is he a performance poet and is he still alive?

ScummyMummy · 23/06/2006 14:30

yes and yes (I hope). he writes very silly and funny and sad poems. Here's one:

Pop and me

My dad had come along to watch me
the day I came last in the cub scout sack race;
the day my glasses fell off on to the running track
and somebody behind me
deliberately hopped on top of them
and damaged them really badly.
I was that
struggling runt at the back
laughed at by everyone,
everyone, except my dad.
And not because he had
a beating in mind
but because he felt for me.
And when he came to find me
and I was melting with tears
he said 'You're the one
they'll remember in the years to come, son,
you were very funny.'
And he took me to the shop
and ordered me some pop
and we halved the humiliation
when he didn't have the money.

and here's another:

he Price of Art in Luton
On the bridge approaching the railway,
the man was begging.
I said draw me a dog
and I'll give you a quid.
So I gave him some paper
and he did.
And I said, there you go, mate,
you can make money out of art!
Will you sign it?
As I handed him the one pound thirty-odd
I had in my pocket,
he informed me that the signed ones were a fiver.

DS used to go to nursery with the child of a very famous footballer - little terror he was too.

BettySpaghetti · 23/06/2006 14:50

I'd like to reassure you all that John Hegley is still alive ( or at least he was a few weeks ago) as he officially opened our newly refurbished library.

ScummyMummy · 23/06/2006 15:07

Betty. Did you get to talk to him?

tamum · 23/06/2006 15:29

I love his one about the tensions between his working class roots and his current life:

I remember Luton
As I'm eating my crouton

Or something like that. He is fab, isn't he?

tamum · 23/06/2006 15:31

Sorry, just remembered, it's "swallowing my crouton". Scans better, eh.

I once took a group of the roughest kids from Leeds on a trip to France and had to share a coach with a prep school where some link of the Al Fayed family children went.

Shudder at the stressful time I had trying to stop our louts from laying into the very polite lovely children! ( don't work there any more by the way. That trip finished me off!)

Wallace · 23/06/2006 15:38

My sister was at school with Robert Mugabe's kids until recently

BettySpaghetti · 23/06/2006 16:10

Scummy -I didn't meet him unfortunately as we were away that weekend but apparently he was very good and very entertaining (as you would expect )

My friend was taught by

Mother Teresa.

Won't write what she says about the experience , or this particular nun.

A ready steady cook chef is a parent at DS school and he does give good prizes do cooking demo's etc. DS has been quoting his words of wisdom about food hygeine at me for the last week.

TinyGang · 23/06/2006 18:31

John Hegley Fantastic!

alibubbles · 23/06/2006 21:28

As Arsenals training ground is on the outskirts of St Albans, we have a lot of footballers living locally.

DD and DS pick a friend;s daughter up from a special school in London and waits at the gate with Jonathan Ross and Carol Vorderman

MrsJohnCusack · 23/06/2006 21:32

Mary Quant, Helen Lederer, and Sophie Aldred (Ace from Doctor Who - yes I know, WHO?) went to my school
and a prime minister's daughter, can't remember who right at the moment

and even more off subject, but vaguely entertaining, my class teacher for 2 years and English teacher is Reg Holdsworth (in real life) from Corrie's wife

AllieBongo · 23/06/2006 21:38
