Went to Asda to do a big shop as needed plenty of cleaning products, cereal etc.

I decided to do a whole shop there, the choice was VERY limited for organic partic meat and fruit, but what there is looks fine. TBH I buy a lot of my meat at the local butcher anyway.

SO - my usual weekly waitrose bill is about £140 (if I buy most of the meat there)

I did thsi Asda shop and it was £98.

Then I keyed every product into Ocado as I unloaded them to see what saving I had made. I used like for like and made adjustments wherever necessary (eg I got organic Lamb Chops 500g, waitrose only did 400g or something so I made up the difference proportionally by adding something else)

The waitrose shop came to £136

Quite a good saving really if you extrapolate it out over a year! Alos have discovered they will deliver for £4 delivery charge

Have to admit i prefer Asdas. Its cheap, easy to get to, and i find the workers friendly (unlike the local Waitrose)/
We cook frest food every day, dont buy the frozen food that often, and love their fruit and veg.
Yea, its cheap, but thats what we can afford.

I went to the the large Asda in a nearby town (looks very much like the one in MK) and brought new cusions, throws and bits for my new house.

spacecadet · 05/03/2006 16:37

misdee, dont worry i know you didnt make it up! was just expressing shock at the meaning.
iota, am v Envy of you, we have a tesco extra but its 11 miles away, in fact the nearest supermarket of any description is 8 miles away.

iota · 05/03/2006 16:39

spacecadet Grin

ASDA is about 1.5 miles, Tesco is about 2.5 miles.
Waitrose is about 5 miles

iota · 05/03/2006 16:40

and new ASDA is next to new IKEA Grin

spacecadet · 05/03/2006 16:42

i forget how much in the sticks i am until i hear how close amenities are for other people, we dont have cable or mains gasShock

jessicaandrebeccasmummy · 05/03/2006 16:43

I think the thing you pick up really is that you shop within you means.

We use Sainsburys online for am onthly shop on payday. Top ups (bread/milk) are usually Asda/Tesco or even the naffi (army base) at a push.

We always used Tescos online until we tried sainsburys one week, and the quality was so much better.

Our Asda's dont do online delivery yet, so until it does, i will stick to sainsburys and then give them a go, and see what i think.

spacecadet · 05/03/2006 16:43

nearest ikea to me is where you live iota!!!!!!!!!!!!

iota · 05/03/2006 16:46

spacewy that is shocking Grin - ours used to be B'ham or Brent cross

spacecadet · 05/03/2006 16:47

until the MK, one opened, my nearest one was 2.5 hours away in b'ham.

flutterbee · 05/03/2006 16:49

God I wish Ikea sis online orders I'm missing being able to pop and see if I can spot a bargain.

UCM · 05/03/2006 16:51

I thought chav was from Chavvies, meaning kids from the romany Chavvee meaning kids. Lots of people called their kids chavvies in London and I understood that the press just took up on it, as in Rhyming Slang. Your explanation did make me larf Misdee and is so much more real. Smile

AngelaD · 05/03/2006 16:52

Tesco's are the same price as Asda, they monitor the prices constantly to make sure and your don't children learn any new words whilst shopping Grin

AggiePanther · 05/03/2006 17:09

But does it really matter who shops there? If it sells what you want and its cheaper ..then who cares if its chavvy??

Mercy · 05/03/2006 17:29

Aero and UCM, that's v interesting what you say re the origin of chav.

I grew up in North Kent hearing (and indeed) usng that word and I always knew it was derived from the Romany language - but I always thought it meant man or boy. Do you know the word 'mort' by any chance? I have to say it was never used in a perjorative way as far as I am aware.

Freckle · 05/03/2006 17:56

Well, I've recently found a better way to save money. I buy non-perishables in bulk from Costco (some perishables too, but freezable) and then top up each week on the perishables from either Sainsburys or Waitrose.

My last trip to Costco cost me £254. The equivalent shop at Sainsburys would have cost me over £340. Mind you, I have ample storage space in the cellar so it's not a problem to buy in bulk.

Milge · 05/03/2006 18:02

I do a fortnightly online order for loo roll, washing powder, tins, nappies etc, from tesco, about £80-90 each time, then do a weekly fresh food shop in waitrose. Also get meat and fish from waitrose if i haven't been able to get to the farmers market or want something that isn't seasonal. 4 of us eating well, plus cleaning, toiletries etc costs approx £400 pcm

PeachyClair · 05/03/2006 18:46

I love Asda, I think people think we're chavs (mainly because DS1 insists on wearing blinkin' tracksuits) but we're not actually.

I often buy my fruit and veg at Lidl as they do a lot of half price offers.

The only thing I do find is that when we shop in Asda instead of our local (small) Tesco, we spend more but only because of the bber wine section and fishmongers. We find restricting ourselves to less choice is a bonus!

Blandmum · 05/03/2006 18:51

As far as I'm concerned a bag of four is a bag of flour, a tin of beans a tin of bean, regardless of where you get them. But I don't like my local Asdas friut and veg (vever seems to last) and their meat is always tough. Oddly their fresh fish is excellent

welshboris · 05/03/2006 18:55

And their chinese meals are lush, better than my local takeaway.

mykidsmum · 05/03/2006 18:55

I would rather shop alongside the chavs in Asda than the Furry Hat Brigade in Waitrose anyday Grin

CountessDracula · 05/03/2006 20:00

Sophable I don't have too much time on my hands! I just wanted to see whether it really was a significant enough saving to bother dragging round Asda searching for the odd nice thing - I think it is but Enid yes you are right, Waitrose are much fairer to their suppliers and also are more concerned with animal welfare etc.

I am attempting to save some money atm though so I think I may try and get used to Asda

I must say I adore shopping in Waitrose and loathe it in asda though

OP posts:
milge · 05/03/2006 20:03

why not do as I do, CD, then you can have Waitrose every week, and the shopping hell of Asda once a fortnight??
