I am so glad I had my kids before I went into teaching. I now have 'issues' with all sorts of perfectly OK names, due to memories of litle charmers who had that name!

For example I have always liked the name Zoe. Last year I taught 3 of them, and they were all 'challenging' in different ways. Scarred me for life it has! Grin

ghosty · 25/04/2006 07:25

Yeah, martianbishop ... teaching does tend to 'spoil' names for you doesn't it? I used to want to call a girl Katharine but I have taught so many it kind of lost its shine ... I have taught a billion Jennifers and Imogens too - both nice names but I couldn't call any daughters them because I can only see the Jennifers and Imogens that I taught.

DS has a very traditional English name that we shortened to an old fashioned but unusual version - also named after my favourite uncle who has the same shortened version ...
We have had a few raised eyebrows and his first teacher did ask me if that was 'really' his name Shock ... So I could be guilty of doing the 'strange' name thing myself ...
But, like suzy says, at least he has his original name to fall back on ...

Suzy knows DS's name ... is it odd?

What I mean is - Suzy, do you think DS's name is odd?

Not is it odd that suzy knows my DS's name Grin

Yep things have gone the other way. We have given our kids totally ordinary names which are actually very unusual. Never known another baby with ds2's name.

Also thought the same about a 2 year old called John - how unusual! And never met another baby with my name for some reason which is quite ordinary and old fashioned but maybe not old fashioned in the popular Gracie/Phoebe/Chloe kind of way.

suzywong · 25/04/2006 08:25

No Ghosty, I 'm sure in NZ Moahb is pretty run of the mill Wink

Ghosty's ds's name, or the dimnuitive he is known by is fab, a great 1920s name.

threebob · 25/04/2006 08:49

I love Ghosty's ds's name - it's not odd - but I have worked with too many in my field to use it myself!

tjacksonpfc · 25/04/2006 09:04

people say that my 2 kids have strange names though my dds name is Rhiannon Louise rhiannon coz her dad is welsh and louise after me. the amount of people that cant spell rhiannon or pronunce it. and orr ds is Alun spelt the welsh way Reese also spelt the welsh way Dennis after my dps uncle hes just met and an uncle of mine who died and Mor after dps dad who died 3 weeks before Alun was born. so we have Rhiannon Louise and Alun Reese Dennis Morgan

Dottydot · 25/04/2006 09:26

I Love the name Spike - fantastic! But then I'm a Buffy-holic and we named our ds1 Alexander purely on the wild hope that we could eventually shorten it to Xander..!

I once knew someone who named their son Storm, which I think is pretty cool...

fennel · 25/04/2006 09:42

I have a friend called Spike. it's really his nickname, he is tired of it these days in his 30's and prefers to be called John. how boring.

CHICagoMUM · 25/04/2006 09:59

I know a Storm too (although not a child - he is in his 50's).

ghosty · 25/04/2006 11:16

Phew, thanks suzy and threebob! Smile

I have a friend (female) whose name is Woody - her parents were total hippies apparently. I like it but it took some getting used to. I thought it was a nickname for ages.

Pagan Priest - a girl

spidermama · 25/04/2006 16:22

I get annoyed about this because it's my kids people are talking about.

DH and I gathered names almost as a full time job tnhroughout the pregnancies, pouring over name books, watching credits roll on films, combing the family trees. We found it very hard to agree on names and in the end we chose names we both love. Doesn't everyone?

That's why I feel sad when people feel free to slag off unusual names and level all sorts of generalised critisms at the parents (Chavs, trying to hard, whatever) without ever having met them.

I have a very common name and I hate having a common name because I don't feel common. I feel like me.

Perhaps my kids will resent the name I've given them, but I don't think they're any more likely to resent their names than all the Chloes and Jacks out there for different reasons.

I hope people can stop passing their judgements down and infecting further generations.

It's very personal and it hurts when people make snide comments about my kids names. It's another part of the fit-in-or-fuck-off culture which I loath.

Phew! That feels better.

Spidermama, my guesses weren't actually correct, were they?Wink

I know 2 kids called Marlon and Brandon.I don't think it matters what npeople call their kids really.IMO kids usually have a phase of not liking their names.I have an unusual name and used to want to be called Jane Smith.
People in the media and arts etc seem to be able to get away with giving their kids unusual names without being given a massively hard time whereas "civillians"(to quote Liz Hurley).get a harder time.

dinny · 25/04/2006 20:30

I really like Spike - be good as a nickname that stuck, iyswim. Also love Woody. My ds can always turn to that if he decides he hates his shortened-name/nickname we call him.

Can't believe Levi is being called chavvy - beautiful Hebrew name.

My dh insisted on ds being Rollo, lol.

ps. Lockets - who would laugh at Nell? it's gorgeous.

essbee · 25/04/2006 20:33

No!!!!

I met a 50 yr old man the other day called Spike!!

He was completely drunk having walked out of the local and just introduced himself! Grin

Moomin · 25/04/2006 20:39

boy round the corner is called Ziggy (that's his 'christened' name, not short for anything or nickname)

MrsWood · 25/04/2006 22:20

Cool name Spike :) Maybe she was a Buffy fan. We wanted to name dd DARLA (after Angel character) but decided to go for Amy instead. Maybe next one...
