...whilst filming for Top Gear. Saw it on BBC3 news , something about it here .

I know he has lots of admirers on here

I'm presuming these are the same cars as they race at Santa Pod? DH has been down there with some friends and I was terrified at the thought of what could go wrong and their safety as spectators nevermind driving the things.

speechless at MD.

Often insensitive of others' feelings, I find, but those comments are disgraceful.

Quadrophenia · 20/09/2006 23:06

mrs spoon, kind of the same as santa Pod but faster, you are up on a hill there so out of harms way with barriers etc.
Apparently he was doing 315 mph

lanismum · 20/09/2006 23:07

poor richard

handlemecarefully · 20/09/2006 23:15

I didn't see that second comment. I am married to a white middle class man who drives a fast car (4 litre!). Don't think dh deserves to die (although he ought to be more environmentally sensitive in his choice of motor), and my children would be unbearably devastated if he did....

Sometimes peoples 'political' beliefs seem to cloud their judgement don't they

Kittypickle · 20/09/2006 23:17

How sad I don't usually watch Top Gear but happened to watch the episode when they went caravanning in Dorset. It was absolutely hilarious, I haven't laughed so much for ages. Fingers crossed he pulls through.

ghosty · 20/09/2006 23:19

Moondog's comment is as bad IMO as the shitty jokes about Steve Irwin's funeral that other mumsnetters are making ....

You should all be ashamed of yourselves and I hope that no one you love dies or is in a terrible accident.

YG - I hope you are ok

dazzlincaz · 20/09/2006 23:19

Dh just said (watching news) 'Richard Hammond is stable after crash'. Hang on in there, RH.

PinkTulips · 20/09/2006 23:20

just read thorough this thread moondog. bad karma to wish someone dead. especially someone who's never done any harm to you or anyone else.

MrsSpoon · 20/09/2006 23:21

Blimey Quadrophenia, DH described the cars at Santa Pod (the few they saw before it was rained off) as unbelieveably fast and loud, he'll be shocked when he hears this was faster.

themoon66 · 20/09/2006 23:21

Poor Richard. Poor Mrs Hammond and DDs. It's going to be a long night for them.

MrsSpoon · 20/09/2006 23:22

He's stable, that sounds more positive.

hooleymama · 20/09/2006 23:22

Catsmother - Is it racist if you're white and someone calls you white...or is it just stating the bleeding obvious?

Quadrophenia · 20/09/2006 23:24

Alot faster Mrsspoon, the track simply isn't long enough to reach anywhere near those speeds

lanismum · 20/09/2006 23:27

iv seen superbikes, they are fast enough, i cant even imagine anything faster than those.

catsmother · 20/09/2006 23:32

Hooleymama ..... I think you're right .... if I described my mum as white I would be stating the obvious !

However, if I defended a remark about wishing someone dead because he represented the things I despised, and one of those things I cited was the colour of his skin, than surely that remark then becomes racist ?

hooleymama · 20/09/2006 23:43

Hi Catsmother
Yeah..good point.well made.

I've seen other threads where Moondog was a very good friend to mumsnetters in need...whatever issues she may have I don't think she sounds malevolent or spiteful...or racist....but I also hate the way that driving too fast is glamourised ...though I have to admit I love brainiac & that's stuff you really shouldn't try at home.

catsmother · 20/09/2006 23:43

As Dazzlincaz said, the latest news item on the BBC site quotes a hospital spokesman as saying he's "stable". Let's hope he stays that way.

catsmother · 20/09/2006 23:49

I hope you're right. I don't "know" Moondog though I recognise her name and don't associate it with anything untoward.

I hope she was trying to be flippant (as opposed to plain nasty), but hugely miscalculated the effect the things she said would have. Though I'm finding it hard to believe that an intelligent person would do that.

Would be kinda mature if she apologised. Not to me personally, or any other Mnetter who's objected ..... but just for the sake of being decent or whatever you want to call it, and because you never know if any of his family might read this.

hooleymama · 20/09/2006 23:49

Well I'm not an MD but isn't the first 24 hours the most critical time. His biog says he's the same age as me...so young!!!
Like themoon66 said..it's going to be a long night for the family Hammond.

catsmother · 20/09/2006 23:52

And I also think an apology would be in order for people like Yorkiegirl who have lost someone long before they ever thought they would (have just seen the other thread she started).

hooleymama · 20/09/2006 23:54

Hi catsmother..hmm she might be feeling shamefaced...or disgruntled at the cyber-kicking she's just received....on the scale of things I doubt she's a blip on the radar to the Hammond family (no offence moondog!)they've got more important things to worry about.

hooleymama · 20/09/2006 23:58

Ah yes yorkiegirl.....when the person I considered to be one of my closest friends didn't even bother to call me when my father died I just thought...fuck it my life is better without friends like that. It's between Moondog & Yorkiegirl to make their peace with each other...I don't think a forced apology is worth much myself.

catsmother · 21/09/2006 00:05

True.
