I have just conducted a shopping experiment, Waitrose vs Asda.....

Went to Asda to do a big shop as needed plenty of cleaning products, cereal etc.

I decided to do a whole shop there, the choice was VERY limited for organic partic meat and fruit, but what there is looks fine. TBH I buy a lot of my meat at the local butcher anyway.

SO - my usual weekly waitrose bill is about £140 (if I buy most of the meat there)

I did thsi Asda shop and it was £98.

Then I keyed every product into Ocado as I unloaded them to see what saving I had made. I used like for like and made adjustments wherever necessary (eg I got organic Lamb Chops 500g, waitrose only did 400g or something so I made up the difference proportionally by adding something else)

The waitrose shop came to £136

Quite a good saving really if you extrapolate it out over a year! Alos have discovered they will deliver for £4 delivery charge

I compared Asda to Tesco last week and save about £15, my weekly shop is only for myself and DD so it was a great saving.

Asda rocks, even if it is full of chavs

CountessDracula · 05/03/2006 15:00

is actually £1976 a year

I have to say that I love Asda as I am on a tight budget too but then again it is only me and ds so my bill is never that much.

welshboris · 05/03/2006 15:03

Im a big asda fan, DD loves the good stuff milkshakes and she takes a fruit bag to MILs to stop her feeding her rubbish

WideWebWitch · 05/03/2006 15:05

I shop at Asda quite a bit (nearer than other supermarkets) and only buy organic bread, meat, cheese, fruit, veg. I won't buy it if it's not organic in some cases and Asda organic is fine. Other things, eg loo roll, nappies I just buy the cheapest. The things I can't get at Asda and end up going to Sainsbury's/elsewhere for are white burgundy, Sainsbury's is nice and Asda don't do it, hummus, PE pizzas and the odd fruit/veg thing if I need something specific. I definitely notice the difference Sainsbury's vs Asda - an week's Asda shop is a lot less than Sainsbury's.

nannyme · 05/03/2006 15:05

Asda for chavs? In the South Lake District everybody shops at Asda because that is all there is unless you want to hang out at Morrissons and there you find the real chavs!

There is Booths and M&S too but not for 'proper' shopping as they don't have things like all the sizes of nappies one might need.

MerlinsBeard · 05/03/2006 15:06

i shop online most of the time and quite often do comparitive shops with tesco, asda and sainsburies

depends what i want to which comes up cheapest actually`

Aero · 05/03/2006 15:07

...and people like me Grin who shop there weekly, cook from scratch (no twizzlers etc) and am definitely not chav!!! (despite living in the original birthplace of the word chav, which I hate - the word I mean, not where I live)

welshboris · 05/03/2006 15:08

Its not all chavs, obvioulsy, but you do get more than you would in say sainsburys

CountessDracula · 05/03/2006 15:09

no quite

I am not a chav for eg and I have been there twice now

doesn't asda have a good reputation for wine?

I tried ocado shopping one week because they were giving wine and chocolates and 155.00 discount with free delivery, but didn't rate the food especially

expatinscotland · 05/03/2006 15:10

who gives a toss who shops in there if it saves a buck? i couldn't care less.

nannyme · 05/03/2006 15:12

Also, if you are very poor eating crap can actually be a cheaper option. It doesn't have to be if you shop and cook thoughtfully but supermarkets make it so for time poor parents with other stresses weighing them down to the point where they cannot even begin to think about planning the family diet.

Such a shame that Organic is not as affordable as crispy coated nuggets or whatever and that Panda pop is cheaper than fruit juice or all the other lovely healthy produce I am fortunate enough to be able to afford to buy.

CountessDracula · 05/03/2006 15:14

it was v annoying took me hours to find the organic oj and apple juice amongst all the others.

I think it depends on where the store is tbh. People tend to shop where it's most convenient and if Sainsbury's is all there is in a town centre, the local people will shop there. Likewise if it were Asda etc.

I shop at all the main stores from time to ime, but mainly Asda as it's the best value for our family needs. Since starting to meal plan a couple of months ago, I've saved even more - up to £30 a week!

CountessDracula · 05/03/2006 15:19

We have waitrose about 5 mins walk away
A big sainsburys about 5 min drive
Asda about 10 min drive

My plan is to shop in Asda on weekly basis but get nice bits from Waitrose/butcher/deli eg cheese, meat etc

SoupDragon · 05/03/2006 15:22

Um.. and you were surprised about this??

Enid · 05/03/2006 15:26

hmm yes sorry cd but a total no brainer

remember Waitrose pay their suppliers properly!!

nannyme · 05/03/2006 15:27

I do a similar thing to you countessD I shop either online or in person at tesco or sainsbury's depending on what I want but both are cheapy options for the bulk of the shopping like my mr muscle kitchen cleaner(!), toilet roll, kitchen towel, etc. all of which are silly prices in m&s and waitrose. I then top up at m$s and waitrose for fresh stuff and treat stuff like belgian chocolate milk!

I use the butcher and local baker for specific meals or when bread is a feature of the meal - so for nice rolls at lunch or a roast dinner or something.

When we are very tiem short we bung the whole lot on an online tesco orer.

brimfull · 05/03/2006 15:27

I've never been impressed with the fruit and veg at our local asda.

nannyme · 05/03/2006 15:28

i am typing like cod in disguise, sorry

PiccadillyCircus · 05/03/2006 15:29

We shop in Morrisons - and we are not chavs Grin
