I know twins and the boy of the pair is called Spike. I thought it was really cool and the kids are delicious and can totally get away with it. Not really sure about Elmo tho, but I do love other boys names that end in o - Inigo, Rocco etc. You have to have a certain attitude for them, I guess.

alittlebitshy · 24/04/2006 10:40

do they even think about when that child is all grown up? lol, imagine it " the bank manager denim x will see you now" pmsl

Thomcat · 24/04/2006 10:41

I know 2 Spikes. Oh and a dog called Spike too.
I don't dislike it as such, each to their own, but it's too much like a nickname and I hope the poor guys don't feel held back by it when they enter the world of corporate finance / politics / etc!

fastasleep · 24/04/2006 10:43

My next door neighbour back at my parents was called Denzil (skinny blonde chap he was) and his brother was called Spike... never struck me as unusual at all!

fastasleep · 24/04/2006 10:44

Denim's awful. We know a coco... and there are obviously lots of scallies with keanu and satsuma and jellybean and the like round here lol

Northerner · 24/04/2006 10:44

A cfriend of mine has a baby boy called Spike. I like it.

picassotriggerfish · 24/04/2006 10:45

i wouldn't use it tho, he'd have to be super-cool to carry it off i think...

fastasleep · 24/04/2006 10:45

I like Spike too actually lol..

Gloworm · 24/04/2006 10:46

picassotriggerfish · 24/04/2006 10:46

ohhh, i like coco too. i'd quite like to be called coco!

obv. have bizarre taste in names...!

threebob · 24/04/2006 10:47

I always think "could I sing hello xxxx" with a straight face, and I think I could for Spike (though the temptation to sing hedgehog songs would be quite strong). But Hello Elmo - no sorry - I would have to lie and say the class was full.

suzywong · 24/04/2006 10:53

There is a Cheyanne at ds1's school, but it only looks odd written down.

Personally, with regards to Spike, I think it is pretentious to use nicknames as a formal given name. I mean, real Spikes have to earn that name, like baby Rocky the fighter IYSWIM.

I like Oscar - it's a proper name and it has a very interesting history

schneebly · 24/04/2006 11:00

I love names like spike and rocky but am not cool enough to carry it off and it would cause a bit of a stir in the local farming community where everyone is either james or john!

picassotriggerfish · 24/04/2006 11:03

ktp...what's oscar's hist??

merryberry · 24/04/2006 11:04

Iggy lives in my manor. Named for Iggy Pop.

drosophila · 24/04/2006 11:05

I know someone who called their boy -Thomas

Can you believe that!!!Grin

Seriously having a strange name myself (my mother had already had 4 kids by the time I came along so short of ideas would you believe I was named after the local Mental Hosp as it was called in those days) I gave my DS quite a stange (old Irish) name but then DD a more common place name. I got sick of having to spell my name and my son's name. They do say though that you are more likely to get job interviews if you have a stange name.

cyan · 24/04/2006 11:16

To this day I still have hassle with peple spelling and pronouncing my name. I've got used to it, people seem to have an issue with the fact it isn't spelt phonetically. I have been called Sean, Sharm, Sharna, Cyan, all sorts, which is why it is such a joy when someone spells it and pronounces it correctly! I share my name with the welsh weathergirl!

picassotriggerfish · 24/04/2006 11:19

in genesis lockets (i'm roosmum btw!)

cyan · 24/04/2006 11:20

I'm sorry, it's not a name that I personally like but each to their own Smile
