where i live there is uproaor about a local pub daring to display the england flag across the front/top of its building...told to take them out of charity shop windows etc..now on t.v this morning..some scottish people are filmed asying they HATE English and will be supporting trinidad and tobago in world cup...????

we cant so much as think anything like that..and now this close to home?, were both part of britain FGS

if that was and english guy/gal saying that ther'would be a whole heap of trouble?

again where i am from..crime in the surrounding towns is high and statistics show that a high % is caused by people our country have given asylum too, who we allow to live in our country who receive help from US and if anyone dare say they think it is unfair, we are racist?

i just cant get my head round it?
the world is going mad.

expecting some 'good' replys on this, but im sorry i just think some people take the P out of us because they know it'll be us in botherSad

Answering to the question that names this thread I would say you are not the only one. When a flag have been used at some points by racist organisation the same problem happens. Search Ku Klux Clan and flag and you would see the same happened over there. Now, from my country I can say that I hate when right wing politicians use religious symbols in flags as political propaganda, it seems like many short minded and ignorant people just asume that because the symbol is there then that party is the one to vote for Shock

Chandra · 08/06/2006 21:28

Now that I remember properly, that flag was not in regular use anymore at the tiem it was "borrowed" by the KKK. So definitively, not the same...

VeniVidiVickiQV · 08/06/2006 21:33

Id like to contribute, but i think its all been said.

Chandra you've just made me think of the Nazi misappropriation of the swastika

Chandra · 08/06/2006 22:15

Yeah, that was a sad one, the swastika meaning was very much similar to "May the force be with you" and now it is something very scary. Now, is not that I'm particularly interested in this sort of symbology, I came across the swastika meaning in Nepal, there was an important festivity date in the country when I visited, and they were everywhere! that's were the Nazis borrowed it from. Couldn't stop myself from shuddering even when knowing it had such a different meaning.Sad

EvesMama · 08/06/2006 22:59

the pub is actually called 'the george & dragon!

St George was from Turkey EvesMama [although the BNP website is anxious to state that he wasn't for some reason]

I think you lot have so much to be proud of. Sure, you may have colonised, but then you name a world power that has ever done anything but? But I tell you what, if you're going to be colonised by someone, make sure it's the English. Your policies were sooooo much more enlightened than comparable powers of the time: the Dutch, the Spanish etc were much, much more brutal.

Your political institutions have formed the basis of pretty much the only stable modern states in the world. The US came up with a brilliant variation on it, but a lot of the political values and habits it built on are almost exclusively English. You have managed to scale down your monarchy and your empire gracefully. And you DID win the war, and you DID fight it out by yourselves for a long time (cf useless French, reluctant Americans). Loads to be proud of.

I think the English political legacy to the world is one of the great gifts of civilisation.

Wish you'd get over 1966 though! :o

fairyjay · 09/06/2006 09:30

aahhh - bless you Bloss. Not everybody hates us then!

We will get over '66 - hopefully on World Cup final day this year!!!! Grin

nailpolish · 09/06/2006 09:48

what do you think of this

local television shop has an offer on - buy a telly during the world cup and if England win you get your money back

television shop owner's idea of humour, local Englishman is taking him to court for racist behaviour, saying he feels 'hurt and angry'

i think the world's gone mad, interested to know what others think

zippitippitoes · 09/06/2006 09:51

nailpolish I'd be seriously tempted, why would anyone not be and why would anyone complain?

nailpolish · 09/06/2006 09:53

i think the shop owner is trying to say "oh if England win your telly viewing will be ruined and i will give you your money back"

its just a laugh

might even encourage people to cheer for England!

"come on England i want my money back!"

or something

local dourface is just being a twat imo

SenoraPostrophe · 09/06/2006 09:54

np - that's obviously just one man trying to win some cash surely? It will get thrown out of court (if it doesn't, that's whe I'll start worrying)

zippitippitoes · 09/06/2006 09:55

well you could say that he is saying he will win as england won't but on the other hand you could say he is saying if england wins I'm celebrating with you..

NotQuiteCockney · 09/06/2006 09:57

You can sue people because they make you feel "hurt and angry"? Goodness, I must get a lawyer.

fairyjay · 09/06/2006 10:20

Quite a good marketing ploy - just hope he's taken out insurance incase England do win!

mosschops30 · 09/06/2006 10:34

Attacking a 7 year old for wearing an England shirt is pretty low, isn't it?
