you are going for woolly plots, I was watching a bit of the latest film today and it suddenly occurred to me: Harry is entered into the Triwizard Tournament by Barty Crouch Jnr posing as Mad-eye Moody, and helped to win simply so he would be the first to lay his hands on the Triwizard Cup and be transported to the graveyard to aid Voldemort in his rebirth thingy. So for nearly a whole school year, Crouch had to pose as Moody, keep taking the polyjuice, and go to extraordinary lengths to get Harry, the underdog, through the tournament and the ultimate winner. Just before the final task, he changed the cup into a portkey to get Harry transported.

Well, what a lot of effort! Why didn't he just turn something else he knew Harry would touch first into a portkey and get him that way? Surely it need not have taken a whole year, and a very high profile way of doing things to achieve the end he was after. Anyone?
