Any other Forces wives out there?

Hi I was just wondering if there are any other forces wives using MN.

OP posts:
sharklet · 22/03/2006 21:34

Our next tour could be Germany (Ramstein) or possibly Iceland or Japan. I hoping for the latter 2 although those three and Italy (Aviano) are our top four choices.

DH isn't your usual forces guy nor your usual American. He likes to put a cat amongst the pidgeons at work, freaks them out by wearing pink shirts and all sorts.

None of the US wives can get thier heads around me - they've all pidgeon-holed me for a strange English eccentric - well those that know me - I keep a low profile as we live off base. I show my face to help out with facepainting for fundraisers and thats about it.

sharklet · 22/03/2006 21:35

Laura - where in Plymouth were you? I'm a plymouth girl myself grew up there.

Laura032004 · 22/03/2006 22:28

Sharklet - we lived in Crownhill, just opposite where Pizza Hut / McDonalds is now. Our road used to be the entrance to the swimming pool in Seaton Barracks if that means anything to you.

sharklet · 22/03/2006 22:36

I know it yes. We used to go swimming at Seaton Barracks's pool. My folks live in Wembury - just outside Plymouth - you might have visited the beach there.

sharklet · 22/03/2006 22:37

BTW cornwall's fab you lucky thing. Are you down at Culdrose?

weewilliewinkie · 23/03/2006 08:38

Hi scotchlass, we're in Herford. It's very small! I do have lots of pals though so it's not that bad. Just a bit sick of the German way of life, iyswim. We have just bought a house in Glasgow though, for the futureSmile - when ds is starting school, I'll move in to it (still 2 1/2 years away!). we decided we want him to go to the same school and not shift him around every 2/3 years. I'll live in Glasgow while dh commutes weekly.

However, I heard a rumpur we might be getting Cyprus next....GrinGrin Anyone got any experience of it?

weewilliewinkie · 23/03/2006 08:39

a Rumpur? RUMOUR. duh.

scotchlass · 23/03/2006 14:18

I've never been to Cyprus but do know a few people who have had postings there. They all said that it was great as it's like an extended hol! Aparently though you can get tired of this and 2 years is long enough!!! Not sure about the last bit but I am sure it's lovely. Moving school's is a pain but the kids become very resilient. Ds1 is in yr 5 and has had 2 nurseries and 3 schools.

are any of you lovely army wives posted in Paderborn by any chance? I am in need of some help if you are please Smile

weewilliewinkie · 23/03/2006 15:12

I'm fairly near Paderborn, Yorkiegirl - well about an hour away. What do you ned help with?

Yorkiegirl · 23/03/2006 16:08

DH was born in Germany as his father was a RSM with 10th royal hussars. I need a photograph of the house he lived in... are you ever over there or do you know someone who could take the picture for me and email me?

BellaLasagne · 23/03/2006 16:12

Just a word of warning girls.....

We bought our own house 3 years ago with the intention of dh leaving at some point. We absolutely love having our own place, and the life that goes with it, and ever since we've been here, have thought that we could never live in another quarter (we've done 12). Our children are settled in school, and we've lined up a great state secondary school (yes, they do exist!) for them.

We always thought that at the end of this posting, dh would weekly commmute. He had his posting, looked into all the options and decided he just didin't want to do it, so resigned!

All I'm saying is, if you think weekly commuting might be an option, it might not be, and it may be that, like us, you decide that's it and it's time to quit.

Good luck to you all Smile BL

weewilliewinkie · 23/03/2006 16:35

Yorkiegirl, I'm never there myself...you should try contacting your dh's father regiment if they are still there and tell them what you need - maybe someone there could help you. I don't know Paderborn at all, sorry! Or you could contact th Paderborn Hive, maybe (try googling it) and see if they could point you in the right direction.

Yorkiegirl · 23/03/2006 17:52

thanks www I will try that. DH's dad's regiment no longer exists I believe.

Laura032004 · 23/03/2006 18:20

sharklet - yes, DH is at Culdrose. Not so nice today though, pouring with rain! We quite often used to go to that beach. Small world!

weewilliewinkie - I lived with my parents for five years at Akrotiri, my DH lived at Episkopi (we met at school there :)) and my parents are currently living at Ayios Nikolaos which is the East side of the island, near Dhekalia, so ask away if you've got any questions. There were a couple of MN users out there as well. I was on holiday there last week........... it was sunny then :(

DH might be out in 5 years or may transfer will have to wait and see but civvy street seems so appealing at mo

Medulla · 07/07/2006 18:12

hi everyone I'm a forces wife too! Hope all you ladies on your own due to deployment, courses or whatever are ok! It's bloody hard isn't it. Looking forward to chatting, we're in Cyprus by the way!

vnmum · 07/07/2006 18:55

lucky you medulla, like i said i was out there not long ago. i did get bored of the heat after awhile but i didnt have ds then and theres only so much you can do on your own. which part of cyprus are you at?

QueenMab · 07/07/2006 19:10

Army wife here too! Unfortunately I'm in Bath, nowhere nice and hot like Cyprus...

Medulla · 07/07/2006 19:11

Akrotiri - really enjoying it so far

vnmum · 07/07/2006 19:18

I was in Dhekelia, and it seemed that there was alot more happening at your end of the island. How hot is it there at the moment?

Medulla · 07/07/2006 19:21

It gets to about 35 at the hottest point of the day but there is usually soemthing of a gentle sea breeze. Humidity has risen dramatically over last couple of weeks.

vnmum · 07/07/2006 19:23

oh i remember it well, although its been hot here in germany. the best thing we bought while in cyprus was a portable air con unit, i couldnt have managed while pregnant during summer if i hadnt had one. Have you hit the shops in Nicosia yet?

Medulla · 07/07/2006 19:25

Yes we had a Ladies Club trip there just a few weeks ago - I spent a small fortune and had a great day! We were really lucky with air conditioning as the family before us put it in the lounge and the main bedroom - fantastic!

vnmum · 07/07/2006 19:34

youre very lucky then. we only had the unit in the bedroom so we could sleep, and i was always up there during day in summer as it was too hot outside. i live in a flat now and i really miss the social life of cyprus, the bbqs and just sitting out in the garden talking. it just doesnt seem the same here. If you ever go to Dhekelia for any reason you must visit Lambros fish and chip restaurant on the cessac beach at the garrison. its the best f&c ive tasted
